DX11 performance vs. Crysis 1 performance

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 9:37 am

Which one runs better? Crysis 2 in DX11 with Ultra'd out settings and high-resolution textures, or Crysis 1 with all settings on very high? Assuming both games are run at the same screen resolution?

I would hand this one over to Crysis 2, the amount of improvement in graphics is about proportional to the amount of performance drop, which wasn't extremely massive in my opinion.

Crysis 2 still runs better than Crysis 1, and although it looks better, it probably isn't DEFINITELY prettier than Crysis 1, but more colorful for sure.

Well I never bothered to test the FPS before and after, but I'd say I lost about 30%-50% in some areas.

I like what has been done. I think NOW the games graphics is more in line with Crysis 1 and runs even better.

HOWEVER, I still can't stand the postMSAA solution. Yes, I understand that with deferred rendering, MSAA can't be done (Or from what I hear, it can be done but the performance hit it unbelievably horrible).

The ghosting caused by postMSAA is annoying and I rather have jaggies than that. The issue I have with this STILL is that when I use r_postmsaa 0, sure the ghosting goes away and jaggies are back, but things like RAIN completely disappears as well.

No postmsaa in motion:

That ghosting/double-vision, especially in motion when trying to shoot someone, makes it very hard competitively AND aesthetically.

Crysis 2 runs WAY better.
If you're high. I get a sustained 60+ FPS in Crysis/ Warhead in Crysis 2 with DX11 I get an average of 45 FPS sometimes dips to 30. Plus Crysis/Warhead both have high res and realistic texture mods, which are a lot higher resolution than the ones in Crysis 2, even with DX11.

Better frame rate has nothing to do with the game running better.

Only reason the systems are slowing down is because to much texture rendering, the game is now more beautiful than ever, kick Crysis 1 and nomad in the balls, play the whole game and you will find out those jaw dropping moments just plainly rip off your face.

For example, In metro 2033 i get around 50fps average. And in stalker i can hit 60+ FPS but stalker runs like crap. Consistant freezes, LAG, etc.

He is probably saying FPS doesn't guarantee a better running game engine. If game engine 1 is running at 60 FPS but only has 1,000 polys on screen, that is crap compared to game engine 2 that is running at 30FPS but has 2,000,000 polys on screen.

With tessellation, would be interesting to see the average polys on screen compared between the two games. The motion blur, HDR (the flare style is over done though) and DOF is better quality in Crysis 2 by far.

The Crysis 2 DX11 performance is excellent on my machine; the game is now graphically superior to Crysis/Warhead, and the performance is a lot better. All maxed on Warhead and I get an average of 30fps, all maxed on Crysis 2 and I get 50fps+ in all situations. Prior to DX11 I had an average of ~85fps, so it would seem you have a 40% or so performance drop. This is including the high resolution textures of course, and on my rig that's a bit of a bottleneck as I only have 4 gigs of RAM; it's fast and overclocked, but 4 gigs is 4 gigs. Furthermore the ffps is entirely consistent, which is more than I can say for Crysis and Warhead, where your performance went up and down quite a lot.

keep postmsaa on (r_postmsaa 1)
disable nvidia fxaa (r_postmsaanvfilter 0)

@darkchazz

Oh man, I saw this r_postmsaanvfilter before but didn't think to even try it. I can't wait to try this when I am off work. Thanks man.

+1.
One of the advantages of DX11 is that developers can do a lot more things with it, and the performance hit was considerably smaller that DX10. I'm certainly seeing that here. When the full potential of DX11 is implemented in future games, it's going to be very cool.
(They probably should have skipped right over DX10.....unless you were running a monster rig, the FPS hit was ridiculous)

All other games just can't compare to crysis 2 graphics. Crysis 2 looks and performs so much better than crysis 1.

i can't get the postmsaanvfilter command to work, no worries, PostMSAA = 0 is more than fine for me, game looks lovely.

Quiet a lot of tessellation is used, more than expected but it looks damn nice on the wall and floor textures. Also you can enable Global Illumination now with e_GI = 1

Hmmm, well it wasn't quite that command, it was something else (just type r_postmsaa in the console and press tab, and it will show you the possible commands)

It let postmsaa still run and I still got my rain and got jaggies, but still ghosting. completely pointless to turn off because all it does is remove AA and keep the ghosting :/
