So Beth confirmed a while ago that the game will feature western film style duels. Are we back in the Shivering Isles again? Any NPC who would challenge us to a duel would have to be out of his/her/it's mind! Seriously though, what do you guys and gals expect from this feature?

I expect to meet them somewhere in the city or another location. Meet them there and just fight them as if you would any other enemy. It would be cool if they're were wealthier, that they would arrange a duel in the Arena.

Yah, this basically.

I think you'd have to piss someone off a lot in order for them to challenge you. I suspect you'll be the one doing the most initiating of these things, at least at high levels.

Keep in mind the leveling system has changed, so it's entirely possible that at low levels, if you get challenged to a duel, you could get destroyed.

This is what I was thinking, or some version of it at least. They would seriously have to work on the level scale and AI of the NPC to make it actually challenging. I would personally love to get destroyed during a duel. It would be a bit humbling I think. Make it seem like you aren't the only bad ass roaming around. Having consequences for picking a fight with the wrong dude/lady would be awesome.

this has the potential to be very very stupid.

what kind of anology is western style duels? what about eastern? or northern? or even southern? why are two different era's in two different universes being tethered like that? most cultures across the ages already had honor duels/battles hell it was even in morrowind. this reaks of them staring very hard at RDR, which is not a bad thing...just the anology could have been done better and I hope isn't handled by RDR where the same random [censored] who I shot to death reappears and challenges me again despite the fact I gave him a fatale headshot and left a live dynamite by his body....

I don't think that's how it works. Or at least it's not the only way.

Apparently if you get fairly strong, an NPC wanting a challenge could just approach you in the street and ask to duel you.

The leveling system won't work like this. The 'radiant story' makes things that you CAN deal with on purpose. They would use it for duels, and consequently all duels will be (probably easily) winnable.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it is from Outlaw Josey Wales!

I had the most sincere belief it was from Outlaw Josey Wales, when he's inside a saloon or something. The guy gives up on dueling him and then comes back. Damm, gotta watch that movie again. Then again, I believe this is a perfect reason >D

From the end of that video, I suppose we are supposed to be on the shorter guys side, but at the beginning, he's the one acting like an [censored] and the big guys being pretty reasonable. What's with that? I mean he's just intentionally provoking him by shoving dirt at him.

I think in the film he's provoking the guy on purpose because they are these two factions, and the short guy's lot want to show they mean business. Or something...

THIS is exactly what I have been thinking about the duels since I first read about them.....Like literally word for word. Its not a horrible idea.....but western style duel? WTF are you talking about Bethesda? I was very surprised to hear it described that way....certainly there are other ways of dueling other than 'western style' lmao. I also though of RDR when I read this....which I guess was kind of the point. But in RDR duelling was meaningless, boring, and accomplished nothing. Joe Schmoe would say "lets fight", Id shoot his gun out of his hand, and then execute him. Got boring almost immediately after doing it the first time.

Honestly I dont even care about duelling in Skyrim....unless there is something unique about it yet to be revealed. Killing nameless person after nameless person is fun, but thats what I have the wilderness for. Things like duelling are something I'll probably do once or twice to see what it is, then forget it ever existed. Kind of like horseshoes in RDR.

Anyway....thanks for summing up my thoughts in your post!

I could be wrong (it's been quite a long time since I saw the film), but I think the big guy was hired to kill the shorter one by those other guys who stormed off at the end. All the shorter guy did was get it over with in an open and honourable way...

The higher your fame, the stronger the opponent. :P The higher the infamy, the stronger the bounty hunter. Got nothing against that. Having a shoot out, magic version sounds cool to me. What would be just as cool was if at a lower level you watch to mages go at it in a town square...and you kinda italize the one who wins and uses some cool magic you like...you go on to become an expert at that very same kind of magic, only for your old idol to come up to you and ask for a duel.

I'd be like a Justin Biebier fangirl who just got asked by the Bieber himself to have a sing off. Well, maybe not exactly like that, but you get the picture.

I think it will only be western in the sense that they will challenge you, and then you will start from the traditional X amount of paces. So it basically will start with both people on a level playing field. A traditional 1 on 1. They just worded it badly. I can't wait until my first duel. I'm hoping for a big angry Orc with a battle axe. He charges me, the diminutive looking Altmer, who hasn't got a blade or bow. When all of a sudden...
