Dying Companions

Post » Thu May 26, 2011 11:00 pm

Ok, so recently i decided to go for Jericho as my follower, along with Dogmeat. I equipped him with fully repaired power armor, gave him a minigun and tons of ammo. Went to fairfax ruins and he died in 5 minutes, i figured, oh well, [censored] happens, right?

A little while later i asked Star Paladin Cross to join me in my by then righteous quest of clearing the wasteland of raiders and feral ghouls, and the first stop was Museum of History, offices, for the quest "Head of State" (think thats the one) and she dies when fighting a glowing one.

All this happens while dogmeat is my second companion, and he's single-handedly tanked like 3 behemoths between level 4 and 28.

Since then i travel only with Dogmeat and my Prototype Medic Power Armor.

My question is, as such, is it just me or are the companions (save from dogmeat and fawkes) just dropping like flies?

Its because dogmeat and fawkes are listed as creatures and have alot more hp then human allies, if i remember right, it also happens with the robot and ghoul allie.

But dying pretty much first fight is kinda rediculous, I'd even given them plenty of stimpaks and all

Slightly off-topic, but Lucky Harith has been limping in my game since level 10. H'es got about 50% health. I've successfully reverse pickpocketed stimpacks into his inventory in the hope that he will use them, but he never does. I've never seen any companion use one either

I've gotten Lucky to heal himself by provoking him into combat with me. It's a little tricky because he and his guard will pursue you. I've done it and then run away as fast as possible to put enough distance between me and them so I could FT away. I've not had problems with him being hostile to me afterwards and I can't remember if I waited three days before I saw him again. I saved before I tried it of course. ;)

Followers will use stimpaks if they are catastrophically injured and not killed; I don't know the exact percentage at which it happens but something pretty low. It happens pretty rarely, in my experience, but it absolutely does happen.

@deagle1991 - RL-3 also is also tanklike with BS like Fawkes and Dogmeat. Charon is not. He's like the human followers.

On which system do you play? If you play on PC you can use the comman ResetHealth on him to give him a full heal and restore all his limbs.

Cross has to be given a good weapon for her to be rreally combat-effective. She has a laser pistol as her disatnce weapon (woefully inadequate against a glowing one), and a super sledge for up-close. Problem is, her tag skills are big guns, small guns, and energy weapons. So if she goes up against a powerful enemy with her standard kit, she's roadkill.

winawer - go read what I wrote up above :) I had tried giving him stimpaks and it wasn't working so I thought to myself, "Self, if the followers heal after combat, maybe other NPC's will too." So I tried it and it worked. I was playing on the 360 at the time. It's worth a shot. It was a short experiment. I did it and then I may have waited three days to make sure he wasn't still mad at me before I went to see if his HP was restored.

@fireal - Are you backing up your followers? Fairfax Ruins has a swarm of raiders, including missile launcher raider. It's easy to understand how Jericho might be killed. He isn't impervious to damage like Dogmeat is with BS. If you take him in there against a missile launcher and automatic weapons and you guys are seriously outnumbered he could be killed unless you are doing something to help prevent that. Same with SPC in the MOH. The followers aren't terrifically smart; they will do the same things regardless of enemy or numbers of enemies. Pre-BS I couldn't take Dogmeat anywhere because he would charge anything in the Wasteland and die immediately. He only got to stay in my Megaton house. My followers rarely die but I listen to them during combat and how they are responding to the situation and if I hear one of them taking too much damage I run over and start killing whatever is near them. I do this regardless of what weapons they are carrying or what armor they are wearing. The only followers I never worry about are the BS versions of Fawkes and Dogmeat.

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore you, there must have been a few posts in quick succession and I completely missed yours. I'll definitely give it a try, many thanks. That is if I can get more than ten minutes play out of it tonight without the game freezing

A perfect weapon to give her would be the Alien Blaster. When NPCs use weapons their condition doesn't degrade and they don't use up any ammo so that eliminates both of the Alien Blaster's major drawbacks (hard to keep in good condition, limited ammo). And if I'm not mistaken she is the only follower who has Energy Weapons as a tag skill so that makes her the natural choice to have it.

Now that you mention it, I think it was a Missile Launcher that killed him. I'll make sure I stay close to them and personally administer stimpaks to them in the future :)

I'm level 30 and decided to take Dogmeat's Puppy out for a walk just the other day. I was under the impression that he would have huge amounts of health. He didn't last more than 10 seconds against an Albino Radscorpion. I let him attack all by himself and just watched, to see how he would get on. Sure, he had more health than the original Dogmeat, but it was a complete mismatch.

No, the opposite. Dogmeat's puppy levels with the player and has significantly more health than original Dogmeat. Even so, you still need to look after him.

The Alien blaster would be devastating in Cross's hands, especially if you can get a fully financed Crazy Wolfgang to repair it first, bring it near max condition.
