Dynamic Faction Armor

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 10:36 pm

I liked how in New Vegas, if you wore NCR Armor, Legion soldiers would shoot you on sight. It adds a layer of depth and realism to a game where the player isn't a God that can walk around and do anything at whim.

Seeing how Skyrim didn't have it, we probably won't get it in F4. It wasn't even a hard system. See legion soldiers before they see you? Take the armor off if you want to talk to them. Then again, if you want to be friendly to the legion, why the hell are you wearing NCR armor? Or is this too hard for most people.

It would be a welcome addition, for sure, but from the way Bethesda talks about NV (never) I doubt it will be in the game.

I also hope civilian NPCs react to what you're wearing. For example if you're wearing raider armor they might run for guards or shoot at you.

I would like faction armor if they made a few changes to make it actually WORK worth a damn, which it didn't in NV.

-Make disguises REQUIRE a helmet if your faction rep is above or below neutral.

Its beyond stupid that while having very high, or very low, faction rep with the NCR or Legion that no one in either faction was able to figure out its me, despite not wearing a helmet, when my description would be well known in either faction for being their hero or worst enemy.

-Make disguises only active if put on more then X feet from someone.

Its equally stupid that I can put on Legion armor, with or without a helmet, RIGHT in front of an NCR solider, and they automatically forget who I am, and start attacking me, even if my rep is like idolized, and they know I am not a Legion agent.

-Similarly, make disguises deactivate, if not wearing a helmet, and you get within X feet of a NCR/Legion solider while having medium to high positive rep with them.

While I can understand them attacking me from a distance, as they cant see my face, once I get within a close ranger of them, they SHOULD be able to figure out its me, and stop attacking, whilst also making some snide remarks abut how stupid it is to go walking around like that.

-Add some way, maybe a perk or something, that allows one to fool even higher ranking officers in a faction.

Its fairly dumb that at no point can the player get some sort of training on how to act like a member of X faction, and thus anyone even halfway up the totem pole can see through your disguise simply by you getting within 10 feet of them.

-Remove the ability of dogs to see through disguises, or at least some up with some explanation as to why they can.

No Legion dog knows the scent of every legionary. If if was that easy to rile the dogs, how the hell d o they deal with patrols from other places coming in, or new troop transfers. If some faction coats themselves in some chemical for some reason, as an excuse as to why the dogs CAN see through the disguise, let the player get some and apply it to themselves to hide themselves from the dogs.

-Most importantly, make it actually USEFUL.

Probably the single greatest fault of NV's disguise system is that it had no use in any quest. On top of all the other problems it had, it not being used in any quest just made it USELESS. If a gameplay mechanic does nothing, dont waste time making it.

Its utterly pathetic that Skyrim, a game without a disguise system, was able to implement a more realistic disguise system for one of its main quests then NV was able to when it had an entire gameplay feature devoted to it. Skyrm was able to take into account

-Your character's race

-Your character's fface being covered or not

-Distance from the enemy NPC

In order to check to see if they would see through your disguise. With Argonians and Khajiit having their disguises fail instantly due to their tail. Humans, orcs, dunmer, and bosmer able to slip through until the last guard so long as they stayed far enough away from the patrolling NPCs, and only Altmer being able to make it past the last guard, with a speech check.

Of course. If you're wearing the clothing of the enemy you should be fired upon

I'm of mixed feelings about it. On one hand, dressing up as a member of a recognized faction should be appropriately acknowledged in game, but on the other particular types of armor shouldn't be isolated to a faction.

I'm all for faction armor provided that the creation system allows us to 'repaint' cool armors that we'd like to wear to remove the faction effects from them.

I'm more for something like faction specific identifiers. Like armbands, or headbands, something small but significant to each faction.

Was stupid that equipping a suit with cop bodyarmor over top automatically made me a powderganger.

Because the powerganger suit was underneath.

I understand what you mean though. I'd hate it if an indistinguishable bulletproof vest was tied to a faction. New Vegas generally steered away from it. For example, only specific BoS gear made you affiliated with the BoS, rather than all power armor.

This is where I would have liked to have seen the modular armor system in. You could have the choice of either A) "defacing" the armor and just using the kevlar vest over your vault suit/clothing, or B.) you keep the kevlar with the powder ganger outfit.

Faction emblems / color schemes put on armor parts would be a good idea. Maybe already part of the crafting system. Look at the T-60 Power Armor on the Fallout 4 wikia, you can put different Color Schemes on them AND each scheme adds a different effect to the armor.

This would be a good system. I hope they do this, along with the reputation system.

this to me is kinda the best way to do it, keep all armours faction neutral by default and give the player the option to make it faction armour.

Doesnt shove the system in someones face, but its still there for those who wants to use it.

It'll probably just be snarky comments from guards. "You're not fooling anyone wearing that armor. I know you are with the Thieves Guild."

I don't know if or how this is going to happen, considering what we saw from the gameplay (layered clothing, mix-and-match).

Actually they did something similar way back in Morrowind. If you did the Imperial Legion's quest line, they put a special marker on certain chest armors that labeled them as a "Legion Uniform" and if you weren't wearing your "Legion Uniform" the quest giver wouldn't talk to you until you put it on. So, I could see the faction armor as just being a certain upper body piece that counts as faction armor and you can wear whatever you want with it.

Interviewers, please read this article. Ask this question of Todd, please! I would be extremely impressed with Bethesda if they were to keep this RPG mechanic.

at this point and time I doubt Todd would answer the question, things are still being worked on and is still in risk of getting cut, so giving a specific game mechanic answer is risky for beth.

Unless they let you paint over the armor to make it faction-neutral and let companions carry faction armor, absolutely not. I don't want to have to swap a good armor out just because it bears a permanent logo that magically makes my friends cease to recognize me. And I can't count how many times I had to juggle weapons and armor with my companions because they refused to carry faction armor. The system was rather flawed.

Out of curiosity, how did the NCR react to a player equipping Legion equipment directly in front of them? Did they open fire right away or did they display some level of intelligence (lol).

I think that faction armor may be a bad idea for Fallout. The world is wrecked and what people wear comes from scavenging, not from factories, and everybody is a scavenger. it is more likely in such a world that factions would identify with colors and symbols, things that they can produce themselves.

Yes. I appreciated this feature in FONV and I think it would be great if they incorporate it in some way in FO4.

It surely was a nice touch in previous fallout games, and it give you more choices, so i am all for it. I seriously can't find a single good reason to vote against it. People that voted NO probably were not reading your post and thought that you mean that dynamic lego armor from E3 show video. Im not sure if i find it good or bad myself, it reminds me of dead space a bit too much.

Totally necessary feature.

It was ridiculous to have Enclave armor in Fo3, and still be shot on sight by Enclave members. (and still be welcomed with open arms by Lyons)
