Dynamic?

Post » Sun Aug 08, 2010 9:45 pm

Ive read in various places about dynamic snow, but what does it actually mean, just that the snow accumulates on the ground, is this the same with rain? as in it creates puddles?

Sorry if this has already been asked

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eKzwKFlz8Y is one of the things dynamic could mean, the littlest things that could make a big difference in a game. When you play Oblivion and it snows, do you notice that while you are running it still falls down than actually hitting your face? Thats the dynamic they are talking about. Again, it can mean other things too.

is that also like with the rain, as in when you look into the sky and move it kind of follows you ?

A lot of the previews coming out of the Park City, Utah demo mentioned Todd stopping on his way to Bleak Falls to show the snow dynamically covering a rock.

It's just cosmetics if it has no influence in character movement.

Dynamic snow, based on what we've heard, seems to essentially mean that snow accumulates on the surroundings. In Oblivion, snow fall was just an effect you saw on the screen, while areas with snow would have snow textured and modeled onto objects, this was static, it did not change based on how much it was snowing and such. In Skyrim, you'll actually be able to see snow accumulate on the ground, on rocks, and such, presumably that also means it gradually melts when it warms up. Whether rain will be given the same attention or not I'm not completely certain.

Rain hasn't been mentioned even once yet unfortunately.

Think of it as "smart or thinking" snow like how should i fall on this tree branch without falling right through it or that is a vertical wall i cant land on that. Lol basicly its smart snow to put in bluntly, from my understanding.

I don't know how they're going to implement the melting of snow.

Question I have is: will we walk through/in snow or walk on snow (as if it was just a layer you always walk on top of). If it's the latter, then it's a disappointment, especially since the game focuses so much on snow.
I mean, come on, a game like Uncharted 2 even did it, and snow is like on one level there, or what? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4MvrI7u9ZI

that will be really good if they do it, my problem is the fact that the rain goes through things on oblivion, e.g. youd be standing under an arch and rain would magically come through, it may sound weird but i like rainy weather in the elder scrolls :)

This would be awesome. Personally it would improve my experience with this game a ton of something along these lines was in.

That's because rain had no collision. Neither had snow. That's changed now. Was even changed in a Morrowind mod. The question I'm wondering about is depth. The depth can never be real though, that would kill the performance of every single computer. It has to be done in illusionary ways so that it looks real, but isn't. If Uncharted 2 did it which has a minor focus on snow compared to Skyrim, I don't see why Skyrim shouldn't have it. As weird as it sounds, it would make running in snow a lot more fun, cool and realistic. Like a whole new experience for the theme of snow.

I also like rainy weather and hope to see some water layer effects and splash effects at least. That's pretty standard in modern games right now. Perhaps even rain puddles but I doubt it a bit... but perhaps.

yes i dont think its weird to like the snow, it makes the game more realistic and so makes the game feel... well better, and the rain would be cool if puddles formed

Does no one worry about how will his computer react to snow?

I can tell you, i bought a new computer month ago, very good one also (8 GB RAM and 4GB video ram all the rest also very good, ill say the names of the hardware if u guys really like to)
When I go to the golden coast in oblivion and put max graphics and max distance grass - i get bad frame per second...

Snow will basicly be grass, alot of textures all over the place moving... @_@ this makes me scared. Will I be able to play on high graphics without bad frames per second?

Oblivion was horribly badly optimized in many different ways. Nothing to worry about now.
