[WIPz] Dynamic Weather + Rain

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 9:58 pm

Helloo!

Was doodling in the Geck the other day and this happened:

http://i830.photobucket.com/albums/zz221/Xepha/dynamic%20weather%20plus%20rain%20wip/dwrainwipscreen4.jpg

Basically, it was something of an attempt at the weather type that would appear under heavy rain conditions. I think, maybe, sunrise and mid-day are a little too saturated. Sunset isn't too bad. And, well, midnight is just dark... Should look interesting with lightning though.

Having said that, I have a bunch of reference photos pulled off the net which show similar kinds of colour schemes. It seems to be very easy to over-do things in the Geck, thinking you have things looking good, only to have look really bad when you get them in game. So it's a balancing act. I've got Stalker on stand-by in case I run out of ideas though! ;)

I'm not sure you can tell from these first attempts but I've used the weather type that appears around megaton after you've nuked as a basis to work from. There's a nice blur effect going on as well as close fog. Helps to give the impression of rain mist.

I imagine light rain will be quite a bit less over the top, but I do want heavy rain to quite dramatic, something new/interesting/exciting - a real bad-ass radioactive post apocalyptic rainstorm! :shocking:

Anyway, enough rambling for a couple of screenshots.

Anyone have any thoughts? Good/Bad, say what you like. :)

If you do a rain mod, I really hope the performance is better than enhanced waether, rain and snow. I get a max fps of 30 with my 4890 :(

Well, that's going to be tricky, since I was going to use Enhanced Weather - Rain as the basis for my rain. o_O That is, it will be a requirement to have EWR (it's assets (sounds etc)) installed and its .esm activated (the esps won't be needed)). At least, that's how I have had it working in the past. Maybe I can require an older version of EWR be installed - they seemed to perform better. Well, if push comes to shove, I could always try and make my own, now I know how it's done - maybe there's a more optimized way of making rain? I really don't know. *Brain explodes* :nuke:

But what did you think of my lovely pictures! :P

Screens look great! I hope the performance isn't an issue as I'll only have the 9800 GT on my PC.

Those screens look AWESOME.

Only concern I have about your mod is the weather changing every three hours(?) I think is what you have it set for. That seems a little fast ... maybe make it last for six hours or so?

As for the poster who noticed slowdowns with this 4890 and the rain/snow mod ... I have the same card and haven't noticed any slowdowns with rain, at least not yet ...

I loved the pictures, Xepha! But yeah, for some reason, whenever it rains/snows using enhanced weather, my FPS invariably drops below 35. I tried the high performance sounds but it had no effect. The performance drop is due to the rain itself. I remember my old 8800GT handled the rain a bit better. My fps only dropped by ~10. I don't know why the 4890 has issues. All my games play flawlessly, and Fallout 3 plays perfectly fine 60fps with drops in the 40s during heavy fighting. I play at 1080p/Ultra high/4xAA/16xAF.

Jamesrh, what settings do you play at, and what's your fps during rain storms?

I play at 1900x1220, all settings maxed, 4xAA,8xAF. Don't know my exact settings but I haven't noticed any slowdown during storms yet.

Sorry, meant to say "I don't know my exact framerate" not settings.

Cool!

Thanks for the feedback. ^_^

Re: FPS. Seems we get varied results. I myself am running a C2D E8500 @ 3.16GHz + 640MB Asus GeForce 8800 GTS @ 1680 x 1050 w/ Medium/High settings (seriously overdue on an upgrade!). FPS varies a lot (30-60 (towards 30 with v2 rain) and while I don't know if there is anything I can really do to allievate the performance hit (since it's not my mod) maybe I'll get lucky since I will only be using it's assets not the whole mod (scripts, etc) or like I said earlier, use an older version. I'll figure something out - it'd be pretty pointless creating a mod I'm not going to use!

Heh. :)

So, anyway, further to previous posts:

I've got it all working using Enhanced Weather Rain 1.5 as a base - I'm not sure if it's the slightly different rain or the amount of sound effects used, but EW 1.5 seems to give better performance than EW 2.0. Invariably, I'll lose around 15-20 fps when it rains, more if there's lots going on or wandering around near Rivet City.

But it's out of my hands to improve performance any further and it doesn't rain quite so much with Dynamic Weather than with stand-alone Enhanced Weather. And really, my main goal was only to provide alternative weather types for when it rains - which I think I'm quite happy with. :)

Should have a RELz up before too long - just pondering whether my readme actually makes any sense at all and, uh.. stuff! :lmao:

Performance aside. I was understanding rain and snow do not have collision. Thus they go through walls and people plus everything else?

Yeah that's pretty much how it works. Nothing to be done about it really, although I believe Nilla had a rain+collison proof of concept/prototype working a while ago.

Also, slight set back on the RELz front, after I realised I hadn't tested Light Rain as much as I should have done.

I know what it is, just need a day or two to set up a few new imagespace modifiers.
