Each race should start somewhere different..

Post » Thu Jan 07, 2010 11:48 pm

instead of each race starting in the same prison cell... how about each race starts in a different part of the world map?

say if you start a nord, you begin high up in a mountaintop village..

argonian could start just having crossed the border from cyrodil.

dark elf could start of in a deep mine.

imperial in the aftermath of a pub brawl

kahjiit surrounded by a squad of his dead thief friends.

... im not talking about seperate MQ's for each... but each race should have a unique initial quest based on their current predicament.. after that its up the player.

That just reminds me of what MMO's do as well the place you in like your own localized area, its a good idea but it only depends on what the main quest is like and to be honest I can't see us not starting in jail.

I would rather have them focus on other things.... and make the intro sequence much less restricting than Oblivion.

I think it’s a good idea in general. :lightbulb: I mean in a perfect world I’d want it that way, but there’s also the story to think about.

Since you’d have to get to point B to start the story (They couldn’t start the MQ 10 deferent ways, know what I mean?), point A would probably end up being pretty arbitrary, and thus, a lot of scripting for not much pay off.

Good idea for most roleplaying games, but with TES, I just don't think something like this would work.

I like the idea, a lot. But, as RobotMilk just said, it would be diffictult to string it all together.

Yeah, why not.

I also would like the idea of selecting some background info before you begin.
Nothing too constricting, but just social class, criminal record, etc... leading different hooks to let you set off to your adventures.

They should do anything to enhance the feeling you're actually part of the world/society.

The "being kept prisoner for unknown reason" is as much liberating as it is ridiculous.
In Oblivion and Morrowind you start with no background at all but they push you towards a main quest with a predefined destiny anyway. What's the point?

If by restrict you mean enhances, then yes.

As I stated before. Starting without any background doesn't enhance roleplaying, but having one predefined background is no good either.
Being able to chose your background would be ideal, as long as it's not too constricting

Well, a blank background lets you choose whatever you want if you use your imagination, but I do agree, being able to choose background could be great (if your background is an actual part of the game it makes it more immersive IMO).

Having a predestined background defined by the race you choose is not good for roleplaying, but getting to choose any background you please independent of race... that would be okay.

I dislike this idea. Like Dragon Age: Origins, the beginning may be unique, but afterwards it's the same-old game. When doing it like Origins it actually makes the rest of the game, to me personally, feel very static. It would only work correctly if the entire story then also really focusses in on your character, with many events based on your beginnings. Too much work and tricky to do right, in my opinion.

Besides, many good RPGs start in a cell.

Oh yeah, I'm sorry must have misinterpreted the question. Yeah, if playing an imperial automatically means that your father was a guard and a Breton starts as a novice of the mages guild and so on... yeah that would be stupid.

I'd rather have a generic start in which you started out as a prisoner being transported somewhere when raiders attack the convoy and leave everybody for dead. You pick yourself up, scraqe up some random armor and loots spread all over the debris, and start the game.

I'm pretty sure I meant "restricts" with the word "restricts", thank you.

It reminds me of the sacred and dragon age. pretty interesting idea, but I prefer to start like Oblivion, at least in this game.

that would ruin the epic you are a hero directly chosen by the gods and you we're put here for a reason thing. would make you more of a farmboy who accidentaly found some shiny thingie and got svcked into an adventure than a badass hero.

it would be kinda hard, because the main storyline is linear, so it has to start in the same place
