Wow. I wonder if they'll be a rougher aftermath? Like Tsunamis?

That's what you get living on a tectonically unstable planet

Good thing no serious damage. A 7 is a pretty big one.

7.3? That's quite tame, for modern Japan. People shrug off fivers or so each month. One should experience that at least once in their lives, everything shaking, foreigners freaking out, the locals just grabbing the closes tightly placed object. ^_^

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale is logarithmic meaning that a 6.0 is ten times more powerful than a 5.0, and a 7.0 is ten times more powerful than a 6.0. So Yea, a 7.3 is a MUCH MUCH bigger deal than a 5.

Speaking from experience, there are a few more factors to it. Mainly, where the epicenter is located. A shallow quake will create far more damage than one that may be bigger on the Richter scale even though it's smaller in magnitude.

8.8 magnetude earthquake hits the North-east. 4 Meter tsunami at the port of Kamaishi

Watching that tsunami destroy everything in its path is just frightening.

Don't forget the materials of the buildings. Certain materials resonate more than others (brick = BAD).

The wave approaching right now... It's just huge and still looks a significant ways off the coast, meaning it'll only get bigger :cold:

You can actually see it from where you're at? At midnight!? I suggest moving a bit east before it hits.

Very scary. Massive quakes in Chile, New Zealand and now Japan. Lots of shaking on the Pacific Rim. We've been fairly quiet (from large quakes) since the 1990s. Hmmm.... Hope the tsunami doesn't hit our coast or Hawaii.

Watching cars trying in vain to speed away from an incoming tsunami was incredible. The geologist on CNN said the 8.9 was the 7th strongest earthquake on record.
