I don't know if anyone else knows this or I have been missing very blatant tips/suggestions but when you are within interaction distance of a companion, simply press and hold "A" or whatever button it is for the other platforms and it drops you into the command-mode real-time.

Anyone else have handy tips and tricks like this one to share?

Not sure how widespread the knowledge of this tip is but here goes.

You can hotkey equipment from your favourites menu to the left and right directional buttons for even faster usage. Just highlight the equipment you want to hotkey and press the left or right button twice.

my favorite ones are the lanterns you can shoot down for fire AoE and the puddles of oil for the same effect...

I didn't realize this til like level 23 so I'm glad someone is speaking up. Missed some great oppurunities for the upper hand in an ambush. Always thought that oil was just a coloring effect on the floor until I hit a Falmer standing in it with the Fire Breath shout. Roasted Falmer.
