Ebony and Glass in Skyrim

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 12:17 am

So, Vvardenfell has been destroyed. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't glass and ebony equipment based on volcanic glass from Red mountain? With that in mind, will glass and ebony weapons and armour be far rarer in Skyrim? Or are there still other areas where ebony and glass can be mined?

I really hope that the stronger armour and weapons are made to be extremely rare again, I found it so much more rewarding to piece together ebony, daedric or glass armour instead of simply being given it by bandits at lvl 20 or so.Plus it was extremely satisfying to walk around wearing armour that was probably worth more than the combined equipment of entire legion forts.

Considering every bandit and marauder in Cyrodiil having glass/ebony/daedric equipment, apparently Vvardenfell is where glass and ebony were ultra-rare.

Well said.

Also, just because Vvardenfell/Morrowind is no more, doesn't mean all the Ebony/Glass armors/weapons dissolved. It just means they're (Hopefully) incredibly rare and a sign of prestige and worth.

Have to agree, anything better than Mithril/Orcish was far too common in Oblivion, the rarer the find, the greater the player satisfaction.

I am guessing that we will probably see Silver as one of the higher end materials in Skyrim. Daedric armor will obviously be accessible as long as there are Daedric shrines still. But I also expect the amount of Ebony and Glass to be much lower. Maybe some Stalhrim too!

Isn't Glass weapons and armor mainly from Summerset Isle? I could be wrong though...

I said this on one of my own topics but here is is again:
Just came up with an idea:
How about you can help some people trying to smuggle some Ebony from Morrowind making it really rare, not every 2nd bandit has Ebony armour. That'd be fun.

Morrowind, actually. It's volcanic glass.

I certainly hope so. In Morrowind having high quality armor, especially full sets, were quite the sign of status. Even dwemer armor wasn't seen on NPCs often, even if bandits had a lot of them (in boxes). It really gave the player a sense of progression in the game world - that they have become powerful and such. Oblivion never had this feeling due to armor leveling scaling and such.

Solstheim had Ebony I believe, not to mention the Volcano blowing up wouldn't necessarily make it impossible to still get the materials. It would stop mining for a while, but now it might be easier than ever to get, then again, if its imposisble to live there it may be more difficult, but probably not impossible.

However, I am certain that both Glass and Ebony will be in, and their rarity will be entirely dependent on how the developers want to handle it, not on what the lore says. Obviously, they'll always be high end armors, because they've been that way in all the other games.

I think they should be rare but they should still be around. If you think about it pieces of armour will be in circulation for centuries, being passed on from one owner to another. Presumably they don't wear out very fast.

it would be cool if it was. it would make me think "back in the day, ebony and glass armor where so easy to get." just being able to think that would make it feel more real! except glass armor, even though looked cool, was horrible...

I'd b surprised to see armor in Skyrim made from material from Elder Scrolls Games. I think the armor in the game is going to be used to reflect the history and theme of the land of Skyrim. I expect it to be very rugged, brutish, and beat up. Personally I think the Ebony and Glass armor looked too goofy, or atleast the helmets. I sure hope Bethesda gets to work more on helmets to make them not look out of place and strange. I'd like to see the return of Chitin armor, or atleast the dynamic style it was crafted in.

This would include daedric weapons and armor also, since daedric is made from ebony.

Wasn't there an Ebony Dagger in the Trailer. I hope both are in although they should be rarer then they were in Oblivion especially Glass.

Glass and ebony doesn't always need to be from Morrowind, like the one ebony mine in solestiem

What would really hurt Ebony/glass mining is the loss of the infrastructure, not the damage to the land. There's still probably volcanic activity in the region after all. So we'd see less ebony/glass, but only because a lot of the infrastructure that mined and traded said materials is gone.

Personally I'd like to see some new armors more fitting to the region (perhaps the return of Nordic ringmail and trollbone), but if they do put it in they should make it so that not every bandit walking around has glass/ebony/daedric armor.

Well, if Skyrim is to Oblivion what Oblivion was to Morrowind ........

Everysingle rat and snapperfish will drop a full set of Daedric armor while your still at level 1.

I think it would be cool if you found or mined your own pieces of glass or ebony and smithed your own armor out of it, seeing that smithing is a new skill in this game.

Agreed. I would love to see Stalhrim make a return as well. Hopefully they make the armor look better though... that Morrowind set looked horrible.

If any of you went into an armorer/blacksmith shop and the master armorer was selling like, a pair of ebony boots and a glass left pauldron, would that be upsetting? I'm wanting to know because I'm working on a blacksmith mod for TESIII at the moment and I want to see if I'm pushing it too far by having rare metal armor for sale. (There is no daedric of anything in this shop, by the way)

Well, considering an http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Dronos_Llervu in vanilla TESIII has almost a complete set of glass armor for sale in Ghostgate's Tower of Dusk... ;)
