Ebony Mail worth it?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:07 am

Playing a Assassin build right now and after i saw/heard about the Ebony Mail(from the Daedric quest Boethiah's calling),i tought it would pretty neat to get it.But iam not so sure about it anymore, since its classifyed as heavy armor for unknown reasons. Is it worth geting it beside looking nice and all?Does muffle stack(with nightingale boots for example).

Thanks everyone!

I don't understand why this was moved.

You're not revealing anything, like where and how you get it, etc.

If you're using heavy armor, yeah get it, I think it looks great. And with some points in smithing you might be able to upgrade it and use it for a while.

I just got the nightingale armor last night, and don't like the looks of it. That face mask is disgusting, I think. But don't those boots have muffle on it, plus I thought it said you move silently? Or has my memory deserted me??

Personally, I do a lot of mixing and matching. I'm using heavy armor, but recently switched out the gauntlets and boots (I think) for pieces of light armor, because they both had a 15% increase in archery damage. Also found a ring with another 15% increase. So that's a 45% increase in damage that I can't turn down, the bow being my primary weapon.

I guess what I'm saying is, use whatever you feel will help you most, or what looks best lol.

That's the one thing I think is great about this game - freedom.

Good luck.

I really like the Ebony Mail, however, I go the double enchanted dragonscale, dragonbone and Daedric armor route. Only thing I didnt like about the Ebony Mail is if a hostile person gets near you and you are near guards, the poison from the suit would make the guard (or any other normally friendly person) become hostile to you because it would be like an attack.

It's hard for me to reconcile a stealthy character with heavy armor. But it's a personal choice. I either go all heavy, all light, or if a pure mage, just robes. A practical reason for that is because you don't get the 25% protection bonuses that come with wearing all of X type of armor as well as the bonus for wearing a matching set. Of course if you don't select those perks then it doesn't matter one bit. Go with what you like.

The problem is, as said above, mixing and matching the armor looses you the best perks - like wind walker for light armor. And of course matching set perks.

There are mods on skyrim nexus to make ebony mail a light piece, that is a solution for sure.

Actually, "mail" IS heavy armor for the most part historically. It's not as heavy (or protective) as plate, but it's FAR moreso than chain, brigandine, studded etc. If people want ebony mail to be light armor, it really needs to be classed as (and reworked to look like) chain.

It's not light armor, and probably was never intended to be light armor. A mod to make it light armor is workable, but still not really "right".

Oh dont get me wrong, i agree with this sentiment. (in many of my rpgs i wear heavy armor on the chest, light everywhere else)

What i wont abide is the dumb perk requirements that make us suffer for mix matching. The light armor fix is one solution, another to nix the full set req would be fine too.

Well.... I don't ever use anything but leather. Is it "optimal" as far as damage mitigation? Hell no - but I can't STAND the way anything else looks, and the only way I can stand leather is with a mod (the armor in this game is UGLY.... it's even worse than 90% of the crap they call armor in WoW....) So I just deal with it. I level slower than a lot of people probably (and that's not bad from my PoV anyway - I don't take ANY stone until I can get up to Solitude and then go on to get the steed stone - I don't need to level any faster than I am already....) but that's fine, I'm not in any sort of contest here.

With mods, it's not too bad. I have earrings (two options - clamps and loops - both craftable and enchantable), cloaks (craftable/enchantable), a Khajiit ring mod, and instead of the UNBELIEVABLY ugly leather helmet, a mod which allows you to craft said helmet into an upgradable enchantable circlet.

[Um.... Yeah. I really DO care about looks in this game. So sue me....]

Worth for the looks and for the enchantment. The real downside is the smoke thing which becomes annoying after a while

Just an fyi- ebony mail is only muffled when you are sneaking, so no running/sprinting silently if you are depending on the mail for the muffle effect.

The muffle effect of the mail is 1.0, so it does "stack" with other muffles, but any value at or above 1.0 is complete muffle so it doesnt matter.

It's a terrible item.

The graphic drives me nuts, and the effect makes it near impossible for you to get a sneak attack. (Which is ironic, because the armor is supposed to help you sneak better)

It's honestly more about looks than how good it actually is, and the Ebony Mail is just the regular Ebony Armor without shoulder pads.

I’m a sneaky type myself and wear Ebony armor. Primarily went towards Ebony armor as I wanted to create/smith Ebony/Daedric bows and therefore had to follow the Heavy side of the smithing tree. Not quite ready for Dragon plate but look forward to the weigh savings.
I use the muffle spell, bit of a hassle having to toggle between spell and bow, but it gives me excellent sneak abilities. From what I understand the muffle boots from DB or TG are .5 value compared to the muffle spell being 1.0 so I do not bother with these light armor boots. I have the Heavy perk to grant +25% armor if all are Heavy. Still waiting for the ‘XX boots of muffle’ that I can disenchant and add the virtue to a pair of heavy boots. I also understand I will be waiting a long time for these to appear. ?

ebony mail is poop, it looks funny and the fart that surrounds you whenever you sneak gets boring after 2 seconds

Sounds like a great piece of armor to give your follower. Helps them sneak better, poisons enemies. As long as it doesn't poison you, you're golden. Ima do that.

In fact, I'll pair it with the final dragon mask for them and make my follower a badass looking stealthy powerhouse.

I like the ebony mail, but it's a pain if you're on a quest where you're supposed to fight with allies as the poison enchantment hits them as well and can turn them hostile

Just an fyi, there is a mod that reverts the ebony mail to match the power it had in morrowind, i am going to get that one, since the abilities are totally different. I believe the mod puts 25% magic resist and 50% fire resist on the mail, and takes away the muffle and poison aura.
