Economy Balance and DLC

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2011 12:27 am

I like a lot of the things that bethesda is doing, but for some reason It doesn't seem like a very good Idea to have no weapon degradation. Keep in mind that Im coming off of fallout 3, where it was a major aspect of the gameplay. It was also a measure that kept the "wallet" in check (at least in the beginning) and acually made me feel immersed, like I was trying to survive. I mean, already all ES games have had economy problems, where you just have so much gold that you don't even know what to do with it, add in that you can just repeat the "jobs" shown in the demo continuously, it seems like it will turn out the same as before.

One last thing, One problem the devs for some reason cannot adress is the integration of dlc. Almost always they just have a message pop up, and it is usually poorly done and jarring, the only exception to this is probably Knights of the Nine (and even that was pretty heavy handed). Its just that for people playing for the first time with the goty edition, as soon as they start playing they get a ton of pop up messages, and usually the DL content is not a good way to start a new game for the first time, usually due to overpowered loot, which is an issue of its own. They feel obliged in every dlc to introduce some overpowered reward that means you never have to buy another sword again, plus it means that you can just go strait to the good stuff at the beginning. The worst offenders of this is probably the fallout 3 dlc. Non degrading T-51 armor (which took a [censored]load of effort in the original game to get, and even that set degraded). Tesla canon (No comment). Chinese stealth armor (no more having to improve my sneak, Im permanently invisible), Gauss Rifle........... Note that I have just played broken steel and anchorage, and I already have the best armor and weapon and the whole game, that said I also happen to know that The Pitt gives you the best melee weapon in the game as well.

So in short my main worries are:

- Too easy to get vast quantities of gold
- Weapon Degradation (ties in with above)
- Poorly Integrated DLC
- Overpowered DlC loot

What do you guys think?

I agree with everything that's been said. For me also, I did Anchorage and the Pitt about 25 hours in. From the Pitt I got that stealth armor which undoubtedly was badass, but also removed the need for Stealth Boys. And yes also the T-51 armor, made me near invincible for the duration of the game. Ok so I could have easily have not used the equipment but it's not the point.

The money issue was huge in Fallout 3 for me, but NV not so much. Probably because I learnt some things, and bought the high powered Gun Runner weaponry near the end for fighting off gangs of Deathclaws at once. I like the weapon degradation too, something that made you want to plan out weapon usage ahead of a mission and so on.

I think it does not bother me but that is entirely subjective :)

Also usually the DLC comes with a description about what "good and special" item you will lucky to get with it. And DLC can be activated/desactivated. So one is not forced to use them immediatly with a level 1 character. Even with the DLC installed, the player can choose to postpone his DLC adventure if he worries about overpowered items.

Now we know most people won't read anything and just start the game with everything enable as you hinted. So yes in that aspect for people who shares your worries, it can be game breaking balance/loot collecting wise.

With complete expansion like Morrowind or Oblivion ones that's not a problem, the size of the DLC, the new story elements and its content are incentive enough. But with short DLC, there is need for stronger incentive for it to be sold. And it's no secret, special equipement is a favorite one amongst the overall player base.

Well, you are right, you can disable and enable it when you want, but it is my belief that it is bad game balance when the player has to purposely reject an extremely powerful item, just so that they can progress through the game the way it was designed (and all the obstacles and effort tht encompasses) A new player with the goty won't necessarily know not to do *this* quest and not take *that* object or disable x plugins. Honetly, I try to limit what I know about a game before it comes out, so that I am surprised and don't hold any expectations. It shoud be a worry of the developers to make sure that the content is accessed when it is appropriate (when the character is strong enough, when the player has a decent understanding of the game world, etc), and not before then.

In Fallout 3 and New Vegas i found that i spent a lot of the money on stimpaks and other medical items because i play on a difficulty i can't really handle so i i found myself short on cash almost all the time while other items also cost enough to make a broke wanderer lol

I understand what you mean as to much does take away from the joy but i bet you can find many ways to spend those mooooney or just give it to a beggar if you want lol

btw what was the point of giving money to beggars? do you get like karma or something in oblivion? (sorry noob on TES)
