Editing Arena (and another question)

Post » Sun May 25, 2014 2:07 am

I want to fix some Arena dialogue. Specifically, the "map quest" dialogue for the Necromancer's AMULET. The guy at the bar refers to Necromancer ROBES the whole conversation. Here is what I've tried so far...

Using Notepad, I can open a file called ARTFACT1 (a DAT file) which appears to contain all the "bar dialogue" for all the artifact quests. Changing anything in this file results in a game freeze when initiating a "map quest" for an artifact at the bar.

Oddly, using Notepad, I can open another DAT file called TEMPLATE. This file contains the correct Necromancer's AMULET "map quest" dialogue (along with other artifact dialogues, rumour dialogues, etc.), but this dialogue is not used. However, I am able to change the Necromancer's AMULET rumour dialogue into one about Necromancer's ROBES here and it shows up as "ROBES" in-game in the townsfolk rumours - so the rumour dialogue of this file at least IS used.

How do I get the game to reference the correct AMULET dialogue in the TEMPLATE file? Or, how do I correctly edit the dialogue in the ARTFACT1 file?

And bonus question! Game-play related. Are the racial "abilities" of Woodelves and Reguards properly implemented? I have a lvl 13 WE and a lvl 13 RG - both sorcerers, both with identical STR (58), AGI (100), and near identical other stats. I should be getting a +4 dmg to bows for the WE and a +4 dmg to melee for the RG at that lvl that should be making the WE kill faster with bows, and the RG kill faster with melee weapons, right?

What's happening is they are killing equally fast regardless of weapon (testing with a longbow and war-axe, as they have the same damage). and killing as fast as each other. I've tested for a long time, using orcs, minotaurs, ghouls, and zombies, as my "hit count" subjects. On average, both the WE and the RG take the same number of hits for each monster type regardless of weapon type. No 1/3 lvl bonus that I can see.

Do I need to be a higher level for the bonus to be "noticeable", or is this a "feature"? ;-)
