Remember The Oregon Trail? Reader Rabbit? Number Munchers? Mavis Beacon? Whatever happened to "Edutainment" as a genre? Used to be games designed to teach kids about the world seemed to be everywhere, and now they have largely vanished. I'm not talking about games like Civilization and Total War, where any knowledge gleaned is tertiary to the game design, but where education is the primary goal. I remember having this Discovery Channel disc back in the day that came with this awesome little Talking Planet character where you essentially went on a safari searching for rare wildlife. I loved it! Wish I could remember what it was. Or the Amazon Trail, which was my favorite game for the longest time.
What do you feel were the best Educational games of all time?
I'd go with (top 5):
1. The Oregon Trail
2. The Amazon Trail
3. Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
4. The Typing of the Dead
5. Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?
