Elder Scrolls Marriage vows

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 1:03 am

I never saw any details on how marriage is performed in the Elder Scrolls universe, so I came up with my own. I am posting them here for your enjoyment. Note that they are in the draft stage and will probably get edited and that it isn't the whole ceremony. Another thing I should point out is that these are Imperial vows. I might write some for the other cultures, though.

Priest:
By the labor of Zenithar
Who oversees the blacksmith's flame
By the mercy of Stendarr
Who the wrath of men does tame
By the wisdom of Julianos
Which keeps men from strife
By the circle of Arkay
Who guides men through life

By the sword of Talos
Who holds Tamriel's foes at bay
By the breath of Kynareth
Who even the fiercest storm can quell
By the beauty of Dibella
Who inspires the realm of art
By the love of Mara
Who touches man's heart
By the flames of Akatosh
Whose scales are brighter than the stars

Man:
I promse to love you for with all my heart
With you my soul rings true

[puts ring on woman's finger]

Woman:
And though you and I may be apart
My love remains with you

[puts wedding band on man's finger]

Priest:
You two are now bound in marriage sweet
As strong husband and as gentle wife
May you both a happy life lead
And may your days be bright

It's good, but I wonder if there could be a version for people of all creed. I don't think the Thalmor would aprove of the Talos line.

Aye pretty awesome friend. However, it would likely be different depending on the people being wed. The Nibanese for instance, their wedding bands are tattooed upon their fingers.

Skyrim http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLPie-IaaXE&feature=player_embedded. It's not as diverse, Divines-wise, as yours, but it does exist :)

edit: Ceremony starts around 1:57. The ending of the video...is not walking out of the temple and having rice thrown at the happy couple. XD

When the Nibenese get divorced, they skin their fingers and leave that as an offering to the ancestor moths. Liek a baws

Certainly nice vows! It's always fun to see such lore tidbits. It strikes me as more Colovian vows; who know what the Nibenese with their cults would cook up. While I was myself just working on describing the rites, it never struck me to come up with any vows, I'm hoping you do indeed write some more.

Thanks for the compliments. It's nice to know someone reads my writing. :celebration: I think I'll use the Skyrim vows for the fanfiction I am writing, though. Thanks for bringing them up. I didn't really know before that there was anything in-game.

it struck me as odd to find out that even the Argonians have a tradition of ring-giving, despite probably not having much access to metals. Maybe the rings were carved from bone?

I'm assuming this is in regards to how Nords would be wed in Skyrim. I'm sure Redguards, High Elves and especially the beast races have their own specific ways of getting married.

I really like it, but there should be some line in there that the priest says that references the woman too in the first or second verses.

I don't quite like the woman's verse:
And though you and I may be apart
My love remains with you

"be apart"? Sounds like she is divorcing him. Unless I'm interpreting it incorrectly.

The last verse the priest says is great!

Overall, it's very good but needs fine tuning I think. :)
