Elder Scrolls novels to be published

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:18 am

I read this press release and the first thing that came to mind when I saw Attrebus was our darling Moderator. :P
It doesn't really say how much longer after Oblivion it takes place. Maybe Martin Septim was sleeping with someone on the side? Maybe a Blades member up in cloudtop. We really just left him to his own devices while we ran errands for him.

You can't rely exclusively on previous writers for defining everything in TES though.

My point is, will this new writer know anything about lore? Will he make up province names etc?Y'know?

Why wouldn't Necrom have undead? Dunmer have been using undead as tomb guards for generations.

Can't even believe I'm responding to this nonsense, but, here we go.

There is a difference between:

City A: a normal city, one that is of great religious importance to a people. Like Rome, or Mecca. It has (for the basis of its fantasy setting) undead lurking around in the catacombs, or even wandering the streets, if you so desire. These are ancestral guardians per the religion of the people yadda yadda.

City B: a flying city, one that is populated by non-living inhabitants, who fly through the sky, cursing all living things that pass into their shadow.

Which one of these sounds like it makes sense? Hint: it's not City B.

Well, with Star Wars novels, I believe that there is a person named Leland Chee who basically keeps Star Wars lore consistent. Unfortunately, I don't think gamesas has any such authority on TES Lore. So I don't know how Bethesda will handle it, which will ultimately determine how it all works out.

We don't know enough about City B yet to make any real conclusions, I say it's best if we just wait and see.

We must pray to Akatosh... And hope a flying city doesn't kill us then reanimate us, simply for the purpose of being 'undead' :P

I'd be willing to bet that it becomes a community effort, with several of the developers reading the book's outline for major contradictions and then a second read of the prerelease copy for minor things.

I do believe I've already found several contradictions... :)

I've heard that the "Age of Unreason" series of novels is good. All we are saying, is give Keyes a chance.

(Sorry.)

Seriously, I think Ted Peterson respects Keyes' writing. I think I read that Keyes has done some research on TES also, so it's not as if he's completely unfamiliar with it.

If I were Bethesda, I wouldn't have attempted a series of novels, but we'll see I guess.

Yet it's consistent with TES Lore being woefully inconsistent. :P

And I hope Ebonheart exists. No, lets be fair. I hope Morrowind exists. And not 'Marawande' I try not to ask for much :)

Yeah, butthy don't live in houses and run shops, do they? A city that has them not a city solely inhabited by them.

I read this press release and the first thing that came to mind when I saw Attrebus was our darling Moderator. :P

Imagine if they gave him the same personality.

My point is, will this new writer know anything about lore? Will he make up province names etc?Y'know?
Don't even say that!

I hope their contradiction checking is better than it was for oblivion.

Most any plot or theme imaginable can be fit into TES lore/history if it's done correctly and with the right finesse. I suppose my biggest concern is not knowing how much this Keyes guy knows about TES, not just the lore and the history (which are both essential), but also the "style of presentation" (I'm not sure how to say it better).

The best TES novel, in my opinion, would be a series of stories about a certain event from several different perspectives, all connected through a commentator who's trying to figure out what really happened and getting it totally wrong.

So, this worries me, but I'll suspend judgment at this point. There's just not enough information to make an honest appraisal.

*sniff-sniff* What's that smell? ;)

I shall restrain myself from more malicious comments. Who knows, it could turn out good, but I am skeptical.

Very off-topic:
Good folks at Bethesda, PLEASE make us a nice, deep and addictive RPG. Books are nice, but I would prefer work from already established "Lore authors".
And make it soon :D

What really is the precedent for flying cities in TES?

Other than God-initiated ones.

It is up to an unlikely duo – a seventeen-year-old girl named Annaig and the Emperor's young son, Prince Attrebus – to rescue the kingdom from doom.

I wonder what kingdom is the young future Emperor is going to rescue. Did geography of Tamriel changed a lot between Oblivion crysis and Flying-Turning-People-Undead-Evil-City crysis? And how closely the story will resemble Oblivions MQ storyline?

Oh, and if the novell tries to follow the lore, then I'm sure that Manimarco is the mayor of the city, just to have a reference to the previous lore (evil, undead, lich king = Manimarco)

the core demographic (this forum)

This is inherently untrue. This book is all to do with 'video-game spin off book', for which there is an established market these days, and very little to do with anything else. Why else does its press release show up on the BethBlog and TES General, but not here?

eh? they made the lore to begin with, or atleast the old Beth gang did.

but anyway, its going to be some teen romance/the only guys that save the entire universe kind of books.
i would rather read a novel series about the Battle of Crygaine Field or the Daggerfall story line then something like this.

talk about milking.

whats next, TES the sit-com? TES the energydrink?

TES the energydrink?

They could rebrand redbull as Exclusive Restore Fatigue Potions and sell them in finely shaped glass ware for 175 gold each.

There were floating cities in the Forgotten Realms once. Didn't ever expect to see this stuff pop up in TES though.

It better not. Forgotten Realms and its crap should be kept out of TES at all cost. I am, however, open to any elements of Mystara...

When he said "this forum" I imagine he meant the BGSF in general, not just the lore forum.

I will not write yet another a priori negative reaction (I honestly feel like it, but I don't think anybody is actually interested in reading it.), but I would certainly like to indicate I have little to no hope for anything good coming out of this. Given the author's previous work, I'd be surprised if he would display anything close to the aesthetic judgment needed to properly write a book like this. (Even more so since Bethesda itself has failed in that department lately.)

All in all, it reeks of a rather embarrassing disrespect for Bethesda's own creation.
