Well, consider this..
Go to Bethesda's home page, Click the news link and just scan the headlines. Naturally, most of the news revolves around the new stuff like New Vegas. Oblivion is mentioned, but only in a topic that also talks about Fallout 3. Almost no topics about Elder Scrolls anything. Even Doom 2, a 1994 game, gets several news topics, but little Elder Scrolls anything. Doesn't mean a whole lot on it's own, but it does show they don't care toot their horn about it much anymore.
Then go to their "in development" page. The few games that are in development are very much action and shooter. The headline picture at the top is a guy with a bandanna that looks like teeth; basically art designed to appeal to young teens. Closest thing to a RPG is New Vegas. That's all. Years ago, the "in development" page was filled with other rpg or adventure games that they claimed were "in depth" and were making alongside the TES series. Things like Redguard, Battlespire, Sea Dogs, etc.
It just simply seems that someone important in either Bethesda or ZeniMax thinks that "cool looking" action games are the real way to go. A guy in medieval armor holding a sword would look out of place among all the things they're doing now. Just saying that it indicates the direction that Bethesda is thinking currently. Bethesda was never 100% about the adventure/RPG category, but they're far less about it now than they ever were.
They're not going to just drop the TES series. That would be bad business, indeed. That was their flagship franchise for a long time. It's what put them on the map. Todd might put it on the shelf for a time and stay open to people's ideas, but they won't just flat-out drop it.
What they could do, however, is have a separate game studio make TES 5. It would give them room to work on all the action and shooter titles they're wanting to do. As it is, this delay might even just be them ironing out the details with some game studio. Again, who knows. It's all just speculation in the wind.
They could also be wanting to make Fallout their franchise RPG and hold off on TES. Games are hard to make and Fallout 3 was a big success after all. No big flame wars or heated debates came about as a result of Fallout 3, certainly not like it did with the previous two TES titles. That's a very big thing I can guarantee you.
