An Elder Scrolls D&D

The Elder Scrolls universe has attained enough lore and life in it that I am honestly amazed there has yet to be a creation of an Elder Scrolls based D&D type campaing or rpg system. I personally would love to see such a game made, as would quite a few people I know. I already know some people make their own campaing sets using a modified version of character sheets just to even try to make such an rpg posible between them and their friends, but why should it be limited to such? I figure why not ask the community their opinion on this matter. So go on, give your opinions to this topic. I would love to see how many others are interested.

Well, anyone could do it with the basic D&D ruleset. All you need to know is how to create your own campaigns.

Ken Rolston, a former Bethesda developer as well as a renowned developer of PnP RPGs actually ran a PnP Elder Scrolls game; unfortunately none of the documentation he made has ever been released.

There have been many fan attempts to translate the Elder Scrolls to PnP. Some have been pretty ambitious attempts to bring the entire TES role playing system to PnP but most simply merge TES lore with an established rule set.

I'm actually working on a mash-up between D20 and SPECIAL around an Elder Scrolls framework, as it happens to be - check further down the page, it should still be around the middle or bottom third. There's some other dude, Dong Zhou or something, who says he's working on a D20 system as well but the last update to that's been about six months ago, and Red Eye down in the Fan Works directory is basically ripping the mechanics straight out of Morrowind for use as a tabletop system, which frankly I think is doomed to fail and fail badly by virtue of rule and mechanic overload.

Aye, that's what I did around 4 years ago. I used Warhammer Fantasy's ruleset, a mixture of Warhammer and D&D's items, and used Warhammer's spells but changed some names to fit the Elder Scrolls universe.
It wasn't that long to do. :)

D&D is still a guilty pleasure of mine. Unfortunately, there's nobody around to play it with anymore. I still have all the books. Sometimes I still flip through them and think back to the old days.

Yeah, there aren't many people who play DND any more these days. Years ago it was quite popular and it brought forth quite a few games too (Eye of the Beholder series or Unlimited Adventures are just a few examples.). I still have 2nd edition books though :P

I've sometimes thought about PnP TES based on the RQ system . Adapting an existing system for TES style characters isn't too hard. The work is in converting the magic system, creatures, and the material-based weapons and armour of TES in a way that keeps the flavour.

There is one finished (and one abandoned) Elder Scrolls based PnP RPG, it uses author's mechanics/system, though it's in Polish language. The finished one is a 165 page pdf.

Licensing issues aside, I'd say lack of coordination. I've seen dozens of people talk about this sort of thing. If they'd get together and work on it in as a community, I think it could go a long way.

Who knows, maybe if the Dragon Age pen&paper game sells well enough, Bethesda will follow and release one for ES:V. Outside of the number crunching, all they'd need to do is release a player's handbook or whatever with background information (geography, history, politics etc) relevant to Elder Scrolls 5's province, and there you have it. Plus. dedicated fans with access to the lore could craft campaigns outside of the province with no effort.

Wishful thinking, but you never know. Bioware probably only did it because they're famous for making D&D-based videogames.

I still have most of my books and figures. It would be impossible for me to play D&D as an advlt with a job and responsibilities, though, especially without friends who'll consistenly play it with me. One of my former D&D buddies lives 200 miles away, for instance.

I'm actually okay with this, though. Bethesda/TES is a damn-good substitute for D&D, so far as basic looting and combat goes. IT's all the other stuff in D&D that's missing from Oblivion that I miss. The hundreds (thousands?) of odd creatures, underwater and aerial combat, rules for dozens of miscellaneous things...saving throws, etc.

I'm constantly comparing D&D to Oblivion, which isn't fair, really, but I can't help it. :(

Using D&D first edition as a template then using Daggerfall's character generator system (Custom Class) you could certainly have an effective ES table top game....

For instance: The special advantages or disadvantages could create a strong backstory.

Also the background questions could also help with bonus'.


I'd love to see an ES table top game. D&D runs strongly through my family but I am the only one who also plays the ES series......
