If Elder Scrolls V was an MMO Would you still Play it?

Post » Fri Aug 06, 2010 5:04 am

I would indeed play it if it were a MMO. However the freedom of play would have to be altered to the point that it wouldnt be a true ES game.
I also feel that a co-op game would be a better fit. I would love to maybe have up to 4 people that I can play the game with in the same realm. I think it would be an easier port from single player to co-op because in a co-op game you dont need to lock down the game to the same point you would with an MMO. At least in a co-op game you can boot a player if they do something stupid. In an MMO you have to prevent the stupid from happening in the first place which makes it much harder.

I really don't understand all the hate for an ES MMO. I mean, sure, they're usually just tedious husks of fetch quests combined with people looking to cyb3r, but if Bethesda were to actually produce (or at least control the strings behind its production) the game, then I would expect something a little better than, say, perfect world. Honestly, so many people are saying they wouldn't even give it a chance- why is this? I would at least try it. It's Elder Scrolls for gods sake!

I agree with you.

I believe what others are saying is that for Beth to produce an MMO they would have to take away so much of what makes ES what it is. Things like a world in which if you wanted, you could kill everyone in a city. To do this type of thing in an MMO you couldnt have that. If one player killed everyone in a city then that might make quests that relate to that city unable to complete. I like the MMO style of game and would love for the ES series to have a little more of a social aspect. Playing in single player mode is great but eventually you want someone else to join in the world and work with you, or even against you.

I can see where people that say they wont play it if its an MMO are coming from but I like both styles of games and either way Beth makes it (which most likely wont even be an MMO) I would like to play it.

Maybe but probably not. I want it to remain RPG, so many bad things can happen with MMOs.

a multiplayer element might be nice, but i really hope they don't do an mmo, i dont want to have to keep paying every month to play an elder scrolls, i love them just they way they are. i dont rely to much on graphics for my rating of a game, but ive never seen good graphics on an mmo, and i've never seen a first person mmo which makes me all the more resistant to an mmo ES because i love playing in the first person so personally this is what i think of a mmo ES :flamethrower: :brokencomputer:

May have something to do with playing games to get 'away' from people rather than 'hang out' with them. :)

I wouldn't like that it was an MMO but I'd probably give it a shot, I guess.

It could work, but they would have to fundamentaly change the game in some classic areas.

1. For starters, it wouldn't look nearly as good as a fully made single-player TES5.

2. They would have to seperate the skill system into chunks, there's now way they would leave an empty pool to pick anything. Who would ever chose the RP skills over Combat skills if they wanted to stay competitive?

3.Total Skill caps would be needed, or everyone will be max every skill and basically be the same class. Jack of All Trades x10.

4.Can't kill NPC's. Boo.

5. One of the benefits, they would have to add alot of more abilities for melee. The usual ~4 static moves, neither of which help close the ranged-gap, are unacceptable for an mmo. (I hope they do this for TES5 whether sp or mmo)

6. Same as above, but for Archery. MMO crowd loves their 1million abilities.

There's only room for one monthly-subscription-type MMO in my life and for now that's WoW. Perhaps though Zenimax has a different model in mind for the MMO they're working on which may or may not be an Elder Scrolls title. The TES universe might translate well into an MMO, but MMOs require balance to a degree than I think really conflicts with the TES ethos of doing what you want to do. Where having classes that are easier/harder and more/less powerful adds depth to a single-player game no one wants to be gimped in a competitive game, and I find a non-competitive MMO impossible to imagine.

I've only ever played Guild Wars, which I guess is an MMO, :dunno:

But IIRC, GW had towns/outposts that players could congregate and trade in, while the "outside" areas were instanced or something for 1-? players that were in your group (that you formed in-town).

The way that Oblivion handled towns and dungeons as separate regions, makes me think that you could at least make a comparison or get an idea of how an ES MMO might work. I guess?

Well it all depends. Would it be like WoW and pay for, then I would say NO! If it's like Guild Wars and free to play, I would say YES!

I'd play it. I don't see a reason not to at least give it a try, since all MMOs release with a free trial period. If you don't like it then, fine, but its unfair to completely oppose a project based solely because it might svck.

A resounding "No". I would refuse to play a TES MMO. It would forever taint a fantasy setting I've come to know and love.

If TESV were an MMO, I would end my involvement with future iterations in the series then and there. Hell, I would probably be pissed if they released an MMO that was just a minor spin-off. I don't want lore happening in a game that I don't want to play. I actively hope Bethesda never creates an MMO, for me, or even for people who would enjoy it.

Care to explain why, perchance? I really want to know, because I really don't understand it.

I'm going to assume that you did not play any of the TES Travels series, but you do not seem to object to the lore development therein (little as there was), nor do you abandon the genre because they exist. How would an MMO be any different? You could avoid it, and if you really, really hated what it did to lore (note: MMOs are not by their nature some sort of anti-lore) you could just ignore it, like many people do with the lore of other TES titles.

I love RPG's partially because they're single player. I also enjoy TES a lot because of the mods. Downloading new ones is almost as fun as playing them :celebration:
I've also never enjoyed and MMO for that long before. LOTRO and WoW each lasted me about two months. I enjoyed the social interaction and exploring, but was just dragged down by the gameplay. While I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2, not only does any MMO have to work very hard to convince me that it might be worthwhile; but that does double, or probably triple if it has a monthly fee.

You make many good points.

My point, however, is that I don't want to ignore TES lore. I want to immerse myself in it. I don't want to play an MMO. Therefore, I want to experience the lore in a game I'd enjoy playing. A MMO would not satisfy that desire. In all honesty, my reasoning is purely selfish. I understand that there are many people who would love to explore Tamriel with their friends and rivals. I'm not one of them, and I (quite selfishly) hope that TESV comes as close to my personal expectations of it as possible. That may not be realistic, but it's how I feel.

I generally don't like MMOs. Grinding and the like are things I abhor and really don't seem fun to me. I've played MMOs before (WoW and runescape), but lost interest rather quick. I like to play on my own schedule, so paying per month seems unfair if I can't play for two weeks because I'm busy with other things.

No, because I do not want to be walking around a town,a dn just be annoyed constantly by morons with names "xX1337manXx" or anything equally stupid.
And then they would type like a freaking idiot who has no grasp on language at all. And just constantly spam racial messages, happened on every MMO i've tried, and it would be no different because it is Elder Scrolls, the MMO Kiddies would still hassle their parents for the fee.
EDIT: And the fact that Modding would not be possible is pretty much reason enough for it to never happen.

Lotta new MMO's coming out soon. Guild Wars 2, Everquest 3, the Old Republic, new WoW stuff all the time. A TES MMO would have to top that for me to play it.

I would be very tempted to play it, but after the lake rumare quest in oblivion I already felt like the argonian IMLEET and the big nord rolf the uber were the one thing missing from the quest before I prematurely quit it.

Plus after watching Darkfalls forums with all the discussion about before the games development finished and the type of game play the casual gamer wants I'd become very disinterested with the game quickly.

I would definitely play Elder Scrolls Online as long as they would still make the single player RPG's. Myself and many of my friends have talked about how incredibly awesome it would be if that happened.
