Elemental Magicka II

1. Description:

Some of you may recall the mod I worked on, "Elemental Magicka." It was a good learning experience, and allowed me to familiarize myself with basic Morrowind scripting techniques. It certainly had its flaws, some worse than others, and I found by the end of it that I'd created something I wouldn't play with myself. I started over from scratch on "Elemental Magicka II" to create something to fix such issues.

This is an ongoing project that I plan to keep developing over time, though it may be slow-going for certain intervals, such as the past few months. I'm hoping to help things along by splitting up the work into smaller themed modules -- the first of which was released in January as "Of Fire and Frost." Today, in celebration of Morrowind's 10th anniversary, I am releasing an additional module "Of Earth and Air." I hope you all enjoy playing with these as much as I did creating them.

2. Installation:

This mod requires Morrowind GOTY edition, and MGE or MWSE for the optional MWSE addon. Copy the contents of this archive into your Morrowind Data Files folder.

Use the following load order:
Elemental Magicka II.esp
Elemental Magicka II - Of Fire and Frost.esp
Elemental Magicka II - Of Earth and Air.esp
Elemental Magicka II - MWSE Addon.esp

The first plugin is the master that contains all of my scripts and methods, while the second and third place spellbooks into the world in particular locations. The optional MWSE addon allows NPCs to become hostile when attacked by these spells.

3. Playing the mod:

Install as outlined above, and keep an eye out in-game for the spellbooks introduced!

In this first module, the following spells are included:
Spoiler
Circle of Fire
Circle of Frost
Circle of Lightning
Flame Nova
Frost Nova
Lightning Nova
Flame Blast
Frost Blast
Lightning Blast
Meteor Shower
Encasing Ice
Tempest

In the second module, the following spells are included:
Spoiler
Circle of Wind
Circle of Stones
Air Blast
Air Nova
Earth Blast
Earth Nova
______________________________________________________

4. Issues:

Currently the MWSE addon allows NPCs to become hostile when attacked by spells, but this doesn't trigger guards to come to their aid. I'd like to fix this eventually.

5. Credits:

- Special thanks to abot, without whom I would never have fixed some CTD-inducing script oversights back in Elemental Magicka 1.0.
- Hrnchamd for patching PlaceAtPC.
- Mireneye / Jac for the "Real Lightning" resource
- rocker / Lady E. for the "New Elemental Damage Effects" resource
- Arcimaestro Anteres, for donating a nice sphere mesh for me to use.
- Dirnae, for the animated Encasing Ice mesh.
- John_Moonsugar, for tes3cmd
- Illuminiel, for the "readme" format.
- Everyone who has given input or feedback since the original inception of this project.

6. Usage:

My work in this mod (any scripts / methods) may be modified or reused in any manner without contacting me, however, feel free to ask technical questions about usage of the scripts. For permission to reuse/modify any models or textures, see the original resource authors as listed above.

Oooh goody.

I hadn't gotten around to collecting the spells in the first version but it was on my to do list. Now I've got even more of a reason to dust off my 32nd level arch mage, get him out of his tower and onto is dragon for some good old treasure hunting :D

Thank you.

Thanks everyone, I hope that the new spells are as fun to play as they were to create. I added a preview video to the thread later last night, and the PES download link is now live. Enjoy!

Just a small bump. Anyone given this a try in-game and found any of the spells? They're quite scattered (and meant to be so) but the aspiring mage might just find some anyway! Any bugs to report?

I've been taking a break in the time since releasing this but have some plans for Volume II - Thu'um.

Haven′t tried em yet.
Is my char skilled enough to cast them?

You should be plenty powerful to use these given your Destruction skill, however you'll find they eat up your mana pool quickly, I think.

*push* Can you give me a little hint as to where you put em? Lying around in ruins/tombs/shrines? Places you visit during the mainquest? Because so far I′ve had no luck.

Edit: Ok I′ve found Circle of Lightning and Frost Nova so far. However, I stupidly deleted Frost Nova from my Spellbook -.- Can you tell me a console command to add it again?
Circle of Lightning seems cool, but a little weak.

If you accidentally deleted a spell from your inventory, can you try dropping the spellbook for that spell and picking it back up again?

As for the rest of the spells, I can give a cell list if you'd like, but (at least for me) the fun is in just having them be part of the game world to discover naturally. Though some may be obscure or difficult to see. For instance, I thought I saw something in Vivec near the palace, but I just can't recall where...

Wow, your video sold me. :) I agree that it will be fin to stumble upon them, but I'm at the point in Morrowind where I've been playing for ten years, so I've been looking up the things I missed. Eventually, after using this mod for a while, it might be nice to have a cell list so one could see if they missed anything. Going to DL this now - thanks!!

You know the sort of loot in Morrowind where you could walk by a location a hundred times and never notice that scroll tucked away in the corner? That's exactly the feel I'm going for with this as I find it all the more rewarding when you happen upon one. That said, Morrowind is a big place, to make an understatement. I'll edit the original post later with a cell list but even that won't make them obvious I think!

I have decided to give Morrowind Nexus a try, and have uploaded this mod there, too. Original post has been edited with this link:

I have been very busy at work the past several months and haven't had the creative energy to work on this, unfortunately. I have some plans laid out for additional modules, though -- I'm hoping to resume development soon!

I've updated the thread to reflect the update released today... the module "Of Earth and Air." Sadly, I did not create anything original today, but instead chose to polish up a set of six Earth / Air spells into an update. I'm arbitrarily calling this version 1.1, which includes everything from the first module as well as my update.

Note that there will be a new base "Elemental Magicka II.esp" file which will overwrite your old one if you've used this mod previously. As long as your load order is as indicated things should be fine.

YouTube preview for the new spells: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z11v6erxYoE

Added in this module:

Air Blast
Air Nova
Circle of Stones
Circle of Wind
Earth Blast
Earth Nova

Happy Birthday, old friend.

Thanks, I'll be trying to think up some new ideas to keep fleshing this out. And, as always, suggestions are welcome -- my biggest limitation is always in securing meshes/textures to use as I'm not an artist or animator, but I've got some pretty flexible scripts at this point.
