Rimmen

Though ostensibly its own kingdom, Rimmen still pays tribute to the Mane of Elsweyr, from whose realm it seceded in CE812 during the Interregnum. Earlier, Akaviri refugees had fled persecution when the warlord Attrebus briefly aspired to the Imperial Throne. Attrebus, though he lasted no longer than most of the pretender kings of that period, thought he might rid Cyrodiil of the foreigners who had ruled it for the first half of the Common Era, and he drove the Akaviris past the Empire's borders into Elsweyr. The khajiit granted them asylum in the hills and steppes of northwestern Elsweyr, where they dwelt in relative seclusion until remnants of the Dir-Kamal resurfaced in Cyrodiil, seizing the Throne from Attrebus' successors. The Rimmen (literally, the "Rim Men," as the khajiit called them) joined their brothers to try to rebuild the Empire. This effort was doomed to failure, but not before the khajiit attempted to reclaim their lands in a series of bloody border wars. Currently, since the ascension of Tiber Septim, the hapless Rimmen have once again submitted to the protection of the Mane, with a renewed tribute paying for the Cat Lord's guarantee of their independence, a truly weak reed upon which to lean.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Fan_Interview_III

34. The Pocket Guide to the Empire (and its environs) mentions that Cyrodil has some colonies of "true Akaviri", and people with Akiviri facial traits and last names. Will this lore be present in any form in the game?

The vagaries of Akaviri culture have been all but completely absorbed into the cosmopolitan social structure of Cyrodiil. Holding out hope for some kind of remote pool of "true Akaviris" was perhaps simply wishful thinking on the part of the author of the initial Pocket Guide. A new version is being composed to correct his mistakes and exaggerations.

Quoting a http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1061217&st=149 ;) out of Greg Keyes book http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Infernal_City.

Rimmen has elegant bones of ivory-colored stone with few towers but many domes. Soldiers- human soldiers- met them at the gate... For another hundred yards they snaked through the twists and turns of an entry overlooked by platforms for archers, mages, and siege weapons. that brought them to the market, a bustling, colorful plaza empty in the middle but girdled by tents and stalls and bounded by canols. A broad avenue flanked by even more expansive waterways continued on to what was clearly the palace, an ancient-looking structure raised up on a high, tiered substructure. the tiers held some buildings, and apparently earth, because he[Attrebus] could see trees growing there. Surmounting that was a cylindrical building with a large golden dome. Water cascaded down the sides of the palace, feeding the pool that encircled it.

Attrebus wondered where all the water came from.

Off to the eastern side of the palace, he could see the odd curly-edged roof of what had to be the Akaviri temple ... The only place ... with similar architecture was Cloud Ruler Temple...
...

He was surprised to see that fewer than half of the people were Khajiit, and many of those lolled about with wild or vacant eyes, skooma pipes clutched in their hands. ...

They left the plaza, crossing a canol on a footbridge and thence down a narrow street where gently chiming bells were depended between the flat roofs of the buildings and viridian moths flittered in the shadows. the addicts were even thicker here, a few watching them and holding out their hands for money; but most were shivering, lost in their visions.

They arrived at their destinations, a smaller square with a fortified building surrounded by guards in purple surcoats and red sashes.

Read over the text of the entry post: is there any resource with "gently chiming bells" we can "depend between the flat roofs" of the lower class houses?

Another thread already? Wow, we're really moving fast through threads here! :P

As for bells, I think I've seen bell resources on tesnexus. You could probably just shrink those bells and use them, if you can find them.

I would prefer not to have another task on my endless list :P. Besides that, when I asked Google for 'chiming bells', first hit was a flower. Think there are similar flowers among the existing meshes; they would be a perfect base, 'only' need a golden texture and a good soundfile.

Here some decision for all of you: what do you think about this 'mutant' of mr_siika's house: http://www3.pic-upload.de/24.06.10/5lp7l8anhftx.jpg? Need's a lot more work of course, but I'm not sure if I should continue with that.

Edit: if you don't like it, you have to tell me how else I can add domes into Rimmen :P.

The domes on the side parts of the house look really good! The huge middle dome looks like it's just sitting on top though... You could probably just take off the middle dome, and it would be perfect.

Also, I was thinking of placing a small dungeon connected to one of the UC houses. A sort of "ancient bunker" thing, that the akaviri refugees used during their multiple "border wars" with the Khajiit.
I just want an excuse to use this awesome-looking dungeon resource:
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23633

Oh! I almost forgot! For a good sound file for bells, there's this:

And for golden textures:

I agree with Norinvaux that the side-domes look good (of course you're aware of the slight gaps between roof edge and building below, how rude of me to point these out). The central dome doesn't quite work as it appears right now. It doesn't look like it's truly attached, merely resting on top (as Norinvaux said). So the flange needs some adjusting to better connect with the main roof. I'm also thinking that maybe the central dome should have slightly darker-textured tiles?

Just a sketch currently, and of course all domes need to be better 'attached' to the building. The textures differ in tile size, and vector shading is different too, yes. Sharp eyes around here :P.

I started with the small domes on the side parts first, but it didn't look good, believe me ;). What's even worse: can't see how to bring in domes to any of the other houses. The domes look really weird with that 'sharp' roofs of the other houses.

i like ti auryga! i would love to see some domes incorparated into the lower class homes though...

That's weird. My first answers was: "no, novel says '... between the flat roofs of the buildings ...', so lower class houses don't have domes".

But actually it's not said that they pass through a lower class part of Rimmen. Only 'the addicts were even thicker here'. They are near the State Store, were the moon sugar is sold, so this could also be the reason for more addicts. And why would the State Store be in the lower class part of town?

Comming back to the domes: 'Rimmen has elegant bones of ivory-colored stone with few towers but many domes'. Towers and domes, but not 'houses with domes'. And they are outside Rimmen, or just entering it. Are the domes part of the wall?
'For another hundred yards they snaked through the twists and turns of an entry overlooked by platforms ' could also describe the outer defenses of the city. Japanese castles have such 'twists and turns' on the way to their main buildings, with lots of arrow slits overlooking the small path upward.

Should I simply place the dome roofs on top of the platforms around the wall? With some ivory-colored stone colums below them as 'bones'?

Discussion, please.

And please tell me that this is the perfect solution, exactly matching the novel ... just because it would be very easy to do it this way :P.

well the squarish ones would be perfect for it, but im not sure how you would attach domes to the circular ones.

I think you could probably add in more walls in front of rimmen, lengthening the city, and making room for a fancy entranceway, with towers and domes all around, leading into the city. Sort of like this:

Right, gonna use the 'round' ones for sort of pedestals/shrines in the city.

Here's a very quick and rough first http://www3.pic-upload.de/25.06.10/i19ryzmjqmo.jpg: I really like it, not only because it's so easy. Akaviri version of the http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/25023-1-1244643870.jpg, somehow.

Not shown on this test shot: I changed the grey stone of the wall texture to an 'ivory' colored one. Looks quite good for a single wall, gonna see how the whole city wall looks in that texture when I'm back home.

Agree, and here's the new http://www.jcastle.info/photos/view/1232-Himeji-Castle. Ok, may be a bit wishfull thinking :P.

Edit: what I remembered and really was looking for was this http://www.jcastle.info/photos/view/145-Azuchi-Castle.

What about a cheap version? Like the entrance to Kvatch, those wooden barrikades. Novel is 50 years ahead, so may be the stone defenses and platforms are not build yet, or just partly started. And remember, there are 3 gates to do, not only the southern one ...

I love the building roofs.

Hopefully you love the platform towers too ;).

I do know this for sure myself, at home I most often get only half of the picture until it 'dies on starvation'. Try one of this ways to get the pictures: right click and download it, or use another browser. That's what helps me. I use IE 8 and Firefox alternatley, none of them works always, but most often one of them gets it if the other one has a problem.

Just finished the http://www3.pic-upload.de/27.06.10/97wiyuslvwzn.jpg and some are already broken again ;). Stairs (nearly) all around the walls, soon it will be possible to walk around the city on top of them.

Sorry for the bad quality of the pic, but only dialup line today :P.

And hey, would these, by any chance, fit in with lore? I think they look awesome, but I'm just worried they wouldn't fit in; http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=32610
