Embarrassing Todd Howard interviews...

Post » Fri Nov 06, 2009 12:56 pm

Why is it that every time a game journalist can corner Todd Howard they spend the entire interview talking about dragons?

I've seen this in just about every high-profile interview, most recently with Geoff Keily and Adam Sessler, where instead of asking questions of any substance like "How have you fixed level scaling?" or "How will the races differentiate themselves?", they decide to let slip gems like "Will you be able to play as a dragon?". That one goes to Geoff of Gametrailers TV, by the way. It was shortly followed by Geoff voicing his desire for Skyrim to have a "Dragon Mode", where you get to "play as a dragon". Ugh...

Look, dragons are cool, and anyone familiar with the lore of Tamriel knows that dragons are a remarkable occurance in the world. Their reammurgance sets the stage for what could possibly be the most chaotic period of Tamrielic history. That being said, all the game journalists see is a buzzword to latch onto. Why are none of them asking "real" questions?

I imagine poor Todd is getting fed up with talking about dragons for 90% of the interviews he's in. Maybe wishes he didn't include them at all.

I don't know. Considering they set aside a team to work exclusively on the dragons...I have a feeling they are just as psyched about including them.

Because Geoff and the likes of him are asking questions that your average Joe gamer may not know. Believe it or not, some people are not even aware that a new ES game is coming out. Geoff is not interviewing for the more hardcoe fans like us.

We need to do an Operation: Happy Howard, where we send him cards and drawings of a dragon (and the people that want to play as them) be devistated and ahniliated.

Wait, I thought when I entered this topic that it was about Todd having a bad interview but it's the opposite

I agree that it's embarassing I mean the German interview got us more info then a whole bunch of other interviews that were done.

Playing as a dragon might not be so terrible, provided it is done well. If it were to be in the game at all, I would put it in a boxed-in, one time only, save disabled scenario. Maybe a dream sequence or for the final battle only. In any case, an isolated singular event that cannot be repeated.

I completely disagree. Dragons will be one of the main selling points of this game. If BGS can effectively create the most visually-pleasing and horrific dragon encounters in gaming history, this game has just struck lightning for a lot of folks. While hearing the same confirmation may not be relevant to use hardcoe TES fans, it is pivotal to a lot of newcomers and the continual success of TES. Dragons in games such as Dragon Age 2 and The Witcher 2 won't even come close to being as intense and epic as those in Skyrim, and that is what will truly allow BGS to set the bar higher than everyone else, as they always strive for.

If you want to play as a dragon, play Divinity II.
If you want to kill some dragons, play Skyrim! (You kill dragons in Skyrim right?)

I've read/heard this argument before but i'm not too sure.
Do you think the average joe bothers to watch a show like his? And do you believe his rather pedestrian questions, not to mention his manners, will actually sparkle the interest of the average joe?

Nah.
He's just being himself.

Yeah.
They were just big enemies, nothing more, maybe something less.

I think the most embarrassing Todd Howard interview would probably have been the first one where someone said "You were in the chess club!" and Todd was probably like

He's basically interviewing for the people that are less informed, A.K.A people that get outside more ;)

And yes, some average gamer joes will watch video game T.V. Shows (G4) or find a random link online.

If interviewers asked questions like "How are you going to make dragon encounters specifically memorable?" or "What sets TES dragons apart from the tired fantasy cliche?", I'd agree with you. As things are, Howard is having to entertain dimwits asking about how big they are, or how awesome their fire breath will be.

*Ahem*

"Will we be able to ride dragons as an epic mount?"

This. It's also a bit naive to think these interviews are unrehearsed, and the dragon questions just pop up, without Todd's blessing. Todd's been about dragonzarereturning!zomg1mxpl0dng!!! since January. Is it wrong they're as excited for dragons as he's been?

That was my point too. The average gamer is probably playing cod with his frat boys. The average gamer wont even buy skyrim untill 4 or 5 months after release. They should really gear the interview twards the people who they are going to make the first impression on and who are swayed by the litle things

It's not a bad question in general, really. Although a bit hilarious I admit...

In Oblivion the dragonborn became a dragon... Akatosh. So it's not a horrible question to ask if we as a dragonborn in Skyrim might turn into a dragon as well.
