Emos, what is it EXACTLY ?

Post » Thu Jun 10, 2010 9:31 am

Hold on a second there, how exactly is it "ridonkulous" that someone would cut themselves over family problems? Cutting isn't meant to help oneself, it's a coping mechanism that depressed people use to release serotonin into the brain. I would be more likely to believe these people have real problems, and were drawn to the emo subculture, rather than the other way around. Anyone who cuts has real issues, no matter the reason.

These girls go to a private school with very wealthy parents and everything they could ever want. If they have family problems I will eat my Fallout 3 bobblehead.

These girls cut because it's fashionable, simple as that. I'm not being a snarky [censored] or anything like that, but they're posers. That's the only word to describe what they're doing to themselves. Posing.

Nice to see someone here who looks at it from both sides. By reading through this topic, it seems 90% of the people are biased about emo's.

I am SO glad I was never allowed to leave the house looking like a idiot.

My parents stopped me from making stupid choices, and I am so glad they did. Well until I was 18 that is, from then on I was allowed to make my own stupid choices.
They also explained to me why it was a bad choice.

aren't you the guy who likes to dress up like a medeival knight? Buys swords, bows, etc? You're not any 'better' them.

I find that a little hard to believe. Just because someone is wealthy, doesn't automatically make them happy. They could easily have distant, workaholic parents, that don't really care about them. The family could be in debt, and the stress could be tearing the family apart. Hell, the parents could just be bitter at each other and want a divorce. Unless you live there, or are very close friends to these people, you really don't know whats going on in their lives. People don't just up and decide to be self destructive and depressed, it just doesn't work that way.'

I have yet to meet a "true emo". Most of the people who would fit into the "emo" bracket are scene. And they are always very friendly people. I still make fun of them right to there face, we all get a good laugh, then go get burgers.

Mmmm....burgers....

No, I am not any better than them, But you don't see me running around town in my collection now do you? well once, on Halloween.

Most of these "emo" kids look like they crawled out of a trash can and the clothes they wear come from said can. yeah i might have wearable helms and chain, but I don't go around whining about how no one understands me and shooting my self with my bow.

my normal attire is a company provided uniform, with T-shirts and jeans when I am off work.

Whats wrong with owning swords and bows? I use my bow and swords are popular show peaces. I never said I was dressed like them, I just never go out in public looking like a tool.

The problem I see with the bolded statement is that it's biased. You're talking from the emo-side of the fence, insinuating that the other side does not in-fact think their own way, when they do just as much as the emos who don't think their own way by blending into the emo subculture (e.g. by being "different", they're the same). In other words, emos aren't any more "unique-thinking" than non-emos.

The thing with the italics, again. You're looking at one side of the fence. I've met some mainstream jocks who're the stereotypical meathead, yet have a 4.5+ GPA and are a LOT more interested in this ages social "issues" than the kids sitting around them.

I'm not anti-emo or pro-"mainstream", I have emo friends, I have "mainstream" friends; I've dated emos, I've dated "mainstream". Nothing wrong with either. I just think you gotta look at it from both sides of the fence; you gotta have friends on both sides, you gotta have, in the past, played as both sides (Meaning you can't be sitting on one side as you compare the two, perspective gets funny then.)

I was going to say something something like you said, about how Emo's say there individuals but then dress the same as there friends there no different then the other social groups, except the Emo's either won't admit it or don't realize it. Some of my friends are Emo's and in fact when I first meet them I liked the few emo's better then the others and they're not whinny but they were kind of annoying  I still talk to them every once in awhile but were not really friends like we use to be.

I don't want to offend anyone, but it's difficult with this choice of words: pathetic and weak... that's basically what I feel about them.

And you think they have problems..?

I know a few girls who have cut themselves simply because they want to be "emo". They blame it on family problems and crap like that but it's ridonkulous, cutting yourself helps nobody. Emo's are a waste of skin and space.

You clearly have no idea...

Whether or not you look like "a tool" is a matter of opinion. Saying one way of looking is "wrong" compared to another just makes you ignorant and rude.

Oh how I abhor that term. What makes them a tool and you not? You're judging them based on how they look and that makes them bad? Oh please. You want people to judge YOU like that too? Because I have to admit, you're looking a lot like an ass right now. :sadvaultboy:

And you'll find the same people in ever other subculture. Everybody wants to think they're different, some of then just stick to their guns a lot harder than others in their uniqueness defense. It's a good thing because it shows pride and confidence, but also a bad thing because it shows TOO much pride and confidence. :P

I had a friend who knew people who cut themselves, apparently it is some kind of release fir them or something, whatever it helps them, and the cuts arent deep enough to cause harm.

I find this thread funny, emos say no one understands them blah blah blah, yet it seems like they are pretty spot on with some of the comments here.

As it has probably been mentioned people are pretty hurtful on the internetz and will label people as emotionals or "emos" as some like to phrase it. The actual definition of an "emo" will vary from person to person, but for the really nasty A-Holes out there an emo is anyone that brings up a complaint against anything which may include a legitimate complaint. Sadly this can really degrade into flames wars where people will just start going after people calling them emo, *insert R word* emo, morons, idiots, etc... . Only real way to deal with people who start throwing out the word "Emo" is just to ignore them, but since it's your daughter OP it maybe best to talk to her just having a conversation. See if someone is bothering her on a forum page, if this is progressing to the point of Harassment, etc... . If a person is indeed harassing your daughter by constantly sending messages to her it maybe best to see who started this fight and try to end it.

It's hard to determine who started things, but if another person/forum goer started it you may want to alert a forum moderator if you feel it is necessary so you can end things. Sadly i'm starting to see a trend where simple name calling gets out of hand and taken online where people start calling others hurtful things with one being an "Emo".

Anyways just my personal thoughts on things can only offer up my opinions on this matter and not straight advice since i'm not a parent.

I will have to dig it up, but I swear I read some article that says some girls cut themselves because it releases some kind of endorphins or some natural high to relieve stress.

Yes because he decided to class herself as emo from being harrased, she cant find that culture appealing at all  Dont know why emo = bad, Ok I think the music is bad, and guys with emo fringes look like idiots, but that dosent mean emos are bad, I know one emo girl, maybe she was scene, I cant really seperate the two, she was a great person, I know another emo he was an [censored]. You cant just associate it with bad things, like I said for what ever reason they may like it, thus may classify themselves as emo. I dont know why people are so negative about emos.

@PredatorX I assume its both genders not just girls.

i never said it was wrong, i just think it looks utterly stupid to go out dressed like that. They dress like that to be non-conformist yet conform to dressing like that? And it makes them stick out like a sore thumb to boot.

Oh how I abhor that term. What makes them a tool and you not? You're judging them based on how they look and that makes them bad? Oh please. You want people to judge YOU like that too? Because I have to admit, you're looking a lot like an ass right now. :sadvaultboy:

because i blend in and don't stick out like a sore thumb, those clothes shout "LOOK AT ME I WANT ATTENTION!!!!!!eleven!!!" Ill pass. 5% of people may think i look like a fool, but the other 95% thinks those 5% look like the fool.

People will judge me no matter what, so it doesn't matter how they do it, I just make my self less likely to be pointed out over anyone else.

What you, or anyone else thinks of me is of no matter, some people are not going to like me, and some are. But setting your self up to stand out and conform to not conforming by dressing like that is a sure way to get made fun of and poked at. So they can run home and cry and blog about how some one made fun of them.

When in reality had they just stopped trying to be different, and end up being the same as everyone else who is trying to be different they would have never been made fun of in the first place.

here is what makes me different, if you seen me in public and made fun of me, I would just leave and go on.

I can drive away in my truck I worked hard for and feel good about my self, because I know not everyone will like me.

A "emo" would cry and run home and blog and update his/her facebook status about it.

"emos" set them selfs up to be made fun of and ridiculed bu others so they can cry about how no one understands or cares.
