Emotes!

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:05 am

I'de LOVE to see NPC's sitting down on the grass, itching themselves, yawning, dancing, laughing, crying, sneezing, THE WORKS! I hated how emotion in Oblivion was so static! I want to be able to see emotionaly the impacts I have on the world! If I kill a young boy's father I want to see the boy cry on the floor and then madly run at me asking me "WHY?!". Or if I save a village I want them to all cheer and laugh and play! I know this seems rather picky but this is exactly what I think was missing in previous TES games, it was lacking emotionaly... This is why I think more NPC emotes would go a very, very long way. Do you agree/disagree? :tes:

My, you're cranking out the topics.

Agreed, I don't see why anyone would disagree with this provided it was implemented correctly and it wasn't a 'main' focus. Afterall, some games focus on things like this too much and forget the core ideas.
Though I don't know of Bethesda doing this.

Nothing too stupid, I hope. If I see NPCs /farting on each other I will be very upset ;) (yeah Im looking at you fable.)
But NPCs having a range of emotions/actions would be cool.

New people generally do (I'm guilty ;) ) When they're repeating threads though...That gets annoying.

Anyways, yea, hopefully this Radiant AI will be as good as Bethesda claims.

I notice a lot of new members do this. As for the op idea, yes more idle animations the better.

Seeing shivering isles, and the trailer (there's an old woman who just leans on the railings), I think we'll see things like that

Fallout 3 had a fair amount of this. Leaning against the walls, on railings, hitting their neck as if a mosquito bit them, scratching their heads, looking contemplative, etc.

Sneezing was in there too I think.

Glad your excited about Skyrim and I like this post. The big jump in Oblivion AI was the NPCs get up go to work, sleep thing....and they did that very well. I think this fits into what we can expect as the next big NPC behavior-wise jump with Skyrim. I suspect NPC behavior will be very complex in this game as the big AI jump and ( barring farting on each other... although that orc in the new screen caps looks like a farter to me!) we should expect love, hate, fear, joy in full abundance. Different reactions amongst various NPCs to the same event (some run from dangers, others face it as a basic example) is well within current programming abilities and just takes time. Bethesda may even go so far as keeping track of NPCs current moods, not just a set of predetermined responses for each NPC.. They're bragging about the new AI system and I have faith that it will be full of surprises. Be ready for a literally, 'never play through the game the same way twice' experience.

Yes, I definitely want this. I can't tell you how many times I've killed a NPC in Oblivion and other NPCs walk by the body like it's NOTHING. Hell, I've dragged the body over to an NPC and still, NOTHING.

Yes, I would rather see these actions and animations worked on instead of dismemberment. ;)

I concur. That is much more classy than dismemberment for TES. I think that the NPCs need more personality than blood and gore. Even when talking to people the rest of the world stops.

Well they included that sort of thing in Fallout 3, though probably not to the level you're suggesting, so you can be pretty sure it will be in Skyrim as well. They already have many of those animations made up, so it's just a matter of applying them to the Skyrim characters.

Nice thread! This would add a lot to the atmosphere and with all the new activities being added to liven the world up I don't see why this wouldn't be added.

This.

Maybe they were so afraid of you they were pretending you didn't exist. Reminds me of high school.

Not really. They already have those types of reactions in Fallout 3 so it won't be difficult for them to apply them to Skyrim. Cheering and clapping was in Fallout 3 as well, though they weren't quite able to do justice to sadness and misery. Overall I found the NPCs in Fallout 3 to be quite expressive, and fairly realistic in their behaviour. It was certainly a big step up from Oblivion.

Itching yourself and sneezing are emotions?

Agreed. I'm really hoping Beth has gone that extra mile to remove the single largest obstacle for us modders. A hard coded limit on animations.

Edit: Actually, the presence of Havok Animation in the engine may have inherently removed this limitation.

They can be. Those are the kinds of things that people sometimes do when they're bored.

I agree! haha :D By the way I've remade the 18+ topic but this time I wrote down what happened in the previous thread and told everyone to be nice! The reason why i re-posted it is because I think that it is a very interesting, vital topic that has not been talked about by that many peopl. So i think its fair for people to voice what they think, don't worry though, if see any trouble i'll report it to you :)
