Emotional Attachment to Piper

Post » Sat Dec 19, 2015 10:56 am

(Character Build: Level 49, 7 Strength, 9 Perception, 6 Endurance, 10 Charisma, 10 Intelligence, 9 Agility, 7 Luck)

I'm a bit embarassed to admit this, but I lost my [censored] when I finally got to romance Piper. She's my favorite character in the whole game, and my experience has recently revolved around getting her to idolise me. Well, it finally worked, we're in a romance, and not only are the perks that come with it pretty great, but I also feel at peace, and I'm very happy. I feel a legitimate attachment to her character. This, however, isn't the first time a Bethesda game has done this to me. But this time around, Piper's personality matches my actual real world self, and nothing has made me happier in a long time. Please tell me that this is normal. In my 300+ hours sunk into this game on PC, nothing better than this has happened.

Anyway, Thanks for reading (if you didn't already leave because the cringe was too strong :)

I think this is why she resonates with you the most. If you find similarities in her that you see in yourself, you'll be connected with her. So while I strongly disagree with you from my own perspective, I can see how you or anyone can get attached to her or any character for that matter.

I don't think I was infatuated with any of the characters in this game. The only one that I was emotionally drawn to was http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Arlen_Glass

He was compassionate, he was creative, he was a thinker and he had a pretty good back story. What was the most powerful part of getting to know him was that you could actually give him some closure, something your son was even reluctant to give you.

Well, I like Piper too. I do wish she were a real person but that's as far as it goes. I also like Alyx in Half-Life 2. in Game of Thrones I like Missandei the girl Grey Worm likes. It's normal to have a crush on a fictional character. It just depends how far it goes.

Well good luck to you both. I'm roleplaying as much as I can through the game. But the one thing I cant seem to force myself to do, is to press that "relationship" option.
Might be something to do with the fact that when I loot armour off enemies, all the women are manky and filthy in their undies. Smelly too.
Nearest I came to trying the "relationship" option was yesterday, when I came accross a robot with a French accent, who had that option.
Spotless clean, enthusiastic and charming. Restrained myself though. Probably would not have worked out in the long run.

I like Piper a lot. I stuck with a few other companions exactly long enough to get their perks but she's the one I actually enjoy having around. I like her so much I gave her The Deliverer and put BW in her hat.

And when we're hanging at home, me in my laundered loungewear sipping a dirty wastelander, her in the Grognak outfit and Dogmeat playing in the yard, well the apocalypse doesn't seem like such a bad gig.

Was that too much information there? It was, wasn't it?

Hancock may be my favorite companion, but Piper is easily my favorite love interest. Maybe it was because she was my first?

Either that is normal, or you and I both have issues! :D

I really, really like Danse, especially after I witnessed his softer side, when it came to a kid and taking said kid home. I wanted to hug the big guy right then and there. It was a totally awww moment. Plus, I love that he has so much honor and integrity. I don't care who or what he is, but Danse is definitely my guy! :) I was actually surprised to see that FO 4 had such well written companions, with all these subtle nuances.

Also, as for falling for a video character head over heals... I just say Alistair  (from Dragon Age Origins - Have you ever licked a lamppost in winter? hahaha... yea, you had to be there) :)

@ Silverage: LOL Aww that's sweet! I still need to get Danse out of his bulky PA! hahaha

Still won't let you sleep in her bed, though =)

I like Piper, she's pretty well done. I prefer Nick, though, as he's got a slightly more interesting story.

Piper is definitely my favorite companion. I romanced her pretty early in the game, so I've had a lot of time to get attached to her.

I feel the same about Paladin Danse and MacCready. Really feel attached to them both.....is it just me or is the writing and voice acting in this game top notch?

I don't know if I am being biased because so few games offer m/m romances.....but I really like both characters and their back stories.

Now if only we could get Danse out of his power armor and into some regular gear sometimes, lol.

Again, Lone Wanderer for the win.
Same problem in Skyrim. I kept killing or massively injuring my companions.
Yes, I know a single perk fixes that but the second Dogmeat wandered through prox mines?
I was like: "Oh hell no"
Besides, extra DR, carrying capacity, and damage is nice.
What was this about permanently gaining companion perks?

Personally, I'm more fond of Nick; and if Danse would would grow up, I'd like him more. Nick's story and personally issues really tug at my heartstrings, and his over personality and asthetic is delightful. Danse's story and nature are endearing (especially his dorkier moments, like with the Silver Shroud mission or the SS' flirtations), but his tendacy to embody the Brotherhood's ideals, especially after his "quest" are really off-putting; Fridge needs to learn to play well with others. It would be nice if we got some expanded content for Danse that gave him more character growth, rather than the stagnation that we got.

Say, Bethesda, how's that Nick Romance patch coming along?

I'm really annoyed. I have spent about 25 hours with Piper, she like everything I do, she idolizes me and I have her perk, I have a charisma of 10, all 3 Lady Killer perks, I have nearly finished the main quest. Piper is clearly bugged on my game because she is un-Romance-able. I've already checked everywhere online and there is pretty much nothing else I can do. It's frustrating to say the least. Felt genuinely deflated!! Maybe I'll move on to Cait, maybe even Curie. Screw Piper.... or not as the case may be!

I read somewhere that Danse develops similar feelings in the gay community. I am totally sure that I am straight but Danse is my favorite companion so far in the game, I have met the others but for one reason or the other I don't like to have them much time around except for Cait. And it kinda worries me that I might be gay, yeah I know that if you are gay you are supose to be proud and all that crap, but I am sure that if I ever felt like I were gay I would already know.

But at least let me explain to you why I prefer Danse.

I never cared bout Mcgready to get her as companion, never took Preston so idk how good or bad he is, I only know that he's uninsteresting and I don't like to talk to him much because of his quests, and I havent met Curie and the other dude.

Piper: I like her personality sorta, but her quest gives her available to you too quick, I can't see myself traveling around with Piper and feel safe, she's just a [censored] journalist, how can I even expect her to survive or defend herselv when she travels with me? I cant help but feel worried that she will get killed and [censored] by some raiders. I don't even think she ever killed anyone in her life before meeting me. Yeah I know companions in the game are immortal killing machines, but I am talking about her character, she doesn't look like that, and she's handed to you for no reason as a follower, doesn't she need to work? You would expect a journalist to be very busy.

Dogmeat: A damn dog that ruins my plans more often than not, plus he's a dog, do you seriously except a dog to save you from an army of super mutants? you even hear conversations of them talking about eating dogs, plus dogmeat animations when he's down make him look like he's suffering more than any other companion you will meet, and those sounds he make. I doubt it would be possible to realistically sneak around with that dog following you.

Codsworth: Smart and obedient, plus he's a robot so you won't care if he gets attacked or not, he's like a weapon with personality that talks to you and says your name. But he's weak later.

Strong: Better companion than the rest, but realistically who would trust to be around strong? he also complains a lot, I would never take him with me without fearing he would try to eat me if he becomes crazy at some point or if I do something that bothers him which already happens all the time. So [censored] him.

Cait: A junkie raider that probably had six with every guy, girl, and living thing around for jet. She's also bad in the head, and extremely dangerous, she have probably killed more people than you ever will, she has a huge distrust and grudge on mankind. At this point she's not even a human being, I've seen robots in the game more human and relatable than her. She's atractive yeah, but if I ever saw myself in a situation when I had to take her with me I would just ask her to go somewhere else out of fear that she would kill me when she's on drugs. I bet most people wouldn't even care about her if instead of an atractive girl she was some old fat guy with the same personality and past. And the fact that she have probably experienced every sixual fetish in a world already twisted, is a huge turn off for me. She's worse than a filthy [censored] in that aspect. No way to develop feelings for someone like that.

Nick: He's reliable, smart, careful, he's been in some battles, and you won't feel bad if you see him getting hurt because he's just a robot. But he's useless, I don't see Nick taking out a mirelurk queen by himself, he looks so weak, weaker than piper, he looks like some old man with cancer, I would only take him with me if I have to figure out stuff, like a password and [censored], but realistically I wouldn't even try to bother him and distract him because he's supose to be working just like piper.

Danse: Now we come to the last option, Danse, he's smart, loyal, strong, he's been through some serious [censored] but always kept his head cold, unlike Nick he's never been captured, you don't care if he takes damage because he's always wearing his glorious Power Armor, he even survived a Spaceship Rocket Ignition!, you can definitely trust him, he never ever lies, he's in the best faction in the game, unlike the other followers I see Danse entering a Super Mutant building alone and come out alive unscratched. And let's not forget how skilled he is to dissapear completly to the point the whole prydwen was unable to find him. He never tries to hurt you not even in his last moments, and he kept his loyalty and ideals to the point he was willing to die for them. Danse has everything, and his story and quests are much more interesting than the rest of the companions.

He affected my first playthrough to the point I never took another follower with me on my first char. That's why I think he's the best but I have a lot of valid reasons to say for sure that it's not a sixual attachment.

I just can't do companions in this game - but if I could choose one it would be Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite. Best companion in any game ever.

Maybe apart from the Dwarf in Neverwinter Nights 2. Or Cass in Vegas or the spider torch robots in Doom 3. Or maybe Dr Janice Polito in System Shock 2.... (meep!!!)

Nah. It's Elizabeth.

Let's hope for a Elizabeth companion mod, oh wait no need to hope I will be making such a mod :D

Question, what did you like most about Elizabeth, why is she considered a fav by so many?

A mixture of the modelling and the acting, but also Infinite used the best ‘companion’ engine I’ve ever seen in any game. It cheated her location all the time, but always out of sight. Heavily scripted, and would never work in something like FO, but still remains the pinnacle masterpiece of ‘companionship’ in computer gaming - imo. Simply brilliant.

Wow I didn't know that. I thought maccready was that girl from the vault that asks you 3 fusion cores, since I only know maccready for his name and never actually met him in the game then maybe that's why. Never met curie either.

I have to disagree with part of this. Yeah the initial meeting with her is somewhat crazy and she probably had those issue however..

Spoiler
One you do the quest where she breaks down and asks you to take her back to this machine that will help cure her of all her drug addictions you see a new side of her. I find myself drawn to her just because you are the first person shes ever felt comfortable with and could open up to. Its like you're the only person that ever treated her as human. Heck, even her own parents sold her off once she hit 18. If you havent played through her whole story I definitley suggest doing so.

Spoiler

I already did all that, that's why I know the kind of person she is and about everything she has done. She told me herself when I was idolized.

I also helped to cure her addiction but she still hates when I help people, the only difference from the old Cait is that she no longer likes when I use drugs, she hates it now.

She always stayed out of the way, there was no need to babysit her ever, despite the fact that she's playing the role of an adolescent that needs protection by the player. She frequently tosses ammo, health, and money at the player when they need it without really breaking the action. On revival, half the time she's there bringing you back. Basically, she was the "Cortana" of the game, but she had an actual presence in the world and did more for you than just play the voice in your head. Finally, there was actually character growth with her.

Of course, personally I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my pod brothers from Star Wars: Republic Commando. This is the only game I recall where I was legitimately pissed at command for giving me the orders they did at the end of the game. These were my brothers, I lead them through combat, picked them up when they went down, they picked me up when I went down. We fought through a hordes of super battle droids being dispersed infinitely from some compact factory. And in the end, I was ordered to leave one of them behind when I was all set to go rescue him.
