Enchanted Items Aesthetics

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:55 am

[EDIT, 27 April, edited the post according to users comments]
Okay, Iv'e always liked enchanting my items. But in Morrowind, the effects were to overcooked on enchanted weapons and in Oblivion they were only FAINT, only just being able to tell if it had an enchantment on it or not.
Now what I want in Skyrim is when I enchant a weapon with, let's say 20 frost damage, I would want some kind of frosty look on my sword, Ice on it, a cold chill of steam like you see coming from your freezer when it's really cold. It's not that I want them to have a good look to tell me what enchantment they have on them, it's just for the looks of the weapons, if your not bothered about the looks then Bethesda wasted years developing a new graphics engine for Skyrim.
Here are a few more examples of weapons with enchantments on them and what I would want them to look like:

Fire Damage - It's on fire or kind of has like fiery cracks down the sides: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.epicarmoury.de/multistore/images/artikel/big/1514.png&imgrefurl=http://www.dein-larp-shop.de/product_info.php%3FcPath%3D1_6%26products_id%3D1514%26osCsid%3Ddhhqmfkyrf&usg=__2m-YH_kOK8pY5H5u4DE147icguc=&h=500&w=350&sz=99&hl=en&start=48&zoom=1&tbnid=DCehjeYylUXf3M:&tbnh=156&tbnw=107&ei=sC63TYLCM4yJhQfYts33Dg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfiery%2Bsword%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D677%26gbv%3D2%26site%3Dsearch%26tbm%3Disch0%2C1200&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=1051&vpy=304&dur=4429&hovh=268&hovw=188&tx=153&ty=259&page=3&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:17,s:48&biw=1280&bih=677 or http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://media.steampowered.com/apps/440//icons/c_rift_fire_mace_large.png&imgrefurl=http://optf2.com/item/243194817&usg=__zgVrzt-0LQnQ1lqycD6yy6Oyvg0=&h=512&w=512&sz=58&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=0N7urtNLGMP0-M:&tbnh=124&tbnw=113&ei=9S63TbrWBYazhAeF7amEDw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfire%2Bmace%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D677%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=444&page=1&ndsp=31&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0&tx=27&ty=53 or http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://files.turbosquid.com/Preview/Content_2009_07_14__06_58_49/flame%2520of%2520the%2520west.jpgce1e0e55-f539-4495-adbb-05c62c7fa6efLarger.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/385833&usg=__3MsCzwVUTCwod2pltyWG_thR0aQ=&h=450&w=600&sz=27&hl=en&start=186&zoom=1&tbnid=-BJRU2jYTtWOTM:&tbnh=165&tbnw=213&ei=LDK3Te6LCsawhQf3os2IDw&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dglowing%2Bsword%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DX%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D677%26tbm%3Disch0%2C5400&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=881&vpy=345&dur=344&hovh=194&hovw=259&tx=123&ty=157&page=11&ndsp=17&ved=1t:429,r:4,s:186&biw=1280&bih=677

..Not to mention the item's name. "Frostbane dagger" kind of indicates that it is enchanted imo.

But enchanted effects would be nice to see on weapons.

I can't remember seeing flames coming out of a weapon, ice on the sword, or electric whizzing up and down a huge axe??

It wasn't in Oblivion. Morrowind had truflame and hopesfire, unique weapons that emitted flames for an aesthetic look, but Oblivion only had enchanted effects.

Weapons did not appear to have elemental aesthetics to them when enchanted...maybe a certain glow at most. Some Unique weapons did, but those were custom tailored.

I'm going to go on it tomorrow and update this thread because I'm sure there was no enchantment aesthetics on a weapon.
And all you's that are saying you already what enchantment it has on because of the name, for the last time, it's for the looks!!!!

OP said they didnt have an aesthetic, but they did. Whether it was extravagant or not, it was there.

TC first sentence:
Okay, Iv'e always liked enchanting my items. But one thing iv'e always wanted in Oblivion was to be able to tell whether or not a weapon was enchanted without slicing someone's face off.

You could tell this in Oblivion.

Indeed, I understand, but then you have to understand that they DO have a different look. Maybe its nothing but a glow, but it's still there. Saying its not there is just nonsense.

:lmao:

You'd make a good politician

It was there in the slightest form. What the OP is proposing is that the destructive element takes over the weapons appearance. Very few weapons in Morrowind and Oblivion have done that.

Look at my edit. Im not saying whether I think we should or shouldn't have it, I was replying to his first sentence. That there was a way to see your enchantment, that it did have a effect etc.

there were color differences on the enchanted weapons.. when you took out mehrunes razor it would glow red. Still, not quite what I would love to see though. I would love to see actual flames on a fire weapon (if not all the time then maybe during attack animations) and things like that. I think that is what the OP meant.

I prefer more subtle approaches. I liked the Edgeglow of Oblivion, but the best would be a very distinct "Rune" system that visually represents each enchantment effect inscribed on the weapon(small, but recognizable)

Not entirely unplausable, since I guess decaling your Armor is in?

In Oblivion you could only tell because of a faint glow. You'd have to really look to notice it. I'd like to see a nicer visual effect as well.

Didn't Oblivion have that annoying "shiny saran-wrap" thing going on?

I don't remember exactly what it looked like, because it was bad enough that I've had a "remove the glow" mod installed ever since my first playthrough.

Oblivion had a sword called Chillend or something like that. It did frost damage, and also weakness to frost for like 10-20 secs. It kind of looked like a glass sword but it was blue instead of green.

They could have aesthetics along the lines of what DAO had when you put a rune in a weapon, that would look like what you were talking about and it would look nice.
