I haven't used enchanting in past games and want to try them. Thusfar I've disenchanted one magic item (Frost Damage). I have several soul gems that I found or purchased or nicked (Petty and one lesser that are filled). I've found an enchanter's table (in wizards office in Whiterun).

I've opened the table and gotten my bow, the frost damage enchant but when I get to the soul gem section it remains greyed out and won't let me select any gems in my inventory. Am I missing something here? (I do not have the first skill point in enchanting if that is what allows you to begin enchanting.)

Are you sure the gems have a soul within them?

If not, buy some that do or fill them with 'Soul Trap'.

The soul gems have to be filled with a soul. Use soultrap spell on an enemy and then kill it.

all of the above.. and if your lazy wait 2 days and buy filled jems from the court wizard in whiterun... you can get a good 5 or 6 fileld gems every 2 days but it will cost ya so you gotta have a good stash of money saved to supplement that

I have three petty that are filled. My inventory shows this:

Petty Soul Gem (10)
Petty Soul Gem (Petty) (3)

When I select the 3 gems it says Filled with Petty Soul.

So, I have three filled gems...but the gem option won't open on the enchanter.

hmm must be glitched or somehting doesnt make sense to me honestly... if you chose an item, then an enchant, and then go to your soul gems in that order there is no reason your filled soul gems wouldnt show up

Sounds like a bug to me. Maybe get a better soul gem and then try again.

Figured it out...and yes it was stupid.

I had to set the damage/charges on the enchant option before I could get past it to the gem part.

I know this is going to sound stupid...but are you making sure you confirm the amount of frost damage you want the bow to deliver? After you select the frost damage enchantment, hit the select button (I'm on the PC so it's enter or e for me) then you can move on to pick a soul gem.

One more question for now....you can only enchant with spells learned from disenchanting...but not your spellbook? Gonna have to find a weapon with Soul Trap on it then.

I hate that you can't use spells to make enchantments. 'Tis annoying. I haven't found many enchanted items at all.

Additional question for this thread:

Does anyone know at what skill level do you start enchanting items that are more powerful than the average stuff that you can find?

I'm level 27 in Enchanting and the stuff I'm crafting is still pretty weak.
