How much did/do you play oblivion? if you played a mage, enchanting was like the best thing ypu could do. I had different outfits with maxed out spell effects. e.g maxed out fortify intelligence or chameleon or willpower or reflect/absorb spell. plus i had several fortify intelligence spells to be able to cast a total destruction spell.
It will be much fun to see how its done in skyrim.

and for a blade dude it is awesome too. a sheild damage effect on a full deadric armour set --> invulnerable to normal damage

In Oblivion you could permanently add a spell, once you learned it, to a piece of clothing, such as Fortify Intelligence by 10. And you could enchant weapons, such as fire damage 5pts, once you hit the enemy. That's basically how it worked. In Skyrim it is a skill, instead of a game-feature in Oblivion.

We don't really know how enchanting will be handled in Skyrim but here is what I'd love to see:

on-the-fly enchantment!

You have a sword in one hand and a fire spell in the other. Then, you apply the fire spell on your sword to obtain a temporary flame sword that draws its power from your magicka. Additionally, the sword takes damage from your spell. Higher quality materials are less affected.

Of course there should also be other forms of enchantment that do not rely on your own magical powers (enchanting via soul gems).

that would be AWESOME!! a warrior- mage mix can buff his sword before battle and charge with swords blazing. hmm what about other items... hah a wooden staff... buff it with a fire spell and it incinerates in your hands. it opens up a lot of potential. example: You see a rat in a shrubbery. you pick up a stick and set it on fire, with a spell, and toss it in the bushes. The shrubbery is ablaze and out comes a panicked burning rat. though you could just have used the fire spell, but that's not as fun. And what about ice spells. buff an apple with ice and drop it and it shatters in an thousand pieces.
