Enchanting, Smithing (and Alchemy) Need to be Easier to leve

Post » Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:56 am

So one thing Ive been thinking on is how much more relaxed the leveling system is this time, there really isn't a reason to not level, unless you wanna buy some trainer points, but one thing that bugs me is how tedious smithing, enchanting and to a lesser extent (because you use it much more) alchemy is to level. Right now I counted (using the Warrior Stone) around 6-11 Iron daggers (scaling from level 30 to 100) per level needed to raise it. Being that if I'm just playing "Naturally" unless I have some ore and leather Im not going to improve or smith something more than say 20-50 times a game, so if I want to benefit from 100 something I need to power level it, if I want to stay balanced I need to do it in increments ie up to level 50 until Im level 30 then 70 until 40 then 100 until I make a new char. Im not saying you should get 1 level every iron dagger but lessening it would both make it more clearly marked as a skill to level as you go and would make it probable to level to 100 just playing "laissez-faire"

EDIT: PLEASE READ THE THREAD BEFORE POSTING, WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT POWER LEVELLING

I'm going to let you in on something. They are very easy to level. In fact, so easy it's almost game-breaking.

archery will take you some time..but it is about as balanced as it should be. (just about the only skill that scales well, that I've encountered)

No, they don't.

It's already possible to power level them (Make a load of iron daggers to level up crafting for example) and then make some seriously overpowered stuff.

Agreed, I do not see where the OP thinks they could get any easier. Alchemy.....I pick up stuff for a couple days and make alot of potions and skill up. Smithing........Get a bunch of cheap iron ingots and leather strips and skill up fast. Enchanting.......Take all the cheap stuff you made with smithing and make cheap petty enchants on the stuff and then sell it. That is about as easy as it can get......LOL

Obvious sarcasm is obvious. You can get 100 in any of these, and make money in the process, in a matter of an hour or less. Time is not the limiting factor. You have to impose your own limits in this game. I limit myself to one crafting skill and limit that to 2.5 skill levels for each character level. That seems reasonable to me.

Enchantment levels up pretty fast especially if you disenchant items. It is only Alchemy that levels up very slowly.

My post is serious, I'm not saying they should be easier to power level, but easier to level while just playing along, power leveling isnt the issue, people that want to do it will, if it takes them 1 hour or 10, Im talking about making it easier for people that just play the game as they go, like the above poster said he needs to limit himself, I ask why not just make it easier to level when you are going to smith anyway instead of having to power level and stop every few levels

Tip: the same mechanic that works for enchanting, is the exact same one for alchemy.

@ OP.

I'm sorry. It just CAN NOT get any easier than it already IS.

this is true, and alchemy, though I haven't done it much, should be somewhat slower than other skills as you should be constantly making potions, but why force power smithing if you want to reach 100?

Play a warrior and smith as you go, if you reach 100 by the end of the game I will concede, but you won't smith up weps you find as there isnt profit, and you won't make your own weps because you can just find them, so at best you will spend your time improving found weps you want to equip, which will take you up to level 50 at best

Also I laid out the numbers, I need to smith approx 110 items from 90 to 100, I won't make 110 items in a single entire game unless I'm power smithing

And this I think addresses a huge community disconnect right now, between being forced to level smartly in the past games and the much more free style leveling now, you don't need to power level certain skills to come out powerful, it's meant to play as you go

Because many people don't want to level to 100 simply by crafting 4 suits of armor and a couple weapons... which is about all I would craft for myself. That would force my character to level far too quickly.

Protip1: To get good at something you need to practice.
Protip2: People generally practice with the most readily available materials to make the most expensive items.
Protip3: The most readily available materials and most expensive items are iron and leather to make iron daggers, Alchemy doesn't matter, you just need to find the most expensive potions you can make.

You should be able to take it from here, feel free to drop back to tell us how the crafting skills are too easy to level.

What Skyrim really needs is diminishing returns on skillups from leveling low level items. WoW's crafting scheme does this very well.

I became a jeweler.

222 hours in. Lv. 65 @ 4%

Blacksmithing is waaaay too easy to level. They should fix it so that you stop receiving exp from making old stuff. For example if you want to smith beyond steel items you have to level your smithing by making steel items. That would actually make sense and be more realistic. This would give value to other armor and weapons before ebony, dragon and Daedric. It makes no sense that i would ever make for example orcish armor when i can just make few more iron daggers to get ebony. Same should be applied to alchemy and enchanting too.

@shagsbeard-Is there no middle ground between smithing 110 items for 10 levels and 4 for 100? can you not think of one? please read before replying

@jimmy-protip4-saying protip makes you look like a [censored]
I hate leveling smithing, its very tedious, it took me about an hour to power level before I realized thats not how the game is meant to be played, read my above posts, if you play the game "laissez-faire" as a warrior and actually hit 100 smithing I will concede

@embargo(again)- again If you hit 100 (at that rate it will be 400 hours before you do) I will concede

If anything, all of those skills are far too easy to level.
All skills in fact.

I dont think I have ever gotten 100 destruction in Morrowind or Oblivion before playing 250 hours.
In Skyrim I got it after not even 100.

What are you talking about, they are all easy to level up.

Alchemy experience is dependent on the value of the potion, if you know what you are doing you can make +2500 value potions, which will get you a lot of experience. Considering you can just go from city to city buying out ingredients and selling a potion to cover the costs, its not hard to level up.

Smithing is the easiest by far, even doing it casually won't take long. Crafting iron daggers/leather bracers gives to much experience at high levels IMO.

Enchanting isn't bad to level up either, you don't need to enchant many items to level up, even at level 80+.

Dead on. Good job. Bingo.

ofc this is a Single player game, and can be played any way the one person sees fit. but as it stands now, skill leveling is lol. It was designed for, well I'll just...nvm..

While Im not opposed to that change, you can't curtail power leveling, the game was designed for people to play as they go, but with smithing you can't max the skill without power leveling

@embargo(again)-It's not WoW, you don't need to power level to be "good" thats not the point, the point is a "natural" experience as you go, at the pace you need to level smithing you NEED to power level to max the skill, thats my point

Blacksmithing and Enchanting are extremely easy to max out, especially when leveled together. Make a bunch of rings and iron daggers, put a crappy enchant on them, sell them. Alchemy is the only one that seems balanced, in which the more the potions costs, the more xp you get in that tree.

According to Embargo's post it takes 222 hours playing "naturally" as a "Jeweler" class to hit level 65, so it takes almost double that time, I'm not talking about other skills just the crafting ones

no. I'm sorry, just no. after you get a few hundred hours in come on back. This game is So watered down and yet people want to thin it down even MORE?

Also, you thinking I'm a World of Warcraft player is nice and all, But I can tell you this. I play(ed) Guild Wars. WoW has never, nor will EVER be in my Resume of games played.

and no @ your above post.

you are taking things waaay waaaay waaay out of context. play the game. come back in a few days.
