Enchanting - Too many restrictions.

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 11:57 am

I dont want to use the frase "dumbed down", I will just say that enchanting has too many restrictions, compared to the previous TES games. I cant enchant gloves and boots with any fortify magick school, or with magicka regeneration? Whats up with that? Now my mage run around with plain boots and gloves, because of the limited enchanting system in this game.

Bethesda, what wre you thinking? It worked fine in Oblivion and Morrowind. Why would you try to fix something thats not broken?

I agree. I also think it's lame that you can't enchant a light spell to an item. In Oblivion, I had a ring which I named "flashlight" which I would toggle on and off when I entered dungeons or other dark areas. It boggled my mind when I discovered that wasn't possible in Skyrim

I installed a mod that removed the restrictions. I quickly learned that there is a cap that resets on magic resistance. So when I'd shield block (I had the anti elemental damage talent), I'd be hit as if I had no magic resistance at all.

Enchanting is powerful as is. Some say it's OP. You want to make it more powerful? If they allowed enchanting everything on everything, you will probably make a different post about how OP and broken it is and how it was so much better on Oblivion and Morrowind. To me, not having played Oblivion, restricting enchanting for certain items makes some sort of intuitive sense. What is one part of the body that is least used for casting magic? I would say feet.

But you are right about the fact that there is little that directly benefit a pure mage on feet and hands. I'm playing a pure mage who does not do enchanting, and the best thing he found to wear on feet are a pair of boots enchanted with shock resistance found at Archmage's quarters. Since, I'm a Nord, if I could enchant shoes myself, I would enchant it with Fire and Shock resistance. I don't have anything on my hands at the moment, but if I could, I would enchant it with Fortify Magicka and Fortify Sneak.

There is a lot wrong with Skyrim ... but let me jump on the defend cart for once..
Enchanting being more restricted makes the gameplay more balanced... same for the limitations on certain effects being not available for enchanting.
The chameleon effect/ invisibility is a good example...
In morrowind and Oblivion enchantments could be used to be God pre lvl cap pretty quickly. Morrowind even more so.. it got nerfed..

the point of enchanted items is so that you have god-like abilities.

True, but that is just a bug. Not testing properly for boundary conditions in any program code is something that blows my mind, because it is so basic and simple. Yet there it is.
