enchanting wrist irons

Post » Sun Jul 17, 2011 6:34 pm

I've kept my wrist irons from the starter dungeon and have just acquired access to the Arcane University. I want the irons to be my main wrist accessory, so I want to enchant them in the most useful way possible. Initially, I was thinking of going with Fortify Strength (for both carrying capacity and weapon damage) as my character's Strength is pretty low and will probably only get up to 50ish by the end of the game, but I'm wondering if there is a more useful enchantment. Just to give you an idea, my character has a ninja theme (high stealth, decent magic, only blades for weapons) so I know Chameleon is an obvious choice (though I've yet to find the spell), but I'm open to other ideas as well. Thanks.

I usually keep them safe untill i'm level 17+ then get a sigil stone and enchant them with a stone that my character would see as useful EG: current character is a mystic elf using bow+magic so a fortify magika 50 pts would be a very useful enchantment.

I′d go with fortify magicka as well. You can never fail with that plus it never gets useless as you level up

Boy, I wish Lothran had kept his wrist irons but he was too eager to throw them away...

From the small description of your character, I would recommend fortify magicka as well. Other good candidates are shock shield or fire shield. In each case, the level 17+ sigil stones are stunningly good for this.

As you know, there is one set of wrist irons in the basic game. The DLC's add a combined total of four more sets. Ideally, enchant one set early on and save another set for an enchantment that requires a higher level.

Really? I wouldn't have thought fortify magika. I figure my Intelligence is going to be maxed by the end of the game so I'd have all the magika I'd need. But ok, if that's the case, what would you name it? With Fortify Strength, I was going to go with something like "Mighty Bonds". I can't think of anything for a magika enchantment that fits withe the prison theme.

Base magicka is Int * 2, so without enchantments, racial or birthsign bonuses, you'll end up with 200 magicka. Don't know if that's enough; frankly, I've never had a character reach "end game".

How about "Braces/Bonds of Aetherius"? Aetherius is said to be where magicka originates.

Your right. I forgot about the other DLC's. Sorry, for the misinformation.

Your higher level magic requirements can vary. More skill in the school of magic from which a spell comes from dramatically lowers its cost. I have found illusion and conjuration to be pretty efficient, because you can cast one spell, then wait for a time (regenerating magic) before you need to cast another. Destructionists that want to blast away with the elements use much more magic and very rapidly - the better ones learn how to boost their efficiency via no armor, weakness to magic stacking and spell chaining. Once your restoration gets high enough, you can stop carrying more than one repair hammer or potions that cure/heal/restore. Basically, you can do about anything with plenty of magic, so lots is good. :)

And just for balance, an opposite view. The wrist irons are weightless, so they can be used for reverse pick-pocketing. That allows you to provide boosted equipment to allies or "cursed" equipment to someone you want to kill without getting a bounty. The usual candidates are the mage's hood and the "permabound" daedric items, but if you run the UOP then the permabound glitch is undone, leaving very few choices. I'd consider keeping the irons and a few mage's hoods for the times you need to buff up allies.

That said, a mage uses the first set as his only option for an enchanted hand slot without losing spell effectiveness. This is for any others you can obtain.

I talked a long time ago to those involved in the Unofficial Oblivion Patches (UOP). Their thoughts on 'fixing' the permabound glitch is that the command console allows one to 'create' permabound items just fine - and it does. UOP, as does the command console, only applies to PC users of course. :foodndrink:

There's one more pair of Wrist Irons. The Cuffs Of Pain was it? Pre enchanted, and with a terrible enchantment. but still.

There's so many spoilers in this thread  guess nobody minds if I publicly ask for another.

I had my wizard character enchant the wrist irons for a slow burning effect on the wearer, so that if he reverse-pickpocketed it onto an NPC it would slowly kill him or her while I had a good lol. But when I tried to give it to an NPC, nothing ever happened. Somebody told me it was because I named it "wrist irons of death" or somehting, and that I should have given the irons a name starting with the letter "A" instead, because NPCs equip items in order from A to Z. Does this sound right?

NPC's will don the first item for a particular slot based on where it appears in their inventory. They will don 'Awesome Wrist Irons' before they will don 'Leather Gauntlets'.

I knew this thread would turn out like that. It's not just this one, there's about three more that need to be moved. Some are 6 pages deep.

I usually enchant water walking onto a pair of shoes. This is consistent with the random enchanted stuff in the game, where foot-wear is for Water Walking, Fortify Sneak, and Fortify Athletics. You rarely need Fortify Sneak when you're walking across a lake. The only downside of that is that shoes are a bit heavier than other articles of clothing, so you have to allow for carrying the extras. But I like using the shoes because it just seems to fit the enchantment.

I realize your intent. It's just some of the threads you start, about questions of gameplay, would be better suited in the spoiler forum. Just something to think about future threads. ;)

Yeah, I know, after the thread I did about the well, I became more conscientious of where my threads could lead. I wouldn't have thought that asking about a single enchantment would take off as such.

However, in an effort to get back on track, I am still trying to think of a name for Wrist Irons enchanted with Fortify Magicka. So far, all I have is "Aetherian Bonds" or "Bonds of Aetheria".

How about:
- Bands of Aetherius
- Bracelets of the Arcane
- Bracers of Magic
- Mystic Bracers
- Galerion's Gauntlets (Vanus Galerion was the founder of the Mages Guild)
- Psijic Bands (Psijic Order is the oldest monastic group in Tamriel)
