[MOD] Enclave Mk.I Advanced Power Armor

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 4:07 am

I've been preemptively making the classic Mk.I Advanced Power Armor as a mod for Fallout 4 (for posterity, the enclave armor in Fallout 3 is the MK.II). Figure I've got enough done to post about it. I'd say I'm about 60% done, I need to wait until I can get my hands on the Fallout 4 exoskeleton model before I finalize the geometry and begin unwrapping, baking and texturing the model, and then I might need to wait for the creation kit after all that :bonk:

Anyways, some work in progress:

(Sidenote, thanks to Andrius Balciunas as well, for his awesome advanced power armor art http://www.cryinghorn.com/fallout_apa_another_trophy.jpg that I used for a degree of design inspiration)

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, but I figured this is pretty F4-related

That looks incredible! It's on par with some of the http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/3/35/Fallout4_Render_T51.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150828161504 Bethesda themselves have put out!

Thanks. I spent a lot of time looking over the power armor footage for reference and it's quite impressive the extent of detail they put into the new power armor models, so to match that quality it's been a pretty grueling foray into hard surface modeling for me.

My specialty and favorite job is really texturing, this project should come to life once I can bake down all the model details and start painting and layering the textures onto it; but that won't be until after the game releases and I can get my grubby hands on that exoskeleton

I'd be surprised if that model wasn't in the game some way some how.

I believe it is, as evidenced by this picture from the E3 video: http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/5/5e/X-01_Mk.II_Power_Armor.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150616215806

If that pic from the E3 crafting segment is to be believed, then Enclave Power Armour will be designated X-01.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/X-01_power_armor- The wiki entry for it.

As I typed above, it looks like that particular armour is already included. Although, your model is incredible.

Yeah, I don't really are too much if there's already an old-school Enclave Power Armor model included in Fallout 4 - this one still looks pretty good, and your model has plenty of differences between the on in-game. And I'm guessing that will only grow as you start texturing it.

Are you planning on just doing this, or other armor sets? Some Tesla or Hellfire armor would be right up my alley, and I'm really excited to see what modders do with just the basic layered armor system.

Isn't the MK. 1 already in the game? It's called the X-01, but it looks pretty much the same...

The other thing you need to take into account is how it'll open up. Power armor in this game folds open, remember.

The one in the game is likely a retcon of the MK.II APA that's in Fallout 3. As I said, the one seen in Fallout 2 is the MK.I. This is being built to coincide as essentially an older obsolete model of the X-01, I'll give it stats that lie inbetween the X-01 and the T60 to indicate that it's an improvement over pre-war models, but surpasses by the the MK.II and other later enclave armor variants (on the possible assumption that the X-01 is entirely new) The name "X-01" is probably just a rename to bring it in line with the likes of "T-51" and "T-45" name format.

It'll probably be "lore-friendly" standalone version, and a separate replacer version for people who want the X-01 stats and a model replacement.

They've done a very close job of replicating the appearance of the T51b and the T-45d, but the X-01 has a lot of differences between http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/d/db/APA.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070625092119, leading me to believe it's probably not the same one.

Those look great! I hope the creation kit doesn't take too long to be released. We've got some talented people in this community that I'm sure are just waiting to use it.

I wouldn't be so sure on that. The two pieces of armor look VERY similar to me. Beyond that, Mark I may be referring to the X-01, with Mark II referencing an X-02 variant we haven't seen yet (although it never appeared in Fallout Shelter, so it might not).

Anyway, I don't mean to put down your idea. You obviously put in a ton of time and effort into the model, and honestly it looks great!

Just from my own observations, the X-01 lacks the asymmetrical helmet design that the MK.I has, and the helmet is quite a lot more compact. On the left side of the forward-facing helmet the http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/d/db/APA.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070625092119 has a large hose going into the cranium, and a large corrugated hose that come round the side of the helmet and goes into the "cheek", and on the right side cheek it has a cylindrical HEPA filter, and the right side cranium has twin hoses that wrap around the side. The http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/5/5e/X-01_Mk.II_Power_Armor.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150616215806 on the other hand, has mirrored symmetrical hoses on either side of the helmet, has no cylindrical hepa filter in the cheek, and no hoses going into the "cheek" of the helmet. The reason I find this relevant is because the other power armor designs are perfect to almost every detail.

It's confirmed by Protector Casdin that the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Enclave_power_armor_(Fallout_3) was the enclave model featured in Fallout 3, the Mark I, as it was seen in Fallout 2 (and Fallout: New Vegas) was not featured in Fallout 3, so the only assumption to be made is the MK.I was effectively phased out by the time the Enclave reached the east coast. It wouldn't make sense that there was no mention or sighting of the Mark I in Fallout 3 on the east coast, and then suddenly in Fallout 4 the Mark II (that was ubiquitous in Fallout 3) is gone and only a retcon of the Mark I remains, even though it had no presence on the east coast in Fallout 3. So unless there's a MK.II armor we haven't seen yet, it just wouldn't make sense that the X-01 is anything but a renamed and retconned Mark.II.

This is all extremely convoluted I'll admit  but nonetheless I'll make 2 implementation versions just to give options on how people want it to coincide with lore.

Wow that looks amazing, the classic Enclave APA always was the best looking power armor and you're definitely doing it justice. :tops:

I hope you don't feel like I'm crapping on the work you've put into this. It looks wonderful. I see what you're talking about as far as differences go. My internal logic is simply that Bethesda usually doesn't retcon their stuff (as far as I know) without some sort of BS explanation (like the Dragonbreak from TES). I had always assumed that the MK I armor was (lorewise) a superior armor that the Enclave just couldn't feasibly manufacture anymore.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's a chance you'll encounter an "oh crap" moment when the armor you're putting a ton of effort into designing will already be in the game, but look different from what you made. Considering the work you did looks fantastic, scrapping it would be a waste if what I'm saying ends up occurring.

Ah, no worries, if it's worst case scenario and the X-01 is a retcon of the Mk.I APA then I'll just shift this towards being a "classic" model replacer of sorts. Hopefully that's not the case, but in either outcome I can shoehorn it in somewhere

Also to answer the earlier question about the armor opening, yeah I've accounted for all the seams and joints, though I definitely need that exoskeleton before I can finalize a lot of the careful little details :(

That's a good point. With a model that good looking, I bet people would download it as a classic replacement or something to that effect. I was wondering how you were going to fit that model onto a skeleton. Are you going to start on the finer details once you have something more to work with, or flesh it out now and fix any weirdnesses when you're fitting it?

You wouldn't even have to make it a replacer in the worst case scenario, in my opinion. Just get creative with the naming conventions, so that it's an alternate (or prototype?) version of the existing X-01 model - maybe call it X-00?
