Endings?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:03 am

RPGs often provides multiple endings. Some games tell these endings with cutscenes, some with actual gameplay, some with ending sliders like Fallout series.
But TES never had multiple endings, and the single endings consisted of a final battle and a little cutscene.

After reading about The Witcher 2, which is supposed to have 16 different endings, each one told by a different cutscene, made me wonder how would TESV's ending be. Seeing as they done ending sliders with Fallout 3 it worries me that it will have the same thing. Personally, Fo3's ending was lame, and not very interesting, while FNV being much improved and actually fun to watch, I'd rather have different situations with different gameplay sections and cutscenes.

Maybe the finale wouldn't always be a battle with the last boss, or it could. Giving the player great choices and consequences can lead to different scenarios by the end of the game, which would increase replayability.

What do you think?

I'm not really sure, but to be honest all I really want is quests after you finish the main questline in that story, allow me to keep getting assassination contracts in the DB even after I become listener, let there be more jobs to do after becoming head of the FG, you get the idea.

I'm not even sure why an Elder Scrolls only needs 'one' main quest.
Why not have several well written, semi-unrelated stories without any of them dominating over the other?

Also, an over emphasis on the ending will probably give me that awkward post-game feeling that doesn't make me want to continue playing after the main quest.

As far as cutscenes go: If something truly epic happens, it's nice for the game to cut in and let you have a better view, but I don't like movies outside the engine.
In old games this was often pretty cool, but it's 2010 now. Games should be able to impress you enough without having to resort to pre-rendered movies.

One ending with three or four ways of getting there. Different perspectives on finding out how everything happened.

And TES games have had multiple endings.

Same as Oblivion's or Morrowind's: You finish the game, get a cutscene, maybe a good reward this time, some actual recognition from the citizens that you saved Tamriel, and then you continue with gameplay.
