Enemies and other npc's stuck inside rocks

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:54 am

Every so often I'll come across an enemy stuck inside a rock or stuck below ground. The only way for me to kill it is to turn off collisions, enter the rock or landscape to get close enough to the enemy to attack it, and then turn collisions back on.

Another problem along the same line is sometimes when I kill an enemy the body will sink into the ground, preventing me from looting it unless I turn off collisions.

Is this a bug based on my computer system or a bug in the game? I am playing on a system with a Q6600 quad core processor, 4GB of RAM, and a GeForce 9800 GTX+ video card. The game settings are set to 'medium'.

Sadly it is a game bug, there are many places where NPC's can get stuck, and fall through the world.

you can try using console:
kill
moveto player

Remeber using console disables achievements for that session. So, Save, quit, reload.

no its not based on your system, they said with the new patch they will fix some of those issues, but really that is unavoidable, just deal with it, and it is not really bethesdas fault it is more of havok and how it was incorperated into the game.

Thanks for the quick replies. The first time it happened I thought there were two enemies behind a large rock. I wasted a couple of grenades trying to kill them, then decide to circle around the rock. Of course, I did a full circle around the rock without seeing anything, but yet the friend/fow indicator said they were still there. I thought the game was doing a "Three Stooges" type joke, where the enemies were moving at the same time as was, always on the other side of the rock.

you can't patch that there is really nothing that can do the only thing that bethesda is doing is moving a few creatures up that is slightly underground, so if your gonna get mad at someone get mad at havok, it is really more of their fault

Really? And what about all the other games that implemented the Havok system with no issues? Do you need some examples or are you officially connected with Fallout New Vegas in some manner?

Thank you for your great gift of knowlege on this subject ! :liplick:

For what I've seen in my game and in the GECK while modding: a lot of landscape/rock meshes were scaled to make them bigger. This usually creates problems with havok collisions. If you play in 3rd person, you'll notice that while running on certain surfaces (mountains, paved roads), your feet sink to the ankles, whereas on other surfaces, if you get the right perspective, you'll notice you are actually "hovering": your feet are really not touching the ground.

And speaking of moving creatures high of the ground... for what I saw in my game and in the GECK, remember the flying deathclaws in FO3? The navmeshes were too deep into the ground.

plenty of other games with it have the havok issues, it is just in fallout that it is used more extensively, and you are welcome :)
