Enemies that you avoid

Post » Sat Jan 15, 2011 12:42 pm

Hey guys,

For some time today i caught myself doing something every time i am playing for a while with a high level character. I have a level 14 character and i like to explore the world in oblivion. When i just started off playing i visit every ayleid ruins, caves and so on. But now that i am leveling up i start avoiding these places because there are always wraths, will-o-the-whisps, spriggans and ghosts in it which I barely can beat. And i don't want to lower down the dificulty setting

Are there any people on this forum that run away or are avoiding places at the moment that they see some kind of enemy that you fear?

Will-o-the-Wisps definitely. Those things are terrible. Spriggans I usually try to avoid if I can as well, more for the summoned bear than the Spriggan itself.

I'm also not a fan of fighting Clannfears, since I usually prefer melee combat and they have such high damage reflection, and they hit hard.

When they first start showing up, I do about everything I can to avoid bears, and particularly brown bears. Mountain lions too, though they're less dangerous all in all - they still do a lot of damage, but they don't seem to stagger my characters as much. I'll also avoid will o'the wisps, but generally only with relatively slow-moving, poorly equipped and/or magic susceptible characters. With decent weapons and enough speed to get in and out of their range, I don't find will o'the wisps to be that dangerous. Just sort of annoying, since they so often mean I need to cast restore intelligence and restore willpower when I'm done with them. Have to keep moving though - it you try to stand toe to.... umm... blob with them, their absorb will eat you alive. Wraiths can be a challenge too - especially when they've got a sword. Most of the rest of the challenging things I can think of though only show up later, when my character's tough enough to deal with them anyway (liches, storm atronachs, xivalai....)

Honestly, the creatures I most studiously avoid are goblins. I hate everything about them - they're tougher then they have any business being (they don't do a lot of damage - they just take too long to kill), they make that horrible screeching noise, and they have lousy treasure. If I go into a dungeon and see goblins, I just turn around and leave rather than wasting my time.

Generally I avoid Will-O-The Wisps until I have a decent meat shield to summon and a good ranged weapon, staff or spell that damages them. I prefer a Headless Zombie and any Fire based attack. When I have these things I will often go looking for them because of the pain they have caused me.

Highwaymen. I hate having to kill them every time. And I mean come on, I have to kill them.

Liches and Xivilai, since they summon stuff, and are difficult to kill pre-emptively. They're a bit less aggravating if you demoralize/turn their minion away, though.

Gloom wraiths and goblins warlords. They aren't hard to kill, but they are very annoying to fight due to their amazingly amount of health.

Wisps used to frustrate me to no end when they first start showing up. Their Wrack and Mind Numb spells are so effective, I decided to create a slightly stronger spell for my Priestess character. From then on, she loved running into wisps, and giving them the same treatment. :chaos:

I really can′t understand why so many have so much problem with them. They are not exactly difficult to kill, right?

To answer the question, there aren′t that many creatures Lothran avoids. It would be a whole group of goblin warlords perhaps. If he′s tired. And out of magicka potions. And longs for the rousing company only a tavern can provide :P

Bloody Clannfears and Moutain Lions, they just hit as hard as nails, are almost impossible to dodge, and continually cause you to stumble. I've been killed by more than my fair share...

That all depends on the character. It's very easy to become overpowered in Oblivion (with experience, or purposely) as well as underpowered (with lack of experience in the leveling mechanics, etc, or by choice).

My old Priestess a prime example. The "wisp" spell made things very easy, and subsequently very boring, knowing in the back of my mind it was nigh impossible to lose anymore.

A lot of people prefer slightly under powered characters in some areas to maintain a challenge to the game to keep things interesting, without having to adjust the difficulty slider to compensate.

Trying to find a finite balance between underpowered and overpowered is my personal bane in Oblivion. :brokencomputer:

Anyways, I'm rambling :shifty: soooooo in short, yeppers, wisps can be challenging depending on the character.

Will-o-the-wisps don't stand up very long for me. I hate Storm Attronachs, I just always seem to have problems with them although anything that gets past my summon normally makes me you splat quite quick anyway. I've had a Goblin splat me when I have been day-dreaming about Aylied Ruins.

With a level 48 Character there is no monster that I can't defeat when you do the Knights of the nine missions and complete them the boots will allow you to walk right past animals like wolfs and bears and mountain lions without a problem they are your friends with the boots on but the one purple dude in the realm of oblivion always gives me a problem no matter what level I'm at that and the Minitor lords are a tough bunch.

Buffy tries to avoid combat with natural forest predators and sprigans. As a wood elf, she considers them too much like kin. I expect someday, she will learn to move peacefully among them.

It gets to the point where I refuse to close Oblivion gates, just on the off chance there are Spider Daedra in there. They shouldn't really be that hard to kill, bot somehow a spiderling always, always manages to get through and paralyse in the middle of a fight with at least two Dremora and a Daedroth.

There's a mod called Arachnophobia that might help with that. There's an even better mod called Fewer Random Oblivion Gates.

I run from zombies. They're just so ugly. They completely ruin the creepy atmosphere of a good dungeon. There's a mod to get rid of them, too, but I'm having a mod conflict with it right now so it doesn't work. In the past before I found that mod, I always used detect life to see what sort of creatures were going to be in a dungeon, and went the other way if it looked like undead.

This makes me want to go back and do the Main Quest again; I haven't been in an Oblivion gate for a while. :)

I'd have to say that the enemies I find hardest to deal with aren't the creatures at all. It's certain classes of NPCs, who have fighting tactics that are hard to respond to. I always have trouble in Marauder dungeons, because you never know if the enemy around the next corner is an Orc with an enchanted ax or a battlemage. I find I'm always having to react to their attack, and never seem to have quite the right set of defenses ready.

Then there's the Conjurers and Necromancers, who throw a summon at you, and then run away. They're hard to hit; I always seem to be trying to run them down and corner them, all the while being beaten on the back by whatever monster they've summoned.

My new level 3 pacifist character is currently avoiding the Arena. Since I have nowhere to run and he refuses to use weapons or destruction spells, all he has to work with is a summon skeleton spell and drain health (thats the most offensive he gets) these arena combatants are just so fast! His speed is 85 and they still catch up to him! So I'm staying away from the Arena at the moment.

In a ruin last night, I got my butt kicked so bad by Dread Zombies. I thought I was pretty strong at Level 15 but it was 3 on 1 and I didn't survive the first encounter. I tried summoning the Dremora Lord but that wasn't doing it so it had to be the Storm Atronach who helped me and they were kicking his butt too! Multiple encounters...finally made it through but it was tough! Yes, there are enemies I want to avoid. :)
