Enemy Information in PvP

Post » Wed Mar 05, 2014 1:31 am

This has been a topic of hot debate on the Reddit subforum (over 500 comments) as well as Tamriel Foundry (over 800 posts). Primarily the current API giving mod-makers access to information regarding opposing player actions, buffs, and mana/stamina status in PvP.

There has been a lot of back and forth, with people on both extremes (wanting full access to everything, wanting no addons at all) and people wanting to find a middle ground. I'm curious where people here fall, in regards to what features they find acceptable for addons to be able to adjust from the standard UI. The more complex issue being, of course, that it's not as simple as a "don't like it don't use it" situation, because players who want to compete at the highest levels have always been and will always be compelled to use addons of sufficient power in their ability to make the game easier, whether they want to or not, so the simple act of making a feature available to be modded for, in a way can pigeonhole players into using it if powerful enough. Also, if there was an option to create separate PvP campaigns where UI functions were restricted, would that interest you, and if so which would you go with?

I am only for addons as long as they are not needed to stay competitve.

Cosmetic/personal preference stuff is okay. Giving a competitive advantage is not.

I played PvP with the Tactical add-on. It made me a worse player. Things happen too fast for all that info to do anything but slow me down.

If I got beat it was because I was stupid or because of a losing tactical situation (getting jumped from stealth by 3 players) or a combination of both. Same for when I got kills.

All the information in the world would not have changed a single outcome.

Third party external programs that take permitted api outputs to automate game actions are another matter.

In PVP addons should only show the debuffs you personally applied to a target.

I find it absurd to see your enemies HP, stamina and magicka numbers or which skill they are casting.

I don't mind if the combat log tells you afterwards which skill you got hit by.

I personally don't like the idea of add-ons of any kind. Level playing field for everyone - anything that gives anyone a tactical advantage (which is basically any add-on) should be banned.

We are beating a live horse until we hear decisive info on this subject. Hazy, generalized statements from Zenimax that we have heard so far aren't sufficient when we have debated this down to the issue at the core. Once again it is not about any mod it is about the access to api information about enemy players that needs clarification.

edit- another bonus to removing this info is less traffic back and forth from the server to the client which means less lag in heavy player pockets which Cyrodil mainly consists of.

I'll go ahead and throw this up here too, since you seem to be carrying on this crusade in multiple threads.

The only legitimate concern here are these third party automation programs. As you've often said, ZOS is aware of the issue. Let's try and give them some credit to make the decision over whether to attempt detection or limit the api. If they can't make that call, then it's for the best, as they wouldn't last long anyway, and it saves a lot of people from spending the monthly subs.

If however they are in fact able to handle this potential exploit, then your doomsaying is vain, and it becomes simply a matter of personal preference. Let's sit back and see where the chips fall, shall we?
