Enemy A.I.

Post » Sat Aug 15, 2009 6:52 am

While watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVOLm13VUQg&feature=player_embedded of a quite obvious horrible player playing against A.I. , it did end up looking quite fantastic how it dodged and sorta dived out of the way from enemy fire, It's also neat how it used it's 2 grenades sparingly.

How do you think the enemy A.I. will be in BRINK ? will it take cover or retreat or rush you?

just thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss.

(Halo Combat Evolved)
Innovations in Game AI
Enemies use cover very wisely, and employ suppressive fire and grenades.
The squad situation affects the individuals, so certain enemies flee when their leader dies.

A lot of attention is paid to the little details, with enemies notably throwing back grenades or team-members responding to you bothering them.

The underlying “behavior tree” technology has become very popular in the games industry (especially since Halo2).

F.E.A.R

Innovations in Game AI

The AI uses a planner to generate context-sensitive behaviors, the first time in a mainstream game. This technology used as a reference for many studios still today.

The enemies are capable of using the environment very cleverly, finding cover behind tables, tipping bookshelves, opening doors, crashing through windows…

Squad tactics are used to great effect. The enemies perform flanking maneuvers, use suppression fire, etc.

supossely its really good

there are a lot of games focusing on AI with brink no exception just like socom 4 having its AI use tactics and have captains leading its men against you like you are against a uniformed army instead of hoards of mindless enemy. Brink will have its AI also performing tasks like you will to keep the game play challenging.

From my first impressions of the game this was one of the two things that i said needed to be made damn near perfect for Brink to fly.

The AI can probably be taught to do all the things the mobs did in the numerous other FPS's and i guess thats ok but the difference is the SMART system is thrown into the mix. The AI has to be programed to use that system, and use it well. Otherwise whats the point fighting them? If I can slide into cover, vault walls to avoid fire, climb buildings to flank enemies etc. it'd be lame if the AI couldnt or didnt use any of those moves too.

If they can integrate the SMART with AI behaviour then i think this game is half the way there to being awesome.

Well then you're in luck, because the A.I. is apparently indistinguishable from human players. They tested it, and the testers actually thought that they were playing other human opponents.

the Central Command A.I. which gives you, the player, objectives, will also give the A.I. objectives to complete

As you increase the AI difficulty, the AI uses more flanking routes, so I am guessing they make groups and rush you.

With respect to the thought it was human story, I am pretty sure those were interviewers/reporters for the game, game testers would probably say, AIMBOT HAX.

its probably gonna have context sensitive behaviour, since theres an AI commander telling you what to do, makes sense the actual AI will follow the same orders. in fact i wouldn't be suprised if the AI are better team players than most players

yeah, which is probly a good thing, cuz if the AI is rly hard, then it forces you to work together or get shot up again and again

I know hopefully its as good as Killzone2 AI they were pretty crazy on Elite difficulty and would be alot of fun having that challenge while playing co-op with a bunch of buddies.

Yeah, I've heard the AI in that is really difficult to deal with but I am hoping it's the same for BRINK just so I can get better practicing against difficult AI before heading online.

why is everyone so worried about the AI in an ONLINE fps? In all my years of playing games where the main focus is online, not one of them was this focused on the AI. I can understand if the single player aspect is going to be chalenging or not, but why would that be this big of a concern? Are people that scared to play each other and have a lil compitition? I know it's normal to do in an rts,(comp stomp games) but in a fps focused for online gameplay?

perhaps there is coop against the A.I. it's nothing to do with being scared of playing one another online but why not have good A.I. to take on as well as being able to be competitive online

i'm not saying the AI shouldn't be good, I'm saying why is everyone so obsessed with the AI.. It worries me that more people seem to want to play this game more like borderlands then anything else..like an mmorpg, more worried about leveling up, character customization and abilities..next thing you know people are going to want raid bosses and epic lewts.

Because bot matches kick ass - especially when you can have your buddies fight with you vs them. It's been awhile since a triple A game came along and offered bot support. I welcome it with open arms.
Of course I will play online, but sometimes I just don't feel like dealing with people.

Who cares...they paid for the game, they can do what they want.

On that note, who else thinks Brink's style of combat would make for some awesome boss fights? You and 7 friends all teamed up against some giant killer robot monster. Ooh, or a horde of zombies! Zombie survival, Brink style would be lots of fun. No respawning, so it's up to Medics to keep people alive. Soldiers hand out precious ammo. Engineers use turrets and mines to try to defend certain areas. Operatives hack doors and command posts and stuff to activate them. All to survive for as long as you possibly can.

Err...but yeah, I'm glad that there are bots, and good bots at that, to play against. It's a special feeling, playing with your friends against the computer.

I care..because i want to figure out if a larger % of the community wants to fight bots more then actual people..and if thats the case then im worried about how well the compition online is going to be

Depends how stiff the online competition is. I would trust more bots on my team than the random drop in multiplayer.

What if a game had state of the art AI, that emulated the behavior of top FPS players. Would you consider it "competitive" playing against state of the art bots, over mediocre humans?

Humans matches can be fun, but bot matches are always 100% fun.

Only if the Bots are good. If they are as good as promised then yeah it will be fun all the time. But I seriously doubt its as good or as unpredictable as people.
