I'm in an area with a lot of laser-firing bots and turrets. Am I correct that I need to pump Energy Resistance for defense?

Because I added two points in Refractor, my Energy Resistance went from 35 to 55, but there is no difference in my survivability. I did a test: 7 shots from a turret to kill me before AND after the two Refractor points.
