Energy Weapons and DLC

Post » Wed Sep 29, 2010 9:15 pm

As all of you who use energy weapons as your weapons of choice know by now, our weapons svck. The DLC's seem to mock us. The holorifle is good, but it's just a reskinned grenade launcher. Most "new" energy weapons are just 3 rifles taped together to form an inaccurate crap gun that drains ammo like crazy, same with most of the unique weapons. The latest DLC however, was the greatest insult to us currently. While hardcoe guns and melee character's recieved a wide variety of firearms and modified impalements of death, we get a friggin' tazer. My laser pistol does more damage than that thing, you better hope you get a critical with that grey brick, you'll need the 10 seconds to spam enough shots into your enemy.

Now hopefully the next two DLC's will make up for this middle finger to energy weapons characters, as it is hinted in with the Divide in Dead Money. But what are some energy weapons you would like to see, use your imagination.

I personally would like to see a lightining gun. The tesla cannon is good and all, but this thing would shoot a constant stream of electricity instead of a bolt. It would do moderate damage over time and would drain electron charge packs. It would have to be a rifle though, to make it differant from the flamethrowers. And it wouldn't have the problem of plasma rifles either, it would not have a massive amount of tubes taking up the screen abscuring your view.

I liked the look of the Compliance Regulator, I would like to see a Laser Rifle version just because it looks so cool. The energy weapons are just to bland for my liking, a laser rifle that is black and white and rounded and that does a lot of damage and can be semi-automatic and full-auto with a gun mod. Something that looks like it could be the child of the portal gun and laser rifle.

Agreed. Old World Blues sounds promising though, and less than a month away!

Old World Blues will hopefully focus on Energy weapons, if not it will be a bit of a waste.

I'm only gonna cry if OWB is as short as this one was maybe they should strip us of our equipment so its really challenging.
tho i did use the .45 pistol for most of the game and flew through it.

I actually liked the tazer.
When I meet enemies with Follows-Chalk or that other dudette then I'm worried that Meltdown will screw them over, so tazing the enemy to make them fall down and then switching to a different weapon works great.

If by "nerfed" you mean "there's no MF cells anywhere so I had to resort to using the Shishkebab which I don't have the skillpoints for", then yes.

I don't get why anyone on a V.A.T.s playthrough would ever need to neglect either Guns or Energy Weapons - it's stupid - there's more than enough skill points to go around to have both at 90+ (w/ INT9 + educated + all skill books) by level 30 without really sacrificing anything in the end if you're careful. The key i've found is to only level up your core skills to about 80 then use all the 4 mojave wasteland skill books in everything to bring that up to about 90 in the core skills and then assuming there are 4 more skill books for each skill across the 4 dlcs then you can practically have a god character like FO3 with 90+ everything by making every skill point count by not wasting a single one and making use of the skill based perks.

If you have high repair and presumably jury rigging simply recycle and convert all energy weapon ammo to MF cells in dead money and your golden with the holorifle+. The automatic rifle+ was amazing and between both and the police pistol it was a blast.

Can't play Honest Hearts yet because I have FNV on PS3 but you can take with you all you weapons AND ammo less 75 weight but having STR8 this is not a problem for me and I don't play hardcoe with my VATS char (only my Melee char) so Ammo is weightless. If you can't find any MF cells or reloading benches, etc simply turn off hardcoe for the dlc and take as much MF cells as you please.

In terms of versatility, Guns are superior to EW (I have a character who uses both). There is really nothing EW can do that Guns can't do better. The only saving grace for EW is the Holorifle, which beats Brush Guns and AMRs. However, going through a torturous DLC to get the one weapon that makes Energy Weapons worthwhile is just plain unfair. Like Honest Hearts, OWB needs to introduce a new ammo type of EW (that can be bought from vendors in the Mojave, as well) and the weapons using this new ammo type need to be really good. I'm talking 'semi-auto, high accuracy and damage' good. As it stands, I'm thinking of just boosting Explosives when HH comes out and ditching EW altogether. Hopefully, Old World Blues can convince me otherwise.

Wait ... How is the holorifle "just a reskinned grenade launcher"

Energy vs explosives.
Single target + DoT vs AoE splash damage
Pump action vs break action
Night vision scope vs range guesser
Straight shot vs arc shot.

Yeah, not really seeing any similarities, unless you're just talking about the general shape of the weapon, in which case, every single rifle is just a reskinned *other rifle*

Fwiw, holo (with mods) is my favorite energy weapon, displacing Q-35. Sure the big unwieldy things like Tesla Cannon are fun to look at, and fire once or twice for novelty. But they'll never be good weapons for consistent use.

If anything, melee and unarmed are due for something awesome in the next DLC. In dead money, melee gets a couple knives and knives on a stick ... Thrilling. Unarmed got the bear trap fist, which was alright. It was ruined for me though, when I stepped in the 400th bear trap in DM. Seriously, hope you took light step. In HH: melee gets a warclub, which looks kinda cool, but is somewhere between a lead pipe and tire iron for damage (both weapons available within 20 min of a new game) melee gets a cool toy at the very end of the expansion, but it's just a "reskinned power glove" ;)

I really hope OWB is a jerk fest for energy weapons users and scientist types.
Some items and things I hope get to see in OWB.

More laser/plasma type weapons maybe some that look a little more put together and thought out like Star Wars laser type weapons

More crafting using the science skill

Being able to craft energy weapons using things like conductors, batteries and sensors

The ability to make more Holorifle type weapons. Maybe different Holorifles that do different things and use different mods

The ability to craft new energy weapons mods from different items

A device that lets me change my hair or face similar to the device found in Fallout 3

New energy type devices that do different things.

New implants

New power armors, Medic power armor or types of power armor that do different things

New combat armor more advanced than standard versions

New versions of recon armor

A stealth suit similar in function to the Fallout 3 Chinese stealth armor

A power helmet with cat eye or ghost vision built in

A power helmet with thermal vision would be the cats ass

A lightsaber type weapon

Did I mention a lightsaber type weapon.

I'm really intrested to see what they do in the next DLC hopefully we will see some intresting weapons as well as perks. Really enjoying the changes/perks that made automatic weapons that much more awesome.

There are plenty of MF cells to be found. In each of the 'taboo' caves with the survivalist gear. There are plenty of MF cells in each. And a bench to recycle at.

Good point. But, any energy blaster that doesnt have Vigilant Recycler had better just stay in Goodsprings!

Doesn't every EW character have Vigilant Recycler? It's free ammo.

As an EW user myself (on at least 1 character) I have little sympathy for the lack of ammo or EW in Zion. Mostly because it's expected. The unsullied nature park, inhabited by tribals and religious folk shouldn't be overflowing with energy weapons and ammo.

A place like the big empty, on the other hand ...

The Compliance Regulator could've been a good weapon. I don't think Honest Hearts is the DLC to showcase energy weapons, but we could have gotten something. Dead Money would've been a good place to have a few energy weapons, but no one weapon skill was really showcased there. It's just too bad. Guns are a strong skill, and it just keeps getting stronger. Energy weapons were mediocre, then buffed, now they're somewhat okay. I just wish the DLC fixed the holes in energy weapons rather than continuing to buff guns.

I wouldn't complain that much, I mean, since I 've got the holorifle I have been using it exclusively : between is one ammo per shot, the high damage it does and the glitch that makes it everlasting, it's the best all-around weapon.

As for the Compliance Regulator, well it's just a stun gun, at first I thought it svcked, but then, when you are surrounded by 3 white legs while playing on very hard, you discover how useful it is.

Now, on the other side, I am jealous of the new HH dlc regular weapons: 4 new weapons, good damage, very good dps, good amount of HP, fairly low AP per shot...

I wish somebody at Obsidian showed the same love for energy weapons.

Sawyer said that the weapons from Old World Blues are the most LOL of all the weapons, hopefully this will mean that we will get amazing energy weapons.

Honest Hearts focused on 1910-1940 era weaponry, because it fit thematically: John Browning was a Mormon.

I wish it had other uses besides on very hard difficulty. I have no use for it. If I'm going to sneak, I'm going to use a more powerful weapon. Its purpose just seems so narrow.

Quit whining. This was all about tribes. You got a good reason why there would be enrgy weapon tech in Zion? I'm shocked that there are even plasma mines here.

You got Old World Blues, so don't worry about it. Its nice that they came out with stuff for melee users for the prime focus.
