Engine Dumbed Down?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 11:46 pm

I had noticed few things that Oblivion featured that are now removed in regards to the Engine:

Character emotions - Didnt Oblivion featured better facial expresions? sometimes Player and NPC would show angry, scared, serious, happy and joy faces, this is not present in Skyrim, at least i havent noticed any so far in my 80+ hours of gameplay.

Trees and Bushes moving with the wind force - In Oblivion i remember Trees and bushes moving crazy when there was a storm... what happened in Skyrim? i mean they do move... but kinda barely, and havent seen Trees moving to the weather like in Oblivion.

Physics Objects - I remember in oblivion traps of all kinds, these are also present in Skyrim but not much.

Half the options for character appearance - We had twice the options in Oblivion, but yes Skyrim faces DO look much better, still having hard time making an attractive face for my Female Altmer.

Still Skyrim is the best game i played in the last 8 years, also havent had that much issues with crashes like the rest of the people are reporting, but i had liked Skyrim to use more Ram and Cores CPU for better performance.

First of all the emotions in Oblivion were disgusting, id rather have the better models over pointless and ugly animations any day.

Yes some things are dumbed down because of rushed release.

Those arent exactly Physics based Traps in Skyrim, i think Oblivion used those types more than Skyrim, you could even push logs to hit Goblins... i do have seen similar physic traps in Skyrim but they arent used that much, besides i got killed many times by just running pass some baskets in Skyrim, i think the Physics engine in Skyrim is bugged big time.

I haven't seen the pile of logs trap that used to be in OB, but I've seen a few Cart-of-Rocks traps like OB and a swinging log trap a couple times(which I think is new), all in all I think its good, I don't need one every dungeon

Skyrim has just as much physics based traps as Oblivion does, if not more.

I dont think the engine is even close to being dumbed down. At the worst, it seems the same as Oblivion. But you wont hear me agreeing to that.

Yeah... Skyrim's release was nowhere near "rushed"... They had it functioning back in June. What? do you think coders spend <1 hour a day on these projects?

Also, I kinda agree on the lack of options on the face sliders: I can't tweak the eyes, nose, or jawline anywhere near as much as I want to. But, at least it makes better faces than Oblivion's (which required an understanding of facial anatomy to get anything decent out of)

There are still facial emotions, but without the Oblivion speech minigame it doesn't appear as often. I've seen many characters get angry. You can also see your own character get really angry whenever you enter combat. The next time a creature attacks you, spin the camera around and take off your helmet - your guy should look really angry.

The moving trees were possible because Oblivion used SpeedTree. Skyrim does not appear to use SpeedTree. Without going into detail about how SpeedTree works, there is a trade off between SpeedTree and the system Skyrim uses for trees/busehs. The upside to Skyrim's system is that when you rotate the camera the trees/bushes do not rotate with you like they did in Oblivion. The downside is now they don't sway in the breeze.

I have encountered many physics traps, like boulders and various walls made of spikes. There was a trap I accidentally set off on a chest that shot spikes at me - the spikes shot at an angle that caused them to also trigger a pressure plate on the floor that triggered another trap which killed me.

I definitely noticed fewer slider bars in character creation screen. I am ok with this since I honestly felt overwhelmed by the system in Oblivion, but I can see why some people might not like it.
