I think that engineers are hard wired for defense, just think about the few objectives we do know (capping command posts, escorting, blowing up objectives, finding shortcuts, and hacking) engineers can stop most of these (disarming objective and shortcut bombs, destroying hack boxes, and laying mines for or shooting the person/robot being escorted). I know they have attacking objectives of their own (repairing things mostly) but no other class can defend like they can.

Engies are like a backbone they lay down all the heavy equipment like mines and turrets. Them and medics support the team while ops and soldier are primarily offensive.

The engineer is a great class to choose, you can play a big part of the match, defusing bombs, placing turrets, and mines too.

I prefer the Medic however

Engineers might rock, but Maintenance bots roll.
