Epic Beasts...

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:38 am

(Nerd Alert)

Ok, am I the only one that reliezed in oblivion like 80% of all the monsters are smaller than you, and the 20% that are bigger than you are like 2 feet taller at best. I loved oblivion, but one of my main things was the size barrier. No enemies were ever really like "big" they were just a ltitle larger than you. For example, a minotaur lord was not that much bigger than you, and a giant rat was that much smaller than you. Their was a very distinct size barrier that they really never broke. The only thing close was the gatekeeper in the SI, and he was even questionable.

Now to the lore.... I was wondering if their are any epic gigantic beast in the ES universe? Any giant monsters or beast exist at all? Or all the monsters in the ES universe relatively your size? I checked the bestiary for the ES on wiki and the monsters they declared "big" were like the size of a bear. I kinda want to know for reasons related for future Elder scrolls games.

Mehrunes Dagon? And dragons, although as far as I know they've never appeared in any game (barring the Avatar of Akatosh in Oblivion) but I'm not sure if they're extinct or not. And the Numidium/Anumidum (No idea why it's known as two different names, maybe someone else can clear that up) and Akulakhan, though neither of those are actually a monster.

I don't know how any less epic you can get with them.

Silt striders.
Of course, you don't fight those in any games.

All of the above were viable (didn't know about the lutemonster, was going to suggest the creatures Redorans make homes out of, but couldn't remember the names...), but I'd always thought that the animals in Oblivion specifically were scaled smaller than they needed to be. For example, the lions and bears look a lot smaller than they would in real life. It could be a game mechanics thing, and if that's the case then it's quite possible that in the ES universe, minotaurs and trolls are a lot bigger. *shrugs* But then it could not be like that.

Aside from the ones that have been mentioned, if I remember correctly, I think that the Imperfect was fairly big in Tribunal as well.

I'm guessing the reason why most enemies don't get much larger than you in Morrowind is because it doesn't seem to handle extremely large actors very well. If you made races that were too small, you could encounter all manner of weird issues with them, such as getting stuck in places, and exceptionally large monsters from mods also tended to be prone to some pretty odd behavior. I'm not sure if the same applies to Oblivion, but in either case, the Elder Scrolls series seems to be fairly lacking in especially large creatures you can fight.

And, of course, whacking away at somebody's kneecaps would look extremely ridiculous.

There was a dragon skeleton in Battlespire. Don't know how it decomposed so quickly (it was, what, a few days at most between the time it died and the time you showed up?) but some part of me likes to think the scamps ate it.

Admittedly, I thought the Xivilai, Aurorans, minotaurs, et al. were big enough to deal with. Been nice to see a cow or something though.

I agree that creatures in OB were of a pretty decent size, but I see where the OP is coming from. It would be cool to see some gigantic creature that only the most powerful warriors and mages could conquer. Just a thought.

Yeah, they still have it. Look for the "Oblivion Godzilla" thing on youtube.

There are lots of big creatures in lore, especially in and Skyrim, from what I gather. Giants, Dragons, massive snakes, enourmous whale-like creatures, etc.

The fifty foot steam centurion from Redguard was larger than normal. It was probably the easiest thing to kill in the game though.

I would LOVE to see people capturing one of those and taming it and using it as a war machine in a TES game...I could see how it'd work, the foes could be on top of it with a little wall covering the entire outside, with archers behind the walls. And in the middle, there are like 2-3 spellcasters that constantly heal the monster...It would be one hell of a challenge, you'd have to levitate above it with all those archers going after you, kill the spellcasters, then have everyone just go loose on the beast and try to bring it down.

There are a fair few mods that bring bigger creatures into the game, namely dragon. There's 2 I've used in Oblivion, one where it's a massive dungeon crawl with an enermous dragon at the nd, and enough one that adds lots of variations of dragons to the wild, though them ones are fairly small. But, that's what's the console for, eh? "Setscale".
