Although flails would be pretty awesome, I really doubt that they'll be in Skyrim.

You just want every weapon in the world, don't you? Is this because it was mentioned in your earlier thread demanding spears that Daggerfall had flails? Is that what brought this on?

Well, flails are my favorite medieval weapon. I have no doubt that they have no chance of being in Skyrim. Oh well. We don't need to add another weapon to the list of things for people to obsess over. A billion weapons does not make for a good game.

Let it go while you can.

If spears are too difficult to implement in Skyrim, you can bet your bottom septim that flails are too.

Just imagine if your skill at using the flail wasn't good enough, and you end up swinging the ball into the back of your head.

I don't see the difficulty in implementing flails if they have a good Physics engine. They're still one or two-handed weapons, and such animations would work for the haft. The only difference is the business end has a different, unique trajectory. If Warcraft III could implement flails, then there's no reason Skyrim shouldn't be able to.

On the other hand, spears require a completely different combat style to portray in a manner that suspends disbelief.

They don't even have to apply physics to the flail, just make an appropriate animation for each way you would hit a person with it.

There would be left, right, over, under, and maybe a special move. Then there's the situation of hits for each, so there would be a miss, a solid hit, a glancing hit, a block, a shield wrap (around the shield). It doesn't seem like the most daunting task to get this weapon in there.

Hopefully it will be before 11-11-11, then :P

Besides, we know Flails are possible to implement believably in 3D. Warcraft III is old

A huge selection of different types of weapons would be awesome! While I'd personally not likely use flails, I'd love to see them in the game.

This is by far the worst "They have it in Game X so it should be in Skyrim" example ever. Warcraft 3 is an RTS for Chris's sake. It doesn't have to have a good animation, all the attack's are based on dice rolls. Half the time most attacks don't look like they connect when they do. This is about collision detection, something that Warcraft only used to keep you from building in certain spots or walking through buildings and other stuff. Just wow...

I would love for flails to be in Skyrim. They would either have to have their own attack animations for the ball to keep it from hitting the wielder or just make it so it can't hurt the wielder (which could already be a factor, we have never had a weapon that could hit the person using it in one of the newer games. The only problem is with an animation it looks silly most of the time and if you make so it can't hurt the person using it it could still get wrapped around other things pretty easily and get stuck. Some things on chains glitched rather easily in Oblivion like some guard tower torches and stuff like that.

I would love them to be in, but if not even a basic weapon like a spear is in (glad they at least didn't cut swords!) then flails won't be in either... And TES VI will probably only have swords and axes...

The animations looked fine, though. All that needs to be reworked is implementation of real hitboxes accompanying the animation.

And for your second paragraph... be careful where you swing it. I think the trajectory of the ball should be physics-based. Anything in its path gets hit (Hitboxes have been around forever). I don't think it would be too hard (relatively speaking) to ensure the chain doesn't get stuck on thing.

What's with the obsession over spears? They've only ever been in two of six Elder Scrolls games (Battlespire had the Spear of Bitter Mercy for its "Wild Hunt" segement, and Morrowind had spears. ARENA, Daggerfall, Redguard!, and Oblivion all lacked spears). They aren't a "Staple of the Series that have been removed to dumb the games down.

The more deverse types of weapons the better, also roleplay wise.

You can balance everything if you want to, and adding an animation for them cannot be too hard.

Plus they fit very well into this world, and can give a character a completely different aestetic feeling to a character. And city guards without spears/ halberds just look wrong.

It doesn't matter at all how many games of the series had them, we're talking about Skyrim and the devs know many people want them, why do they ignore their fans?

With flails, there would be two options for handling the attack animations:

1. A few fixed animations. While this works for a sword or warhammer, it might look odd for a weapon that moves so much.

2. Physics based. This could be pretty cool, but might lead to alot of problems and inconsitency with the attacks. You spin around quickly, the flail goes flying, then immediately try to attack but are slowed down because the end of the flail is currently swinging like crazy.
