I generally dig Campster's videos but I find this one particularly refreshing because it's one of very, very few Quake retrospectives I've seen/read that aren't so preoccupied with the multiplayer aspect and place more emphasis on anolysing the mood and aesthetics of it instead. To this day I find Quake's atmosphere to be the thing that stands out for me these days, far more than memories of deathmatching in the computer labs at school. This video mainly posits the point that Quake's main impact is as a mood piece rather than a game where simple fun is the goal. As I go back to it I'm less and less convinced that Quake's core gameplay was really that good at all (the same goes for Unreal, another game which I utterly adore despite being able to easily acknowledge that it was deeply flawed in its core mechanics and design).

Anyway, anyone else agree?
