ESO is making Skyrim feel old for me, what about you?

Post » Wed Mar 19, 2014 9:00 pm

I didn't think it would, but it does to me.There I was last night playing Skyrim and I was thinking, It just feels a little stale and old now. Before I go any further, I'm talking about vanilla Skyrim on PS3 with DLC and not a modded version of PC, so keep that in mind.

Skyrim is prettier, no real doubts there for me, and yes there are some advantages that an non MMO game has that have been covered before here many times. Overall it's a far more polished product than the beta we are playing, and I know I can't compare a finished ESO to Skyrim as the only experience I have is beta, but Skyrim just feels old to me now.

I guess a large part of this comes down to the fact that because ESO is so fresh with new lands to explore, new faces to see and new quests to do, it's exciting, plus I really enjoyed the grouping more than I thought I would. Which brings me back to my question.

So there I was hacking up some thalmor all the while thinking, I'd love to be able to use some of the DK abilities like fiery grip to pull them in close and hack them to bits, although having said that the cut action sequences in Skyrim when you be-head someone are still fun to watch, especially when you see a thalmor head bobbing up and down in a pool of water courtesy of your sword, and when you roll your cursor over the head it asks you if you want to examine the body. What body? All I see is a head like I'm bobby for apples, the body is over there 6 feet away! hahaha happy days.

So, have you gone back to Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim only to find it a little old now?

They are different games for different things, but playing with friends is why I love MMORPGs. =)

I'm not sure I can compare the titles from a gameplay standpoint. It doesn't really feel appropriate to me.

I go back and visit previous elderscrolls titles all the time. And while they all feel dated, there are plenty of mods and graphic enhancements that keep them fresh.

I feel the same way. Though I'm enjoying the 3rd person view way more in ESO. I do and have in Skyrim toggled first person. There is a lot in the background you can see.

After the first beta I was invited to join, I went to Skyrim right away. More so I could try and figure out the route they were taking for Alchemy and see what the similarities were for enchanting.

I think you are you missing the point I was trying to make, I know you shouldn't compare an MMO to an non MMO, I get that part of it, truly I do. I'm just suprized that ESO being an MMO by comparison to skyrim with it's differences is making it feel old to me, because I didn't think it could. But it has, and I'm suprized by that.

Perhaps my question was not worded correctly, or coherent enough. I think it goes to show just how much of a good game ESO really is as it now has me really anticipating the release, buggy quests aside.

For me, ESO does not really feel like a TES, so it can't really make Skyrim etc feel old. In fact it was the opposite. It made me want to go back to Skyrim.

Tbh, I'm finding ANY game difficult to get into whilst waiting for ESO! Nothing else is doing it for me at the moment.

And although Skyrim may be a bit prettier, I actually prefer the art style of ESO. I felt Skyrim was a bit desaturated for my taste (I am on PC so used an ENB to sort that out more to my taste). I don't know where the idea came from that 'realistic=desaturated sepia tones' because it doesn't. ESO for me is a good look, not cartoony, but not washed-out looking.

This is probably gonna sound weird to a lot of you but I do not have this feeling at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I know all too well the feeling of a game feeling old, stale, and overall no fun to play anymore. I have outgrown many games that way. I even get a bit of that feeling for Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. I will get a little tired of it, go play something else for a couple months, then play a TES game for a couple months, etc. But one thing is for sure, I never fully get tired of them, and I ALWAYS crave some TES games from the past. I agree with Bleak, ESO doesn't really feel like a TES game to me at all. I do like it but it feels like someone took the races and names of the places in Tamriel and put it in a completely different game. So to me, Skyrim will be the last TES game. And I love it, and Morrowind and Oblivion very much. I've outgrown almost every other game I've played but TES will never be among those. ESO probably will, but not the others.

I'm not done with any elder scrolls. I keep coming back to them all. Have yet to start Solstheim, great houses, and more than a handful of quest lines in Morrowind; haven't done the thief/mage/fighter line in Oblivion among others I'm sure. Need to do Dark brotherhood, fighter, mage, and all of the expansions for Skyrim. Have barely scratched the surface in Daggerfall... anyhow you get the point.

That's what I get for some mild RP. Multiple characters and multiple experiences within each game. This is why TES is the superior RPG. it's a world.

This is how I feel, they're different games so they can't be made to feel old. Though my wanting to go back and play Skyrim again has to do with getting my TES fix and not ESO being a bad game or even a bad TES game, they're each unique, and I play each TES game for different reasons. Morrowind for the main quest, nostalgia, freedom, and to turn myself into a god. Oblivion for world exploration, Skyrim for graphics, combat, gameplay, the skill system, and unique quests. ESO for the online aspect, the new car smell, a much more complete and expansive world, and the PvP.

Those of you with a 360/PS3, should simply spend your time on Dark Souls 2, definitely keeps one occupied while waiting on ESO.

My opinion of course.

And I've beaten Skyrim way too many times in order for it to be any bit entertaining anymore. Even with mods, enhancements, and such, Skyrim doesn't feel that great anymore. You can only beat a game (and yes 100% quests/diff sides/etc) so many times before you lose interest. Each game has a different flavor to it. But I feel with ESO, they've done some features better than the single player games. Such as character creation (Vanilla creations, not with mods). And it's interesting to see what ESO will become capable of with them allowing the community to mod, or create add-on's. Quite a few people dislike it, that's for sure, but I for one support mods. Already quite a few mods out there that make the game more enjoyable, such as "Emote Toy", giving us the option to use Npc emotes. Showed that to my cousin using an "Enter Portal" mod, and his first thought was "Wtf?!?!'. Good stuff.

Skyrim IS old, hell I uninstalled it to make room for ESO beta. The only reason I reinstalled it is because I still goof around with it once in awhile and a new version of Requiem is coming out in a couple of weeks. Requiem basically makes Skyrim a very different game and worth playing.

I was starting to type out this ginormous list of things that really struck me how much I missed from Skyrim vs ESO when I went back to playing Skyrim last night - but it was getting infinitely longer and more snarky by the minute. Meh...

Suffice it to say I had the opposite experience - I'm pretty much only in ESO for the more back to DAoC type PvP - I fully knew how the PvE side of the game would come out back when they first talked about the development direction - the reality fits the expectation - it's World of Warcraft in an Elder Scrolls dress.

I'll likely invest several months in playing - but more looking forward to the next ES single player world experience and very different MMORPGs on the horizon.

With over 600 hrs in Skyrim then its kinda obvious that it feels old n stale.

And as someone pointed out then combat is very boring in Skyrim, and if playing vanilla then your either very weak or insanely OP god mode that 1 hits every living and dead thing.

One good thing thou is that you can rely to 100% on summons for damage or use illusions to avoid combat completely, this turned out to be my favorite build in Skyrim.

Also those 600hrs+ is without touching the main story, I dont wanna be stupid dovahkin...

I know, me too. I love CK2 and was supposed to be involved in a succession mp game but I had to pull out because I wasn't feeling the love (so to speak).

I have games I go back to time and time again and will continue to do so, just not right now!

I have some 800 Skyrim hours with 3 major chars and 5 others. My Dark Elf, Leader of the Thieves Guild, Leader of the Companions in Whiterun, Paldin of Nocturnal, Friend of Sovenguard and owner of so many houses I lost track, is becoming a bit boring.

I did dragon finishers for a while:

And that was fun but I have played Syrim right into the ground. I can still kill an hour but the thrill is gone.

Now ESO is a gas. Especially PvP.

To add further context, I too have 'finished' Skyrim in the broadest of terms, which means I've completed all the quests lines with multiple characters, and pretty much now accomplished everything I needed or wanted to do, with the last piece of the puzzle being the DLC of Solstheim and I enjoyed that immensely. I've had another crack at Oblivion but decided that while I enjoyed it, I found it flat, probably because I've done that to death too and ESO is on my radar now.

This is somewhat what I was thinking. I say somewhat because eso is a very good attempt at a tes mmo. I can't wait for early access to dive in.

At the same time, firing up skyrim after playing eso made me realize why tes can never really translate totally to an mmo format, as good as it is. I log into my skyrim character and the world never seemed more like a world than it does now. I can't put my finger on it, but it's, well, mysterious.

I'm gonna play the heck and back out of eso, but when I load skyrim I feel even more transported into a world of pure freedom. Like I said, can't quite put my finger on it.

What ESO needs is some controversy. Remember the endless Skyrim debates about who was right/wrong in the civil war?

Nope.

Currently playing Morrowind MGSO 3.0 (Which looks gorgeous by the way).

In fact I was playing it before during and after the ESO Beta and I was nearly as excited to be playing it as playing ESO.
