ESO single player style

Post » Mon Feb 10, 2014 3:53 pm

I'm a real fan of the Elder Scrolls universe, but when the developers announced, that the next ES game is going to be an mmo I was very disappointed. But I tried to be positive, and the opportunity to roam Tamriel made me happy. So this weekend I played a lot with the beta - first time. And yes, the game is beautifull. But I haven't played too many mmo so far, because I don't like them. I tried to like some mmo, but no, this isn't my style. For months I thought that the ESO can be different, but no. It has all the main elements, that makes me hate this types of games. This is a great game, but I am a roleplaying type, and the hundreds of players runing about, saving the same girl as I save, opening the same chests as I open, talking to the same person as I a talk to (sometimes a whole football team) kills the feeling. So I didn't enjoy the beta at all, but I tried. The world seems to be a real chaos, where hundreds of players are killing the monsters, animals, robbers . . . but in minutes every enemy is reborn. I really hate mmo's, I can't help.

But!!!

What if there would be a gameplay mode, where you don't need to see the armies of heroes around you. A mode, where there is only a few other players visible. You could coop with your friends or strangers, but the swarm of players wouldn't make it impossible to believe in the world.

Any chance??? Is this a bad idea??? Am I the firs to ask for this (very unlikely :) )???

In mmos this doesnt happen, but that doesnt mean that you can't just ignore everyone and be very unsociable, which is what some will probably do. But then, when it comes to pvp.. you will probably want to join in.

Concur with much of what the OP wrote. I want cooperative play in the Elder Scrolls world.

This may be as close as we'll get.

The play mode you propose can be easily achieved by waiting about 4 months before you buy the full game.

What you saw this weekend was a deliberate attempt to overload the megaserver in order to see if it can cope with launch day. Seeing hundreds of other players running around competing for kills and chests is something that always happens just after release as everybody is starting a new character so they are all in the starting zone. Just like every other MMO, once things calm down 4-6 months after release and people have spread out around the different higher level maps, the number of players you see around you at any one time will drop to a fraction of what you saw on the weekend.

Well they've said you can just play it alone if you want to... ideally that should mean using that megaserver technology to filter out everyone else. We'll see if this is actually the case or if it's just empty lip service.

This isn't the next Elder Scrolls game. Bethesda makes the single player ES games. Right now chances are good that the current project is Fallout; they might be working on ideas for the next ES game, but it will be a long time before any information is available.

Playing solo means not grouping with other players. It doesn't mean you're wandering through a world with no other players around. I got in the beta. So far I'm playing solo. I haven't grouped up with anyone. I still see other players.

You're looking at it wrong though. ESO is not the next ES game. Its a MMO adapted to the ES universe, it won't have any bearing on the single player game canon.

Yes, I would like to participate in battles and fight against other players. In large scale battles it seems to be really good. And it's good to play in a party. So the "realistic" part of the mmo is OK. But the legions of heroes on the same questlines isn't. You are right, I can try to ignore them, but it would be better to make them disappear during single player quests.

I believe you misunderstand what "playing alone" means. It means you can solo, or join with others to do quests or events. It NEVER meant that you wouldn't see others in the game itself. There was no lip service abuse here...Just misunderstanding on your part.

Yes, ESO isn't the next ES, but the opportunity to discover most of Tamriel is too appealing to neglect.

I also concur with what previous posters said. What you've seen this weekend won't be the norm. As a matter of fact in a years time, when you want to group up with other players to kill a boss in beginners zone, you'll probably have a hard time finding anyone.

I would also like to play this game as a single player experience(at least up until level 50) but chances of this feature getting implemented is pretty slim. On the other hand, adding an "Role Players shard" to the "megaserver" shouldn't be too hard. I wish zenimax would implement it...

It is possible, consider the rest as helpful other players, nothing more, since loot is not affected, then they can only help.

And if you want challenge there are always group dungeons so its a win win in the end.

(all this information is available, so stop pm'ing about breaking nda icapital, its getting annoying).

Was possible to level up that far in SWTOR, playing cooperatively with one other.

I liked you idea of turning off people on the screen, like you would turn off grass. I guess would be a bit awkard to see a mob drop dead in front of you because someone killed it but you didn't see. So to hide all elements involved in the actions of other people surely is a super technical advanced stuff. We can phase things so easily in-game so I don't see why not. But that defeats the purpose of a MMO. I'm sure Bethesda will continue the ES saga because ESO is set before Skyrim and Skyrim begs a sequel. Hopefully Fallout 4 will come first.

well to COMPLETELY remove other players from the scene... why bother playing it at all? its still an MMO lol

Just think of the rest as other adventurers.

Also if you see the dev video about gameplay you can notice that they together defeat a dark anchorage or w/e its name is, and man is that awesome, trust me, you want other players, the game will feel far more alive.

BUT what I do agree is that it will be extremely annoying at start since EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER will be "stuck" on leveling area's, meaning it will be extremely overcrowded up to the point of where maybe respawn timer on important npc's won't be enough. But that will slowly digress away as we get deeper and deeper and the players get spread out more .

Yeah I am looking for to running solo in ESO or possibly co-oping with a few friends, but other than that I plan to avoid the majority of the online aspect, especially the PvP. I don't think its a bad idea its just that I don't play Bethesda games for competition, I play it for story and adventures. I hope the next TES game will be epic...of course if they want to make Fallout 4 in the meantime, I won't object to that either :D

Yes, the mobs makes this option technically difficult I think. But I don't expect the "impossible". Maybe some months later I'll give it a try, when the starting zones aren't so crowded. (But I hope for an other solution :) )

Agreed. I do prefer instanced quests as well. DDO used a system with only this, you, your party and the quest. It gives a deeply immersion and a real videogame p&p rpg experience. :D

Without breaking the NDA, you will not be entirely dissapointed with ESO in that regard then.

Just don't expect EVERY single quest to be like that though.

Yes, this is an mmo, and I think a good one. But lot of people plays ESO because it is in the Elder Scrolls universe, and not because it is an mmo. After Skyrim they want a new adventure in this world. They like, or only tolerate the mmo games, but in the first place they play because of the world.

There will be no "single-player" on ESO, that's why it's online.
