Eternal snow?

Post » Wed Sep 02, 2009 8:41 pm

So with this setting being a cold northern land, will the ground be covered by eternal snow? Cause that would svck. I enjoy the warm summer days in the vineyards near Skingrad, and the big lush forests covered by plants and flowers. I'm really hoping this won't a constantly cold and snowy map. Maybe the four seasons will actually be visible on the weather pattern.

*Sigh* This was already covered in an exsisting thread. No Skyrim will not be all snow. As logic dictates, the higher elevated the mountains are, the more snow. It does not mean Skyrim is all snow. The Holds of Eastmarch and The Reach show signs of lush pine forests and rocky grasslands.

For the 1 billionth thread, SKYRIM IS NOT ALL SNOW! Here's a map.

Id imagine the devs will be aware that the problem of environment fatigue needs to be prevented.

When I think of Skyrim I imagine the area around Bruma. But on the other hand, speaking in geographical terms, Morrowing is on the same latitude as Skyrim and has no snow at all ;) so I guess there could still be tons of diverse landscapes.

I think the game should have seasons: winter, spring, summer and autumn. In summer, spring and autumn there would only be snow at high elevations, while in winter there would be snow pretty much everywhere.

It would be very awesome if they add seasons and it was green in the summer and snowy in the winter. Also It would be cool if it looked like cyrodil in the south and like Bruma + much more snow and mountains far north.
I am also a little concerned about all this snow! IMO It would just be very monotonous if there only were snow!

Yes! They are game developers, of a very high caliber, they know how to make a good game, and what it takes.

Bruma is high in the mountains, where there will be more snow. Not all of Skyrim will be in high elevations like that, some parts of it will be in lower elevations, where that won't be (as much) snow.

This is probably the most common misconception about Skyrim.

No. There will be lush glens and flowing rivers too, but there will probably be more snow than there was in Cyrodiil or Vardenfell.

The misconception arises from the fact that on the official Tamriel map the entire province of Skyrim is colored in white.

And from people who have only played Oblivion who assume that Skyrim is exactly like Bruma because it's the homeland of the Nords.

No map of Tamriel has Skyrim colored completely white. Even Arena's map has some http://www.imperial-library.info/content/skyrim-map-tes-arena.

If we're lucky, there are a few weeks of snow during the winter :P And I live in Sweden... Last summer, we even had temperatures of almost 40 degrees celsius one time, and 25-30 most of the summer..
So I guess Skyrim won't be all snow :D

Heck, I live in Canada, we are considered Northern. We get only a foot of snow each year where I live. Last year we got about 6 millimeters and that's it.

Speak for yourself. I recall there was snow for at least around 2 months last year where I live in Sweden.

Yeah, I wouldnt worry too much about this. There will be snow especially along the morrowind/cyrodiil border. And the especially large peaks will have it in spades. Im expecting the Throat of the World will have much significance, and a majority of the snow will be in that area. Im not sure how they'll hand such mountains being prominent rather than secondary: Oblivion style mountains just couldnt cut it if you wanted to make an open experience. The graybeard on the stele certainly suggests that part making a significant impact.

Now keep in mind, Im not sure when this takes place in the timeline exactly. But the area in the game could well spread to mainland Morrowind, considering the amount of turmoil thats happend there, both on vvardenfel and mainland since the Oblivion Crisis ended. Its certainly a very active part of the current timeline. In the end, I think it'll be a good bit of cold and ice, but not even to the same degree Solstheim was. Frankly I cant wait. I spent my life mostly living in cold, mountainous deserts, and they are absolutely stunning in beauty, and have a way of putting things into perspective. Ever seen a field of lush rolling grass accented by large gray rocks, coverd in red lichen? Its like, what more could you do, you're not gonna see anything prettier :D

Cold lands have a beauty, its more often subtle then overt, and played against the contrast of its foreboding mountain and high elevation regions. If done right, it can be the prettiest place in the world -- and Bethesda has done nothing but prove again and again how truly capable they are at land design.

It also creates a great emotional setting. The cold and the community, the burning flames of passion and hatred, the isolation and the strength all forming bonds between those who realise they MUST work together or die from the unstoppable winter. And if people have been living there for longer than central air conditioning has existed, you'll find those attitudes in amazing amounts.

Edit: Heres an image from the primary Skyrim location in Arena: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:AR-Img-Labyrinthian.jpg Even this one lacks snow :)
