Ever feel weird about starting in a high difficulty?

Post » Fri May 15, 2015 3:04 pm

I used to start in expert without much problem, now i started new char in master, (no followers or cheap tricks) is it my idea, or it just gets hard in low levels?

Like sometimes if i am not blocking, i am insta-kill camed by bandits. Well i know i can do cheap stuff to lvl all 3 crafts to make good gear from begin, but i kinda spoils the adventure when you grind so much.

Only viable class i have found in master (lvl 1) is summoner, cause you just spam atronarchs and dremora. On stealth i need more like 20 arrows to kill a bandit, on warrior i need shield heavy armor, flesh armor and IF lucky i can kill a bandit leader with 10-15 pots

What is your opinion? have you ever tried it?

Isn't that kind of the idea?

I never move the difficulty slider in any Elder Scrolls game. I think it's pointless.

No way, never! I'll never bump the game up to Master or Legendary, that's just asking for trouble.

I prefer Apprentice + dead-is-dead at lower levels on Xbox. On PC, sometimes I'll start with Adept. It's possible to have more 'cheap tricks' (as you say) on PC since mods can add followers or whatever. In some cases on PC, I'll bump difficulty up again to Expert if my character is in an area which the gameworld has deemed lower-level (such as the Whiterun / Falkreath area). This way if my character goes through (let's say) Silent Moons Camp or Halted Stream at Level 30, there is some sort of challenge, at least.

Have a trawl around the threads you'll find there's a small bunch of us who play exclusively Legendary from the get go and some of us are mad enough to go Dead is Dead with that. ;)

Many combinations of builds are viable for high difficulty starts. You have to play to their strengths, which means as much, Your strengths. Some of us can cope with mage builds at high levels ( I can't, or maybe I'm not practiced enough in that discipline) others of us go for nimble light armour with ranged attacks and a few slog it out in heavy gear and 2H weapons.

But as you will know the game gets harder as you gain levels, so don't expect to cope by staying at low levels of poor or no improved armour and weapons. You do need to grind it up a bit, but looking forward to the next increases in weapon power and armour rating is part of the fun in progressing. Otherwise just don't bother taking the level ups and do the whole game at level 1, but then you'll never find the best gear or most interesting enemies.

Bottom line....yes playing a higher level from the start is more than feasible, lots of us do it :)

My first time playing skyrim I put it on master right out of the gate and never touched the difficulty option again.

Dang, well that's insane! I prefer Apprentice or Adept + DiD. This way there's still a reasonable threat to consider at all times, but my character actually has some sort of chance to survive.

Hats off to you, Rick.

I play exclusively on Legendary since it became available, and my advice would be to use followers up to level 20 at least. It's possible to make do without them, but it'll be much harder and much more tedious.

Almost the same for me. I always play on adept difficulty because I like it to be relaxing. Never played on higher difficulties.

But yes, until Lv 10-15 it's harder than later.

I've lately been switching back and forth. I have a character I'm pushing through the MQ at Legendary-DiD, just as a personal challenge. I may not go far, though (we're at level 5, in Riverwood now), because I find combat tedious and boring when it goes on too long.

It stops being about fighting at some point, and starts being a process of chugging potions and whittling down the opponent's "red." Awfully "gamey" for my taste. It's a struggle for me to see a Legendary character as an actual character, since everybody else in the game world (even some old shopkeeper lady) is stronger and healthier than my character.

I remember once, when trying Oblivion at highest difficulty, being attacked by a highwayman with an axe that my heavily armored character simply couldn't defeat. I ran to the nearest town, and the stable owner came to my rescue, and beat down the highwayman with her fists. Totally silly. :)

I bumped things up to Master a while ago and never looked back. The game is way more tactical and I don't use any cheap tricks (no exploits, no chugging potions, no buying enchanted gear from vendors etc.).

However, I'm more than willing to attack and run away, come back later, and finish the job. I'm very dependent on sneak attacks and archery and both illusion and conjuration magic are real assets. My builds don't wear armor (too heavy, inhibits sneaking) because direct melee at low levels on Master is not a good idea.

I'm also happy to just wander around instead of doing specific quest-lines. This way, I can pick specific camps/forts/dungeons instead of being pushed into them by some group or quest.
