Is everyone with Win7 64-bit having problems?

Post » Thu Nov 25, 2010 5:49 am

Guess I'm another user with the CTD after initial movie when starting a new game. Same FalloutNV stopped working issue as so many others.
And as so many others I've tried all the going solutions with no joy.

Win 7, 64bit Home Premium
Asus 480 GTX
Quad Core 2 Extreme Q6850 @ 3.67 GHz
8 Gig G.Skill Ram

I am no computer genius but I would consider that I am a competent user and enthusiast with 17 years experience (one of those slightly older gamers). I don't have the best system but more than enough for the latest games, and this brings me to my point. It may be the wrong thread but never the less Fallout NV is the latest of a recent bunch of titles which have not been tested anywhere close to an acceptable standard. It strikes me that the gaming engine has not been significantly improved or developed from Fallout 3 and this is disapointing for two reasons.

Firstly how can a title using an engine first used over 2 years ago, designed for use with DX9, be so riddled with problems as to not even load for many users with quite a mainstream computer setup.

Secondly what is the point of investing in the latest graphics cards and operating systems, at a substantial cost, if the games developers are not going to take advantage of the advances, like DX11, and processing grunt available to most users.

It is a sad state of affairs but it seems that whilst games are developed on powerful PC's the intended market is consoles. This then explains the lack of interest in maximising the PC experience for the hardware available and also why the testing is so much like an after thought!

I worry that PC gaming is under threat due to a lack of developer investment, expensive hardware, pirating and the ever contrived security implementations.

I have become bored of the endless online shooters, or grinding away on some naff skill tree in a MMO Role Play life waster. And I don't belive that indie games will ever be the saviour of the PC. Thats why I was so eagerly awaiting this title as an involving single play experience as I found Fallout 3 so rewarding and just a bit different. So what are we to do to save PC gaming (which is by far the best way to play), if we can't even play a game developed for an out dated console?

Looks like you've got an Aspire 7741, mine's a 5740, but I don't know why the model would make a difference. I just installed mine and let Steam update it, and it's worked fine since (except for one CTD and one freeze, but I've been playing for like 10 hours now)

Yea same - aspire 7741g - it now crashes on cinematic start and also im unsure if steam has updated it? also when the game goes to the title screen it does flash up with something about download for a split second and disappears. So if we have the same then something on mine cant be right.

here's my graphics card

After the dll fix and ini mod I'm having no problems. I do find I have to make sure I don't run my gtx 285 overclocked and my crashing to desktop has disappeared. This game as well as Fallout 3 hates my graphics card being overclocked. :nono::blink:

I cant even get through a couple hours in the game now. I dont know if it is something that happened after an update or not, I cant tell what updates steam has downloaded. I diddnt have this problem untill last night. Now everytime I close the game it stops responding. Not that big of a deal but since that started happening im getting huge fps drops ALWAYS. It takes me 10 mins to walk 5 feet. What would cause this. Other games run fine, i can still run FO3 just fine. Ive been using the .dll fix and it has made it better (along with "toggleemotions") for the most part untill last night. I took the .dll out to see if it helped but no change whatsoever. I am tempted to format and reinstall, I just dont want to have the same problems.

I might have found a fix for my problem... at least, the game loads and I get to see that doc guy now :

For people using an ASUS motherboard and/or ASUS video card, try to uninstall the Gamer OSD software (it's a video capture software for saving IG movies and/or broadcasting). I removed it, restarted my PC and launched Fallout New Vegas and everything went smoothly. Also, try starting the game without xfire, if you're using it.

Don't know how many this will help and if I'm just having luck being able to run Fallout today, but it works.

i have a phenom 2 x6, gts 250, 4g of ram, win 7 64bit, and it gets hell slow while around npc′s, even with lowest settings

but i had an extra hard drive that i wasnt using, so i installed it on the computer and tried installing windows xp sp3 32bit to see if it works well there...

and it does, runs perfeclty there, im playing it there now, but is just plain stupid to have an extra os for a single game, dammit

Running Fallout: New Vegas on Windows Ultimate 64-bit with following set-up:
ATI Radeon HD5850 1GB DDR5
Intel i5 2.6 GHz OC to 3.4 GHz
4GB DDR2 Ram

I have experienced absolutely no problems after about 14 hours of play. However, I changed the games priority to high under processes before my first game, don't know if that made a difference.

I'm running fallout new vegas on windows 7 64 bit and it will crash at least every 30 minutes and I have to restart the game. For some reason, I only get 60 fps on this game maxed out.

Core i7 OC'd to 3.8 ghz
Palit GTX 470
4GB DDR3 1600 RAM

They definetly need to fix the problem. It makes me want to play Fallout 3 just because it never crashed on me anywhere near as much as New Vegas does.

It's a fun game. I just wish it didn't have so many bugs and it uses the same engine as Fallout 3 but somehow it got even worse with bugs then Fallout 3.

I just wanted to let everyone know I got FO3NV to work by creating an XP Pro dual boot. It still crashes from time to time and most of the time I'll have to reboot the machine when the errors start. The crashes I get are poof, back to the desktop. Considering I never could get this game to work on the 2 machines I have, this game has serious issues. This is the 1st time I've had to use a dual boot config to play a game and I own at least 75 games, and playing about 8 of them now. Not even Age of Conan was ever this bad. At least the patch got the save issue resolved. I think the other issues will never be resolved because they occur in FO3.

45% of steam users have a 64 bit OS and of course no attempt was made to add support to this console port.

Win 7 x64, Intel rig with 5770 and thus far zero issues, not even a crash (knock on wood). I've only got 22 hours in according to Steam so maybe something will show up later.

No probs here as such. Win 7 X64, Q9550 CPU, 480GTX and 6Gb Ram.
Only anomaly is little light flashes here and there when outside. Maybe a driver problem.

Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
4GB DDR2 1066MHz
ATI HD4850

Speech audio is completely FUBAR - had a few bits in the intro, now nothing but subtitles. Have updated graphics and audio drivers to the latest with no success.

Slow down when multiple NPCs on screen in close proximity, but runs smoothly when in wide open large areas.

Crashes - far, far too many - 20+ in 10 hours. A lot of these have been around Inventory - either accessing, repairing, equipping, trading. If I avoid accessing the Pip boy it is less prone to crashing, though there is only so long you can ignore it.

I have a similar setup, and seem to be one of the few posting on here not having any major game breaking problems. At launch, i was having the same issues with cloud saves and auto saves, but the patch fixed those. I have the occasional frame rate drop, but nothing to make the game unplayable. As for total crashes, i have my first, approx 9hours into the game now, and for no reason it just froze up on me, and i had to restart my computer completely. Really lovin the game, and while i agree that the recent trend has been to release a buggy game and patch it later, and this is a horrible, scuzzy thing for developers to do, essentially making us the QA testers, i don't necessarily agree that this is a huge majority of people having game ending/breaking problems. I'm sure its well about what it should be for a new game of this expected quality, but to say the majority of people are having horrible problems is unfounded. This is a forum for issues, so of course the vast majority of people will be posting as such.

I have two Win7 x64 setups (one desktop and one laptop), with very different results when I try to play New Vegas:

Setup #1 - desktop
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650
4GB DDR2
ATI HD4890
Win7 x64
Probably lots of codecs installed.
The above runs the game fine!

Setup #2 - laptop
Intel Core i5
4GB DDR3
Switchable graphics cards: ATI HD5730, Intel HD
Win7 x64
No special codecs installed. Tried disabling the rest as well.
CANNOT get past the intro movie. Tried all solutions I've seen around here. Simply cannot get past the intro movie. CTD every time.

So, at least to me, doesn't seem to be a Win7 x64 problem

Win7 64bit, 4GB RAM with Radeon 3850 w/ 512MB. Some slowdown around multiple NPCs (3 or more typically)

I mean come on, I didn't have this problem with Fallout 3! What is going on over there? :(

The community of Win7 64 bit users demand a fix for this, this is unacceptable!

Gonna try the in-game Steam Community unchecked.

Figure I may as well chime in:

Win7 x64 Professional
Intel Core i5
8 gigs RAM
NVidia GTX 285M

With the above, I've only had occasional NPC lag issues. Otherwise I'm flying. I did take the time to defrag everything after the first occurence of the NPC lag, and that helped me out... YMMV.

may aswell add mine

toshiba l650 laptop
windows home premium 64bit
core i3
mobility radeon 5650 - 10.8 drivers
x-fi go usb sound card.

works pretty much perfectly. game has only crashed once in 23 hours of play.
game runs maxed @ 1366x768 very well (avg. 30fps) considering its a mobility chipset.

If you guys haven't tried changing your resolution, music and graphic settings yet, try it.

I was experiencing constant crashes every few minutes or so, so I manually changed the settings from ultra high to just high. I put AA and anisotropic filtering both on 2 samples, and changed the resolution to something other than those letterbox resolutions (I have it on 1680-1050 atm). I don't even know what the **** those letterbox resolutions are supposed to be, but they screw things up in my game. My vision would suddenly stretch out and pop back to normal, and that machine you use in the beginning of the game where you put points in your strength and agility 'n such, I had to click somewhere below the buttons to get them to work. Changing the res to non-letterbox fixed it. In advanced I put water mulisampling from high to low and I completely turned down the background music (not radio).
For some reason the game thinks I have Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS (I have ATI) but it doesn't seem to have any bad effects on the game.

I haven't experienced a single crash after I did this, and I also do not suffer from any lag when there are lots of NPCs around. It runs... well, smoothly now, constantly. Not sure what will happen after that Come Fly With Me quest, but I'll deal with that when I get there.

It may not work for everyone but it might be worth a try.

I've got Win7 64-bit, XFX 8800 GTS XXX 640MB, AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, 4GB DDR2-800. The game runs fine except for a slowdown by NPCs when looking at several of them (the strip runs pretty badly), and I just noticed that it freezes for like half a second every single time I look towards at an NPC when it fires an energy weapon (noticed this at the brotherhood firing range). I have yet to fiddle with the graphics settings, maybe there's something that at least fixes the energy weapon stuff. Oh yeah and updating to the latest drivers seemed to fix some stuttering when I first started playing, so it's worth a try if you haven't tried it already.

Same thing here, even though I have a GTX 295. The weird of it is that when the game saw (prior 2nd patch?) the card I have it ran choppy. Other than a VATS malfunction, screen turned a solid grey with the targeting boxes along the top and zero's in them, I haven't experienced any crashes yet.

That is what the dll does to trick the system. Just ignore it and set it up as you like.
