Edit: I'm not advocating omitting bisixuality, I just think that slapping it on every romance option is lazy.
Does anyone know if the 1 follower limit counts the dog as a companion?
I'd REALLY hate it if you have to choose between having dogmeat with you or a humanoid.
In Fallout 3/nv the dog didn't count against the follower limit so I am hoping the same goes for fallout 4.
Maybe even the robot as well So you can have like 1 non-humanoid (IE the dog or robot) and then a humanoid.
It's best not to view bisixuality in games as an orientation,
it's much more practical to view it as simply a mechanic to allow romance with any chosen human companion.
Even though 'player-sixual' romances are no longer considered the most sophisticated way to address complex romances (such as BioWare would do)
it's hardly lazy, just a way to achieve the end of allowing player choice, else there are debates of 'why can't I romance 'x'?'
Some individuals who declaim this mechanic as 'the game is full of bisixuals' are misreading what is essentially a 'play toggle'
and are making more of a statement about their own hatred or agenda than they are about the game.
I guess this conversation is also rather limited by knowing so little about the companions (which is fine).
Why is it that when humanoids become 'enlarged' they still seem to fit the same sized pants?
I think the incredible Hulk had the same problem...
Sadly, I'm pretty sure we don't absolutely know. If Dogmeat is powerful and resilient enough as a melee fighter, then he (she?) might be as effective in combat as a human melee companion, which would make it a bit unbalanced if you could also have him along. What I mean is, if the game is balanced to give a satisfactory challenge with a human + Dogmeat, then it could be frustrating for any players who forgo either Dogmeat or a human companion for roleplay reasons. The Lone Wanderer(?) perk gives a boost to compensate for not having any companions, but it might be overpowered if it compensates for not having two companions.
So it'd make for much more straightforward balancing if there was a strict '1 companion' rule. Unless, of course, Dogmeat and Codsworth are pretty poor at combat, and are just little extras that don't give much advantage if you have them.
This is especially problematic when the writing of characters can be very varied (depending on which writer does their backstory and dialogue), and yet there aren't enough to provide a really wide range of choice. For instance, if the only sort of fictional romance you're interested in is a humorous one (because, lets face it, in-game romances are daft enough that you might as well admit it ), and there's only one humorously written romance option... well, players might be, not exactly annoyed, but disappointed, if that one character is only available if they play a specific character.
Wouldn't it be nice if an NPC being romanced acted flirtatiously, and we had an option to say "Not tonight dear, I've got a headache."
Exceedingly stretchy lycra is super popular in fantasy-land. Of course, it has its limits. That's why the Hulk (and super mutants) are so angry. They're just under so much pressure
In perusing the perk tree, I noticed there's a perk for Lone Wanderer. Hell yes! Finally! The game is going to recognize not everyone wants a barking or talking burden with them, having to cover them because they can't take care of themselves. Maybe this will change for FO4, but I'm not biting until I see it proven.
Solo, because I can take care of myself.
I always preferred the "player-sixual" option, it gives everyone the option to romance who they want without being limited, or stuck with annoying characters. *cough*Zevran,Dorian*cough*
Although out of all the Bioware games Sky from Jade Empire, and honestly all that game had very well written romances. The Kaiden male romance was surprisingly the most nice out of all of them, especially that talk you have when you establish the relationship.
None of us have seen how the romances work in this game, I like the fact that there's more of a human element to the game, but I'm not sure how well they will be written. Guess I'm neutral about it. I'll try the romances and see if they are worth pursuing in future characters.
Just tell him that you have a headache works everytime.
Player sixual works and as others have said if you don't like gay relationships in your game then just don't hit on a guy. The downside is the depth of the NPC's background can be limited. Veronica's background was sort of defined by her sixuality. It just wouldn't have worked if she was bi or straight. Hopefully we can still get NPC's with backgrounds at least as deep as hers.
Things I would like to see ... though I doubt it will all be there:
Player sixual, but make sure the PC begins the romance. The NPC's might drop a hint, but there should be a friendly option to drop it (I'm looking at you DA2). For example if a guy NPC's asks me if I'm cold he can join me in the bedroll, I should have the option to say "have you seen Piper's ass? Man she's hot".
Give the NPC's some opportunities to advance the relationship. Showing some care or affection coming the other way can go a long way to making a good NPC romance. And not just "Hey I've been thinking of you. Here a bottle of water". More like "Hey you've been looking kind of down. Been thinking about your prior life? Feel free to talk to me if you want. I'm here for you."
Not required to take them everywhere. Feel free to leave them at home, or better yet have not every NPC you can romance a traveling companion. I might want to get to know that young lady selling mole bits on the street corner.
Some jealousy, based on the NPC (as some might not care). Some NPC's may be ok with a more open relations while others defend it vigorously.
I trust that perhaps the wedding ring (wr) will function as some sort of toggle. Wr on = no thanks; Wr off = yes please.
If they decide to not use a toggle, I suspect they'll do something like Dragon Age, where certain dialogue options can lead to a full blown romance arc. Going down that route, they'd need to reinforce the fact that if your player blows off the companion ("sorry I'm just not interested in you after all"), future romance attempts would cease with that individual.
It would be contrived as [censored] if you could return to that NPC and go, "hey, I changed my mind."
Why? That's how I got out of my last two marriages.
I planned on buying FO4 but wasn't too hyped up about the game. The news that our companions will have more depth to them definately increases my excitement as I felt lonely in the past two games. Here's to hoping that this game puts some of my other worries about it to rest (namely how ugly FO3 was).
new vegas was much better by my scale than 3 in this regard.
The companions at least had pasts and their own questlines that showed you a little bit about them. You got to help them grow a bit and decide their path forward.
It was rather paltry though and bare bones in nature. Still a couple were compelling. Veronica and Boone were actually pretty well fleshed out in my opinion. Others were disappointing IMO.
Here's to hoping we get something even better than new vegas.
Need a bro-mance companion in the vein of Garrus please. Thanks.
Need a romance option like Lady Cassandra or Alex from HL please.
Need ability to have beer with said persons, please.
Meh... Only 'romance' I'll consider is the wife "Nora" if she somehow manages to survive the prologue.
That's what I was thinking too, but then again there isn't much info about the other companions so that could change.
Yeah, I dont see my guy banging random wasteland peeps with his wife just dead.
I'm curious to see how it works but I don't really hold out much hope. Game relationships have always been extremely cheesy and in most cases.. annoyingly hard to avoid. I'm of course looking at Mass Effect and Dragon Age but Baldur's gate had the same thing going on. One wrong line and whoops, you've started a romance thread that you now have to carefully try to avoid if you dont' actually want to be in one. What I don't like about them most of all is that they often start with the innocent flirt lines. Innocent flirt lines are usually rather humorous and so I want to say them.. but you don't have the option to just be flirty with no romantic intent. So yeah.. not really looking forward to having to totally avoid conversation topics out of fear of accidental romance.
Nice. I would love to see companion quests and such. Hope there are banters and the ability to talk with them as well.
I'd like a Sera type character as a friend for my protagonist. She will probably need someone that can lighten her up sometimes. Garrus and Varric were okay but I never really loved them as much as other people. Guess I'm just not into the bro type relationships.
Awww, what a keeper!
But it is more fun to see "Nora's" reaction when your character shows up with someone like Fawkes, Lily, Raul, Charon, or ED-E as your character's romantic interest. Or worse, if Codsworth is your character's romantic interest. After all, love isn't restricted by gender or race.
Alyx Vance from HL2. By far my favorite companion of all time. And no romance at all (dang-it). And now I'm wondering again whatever happened to HL3?
Alyx was just deep on so many levels. I can't imagine her being duplicated multiple times for several different NPC's in one game. Course Alyx would be totally freaked out of Gordon actually spoke.
Hopefully the wedding ring can be kept worn to ensure romances won't happen, but won't disable banter-style flirty lines, just the more serious romance stuff. That would certainly be a good way of pleasing the maximum number of players.
In the world of Fallout 4, love is most certainly restricted by race . Not that anyone disapproves of it; after all, you can't disapprove of something that the universe makes impossible . But, yeah, confirmed by Bethesda, only human companions will be romanceable.
Never will my sole survivor tenderly polish Codsworth's chassis to its original shining chrome, never hammer out a dent from a glancing bullet while lustfully admiring his exposed cooling system pump - thank heavens!
Looks like the companions are going to be a lot more interesting this time around.
I think Bethesda has looked at some of the great companion mods out there like Willow for FONV or Vilja for Skyrim and seriously stepped it up.
Just look at the point and click interface that was demoed for Dogmeat.
Means they have spent some time making using the companion a lot less immersion breaking.
Beside Bethesda knows that with mods it won't be long before Codsworth will be saying "Assume the position" for those players that truly appreciate his shining chrome, powerful chassis and multi functional attachments.
Hopefully there will be one that lets you have more companion, but it may take some fine tuning on the game balance. Perhaps a mod to let you have Dogmeat, but he stays close and doesn't interview unless it gets to hand to hand. Perhaps Bethesda will even provide as an add on feature or in some DLC.
Little disappointed that we can only have one companion, but you got to walk before you can run.
I'm hoping in Elder Scrolls 6 or Fallout 5, we will have larger parties and more of the Bioware banter and bickering.
Maybe they can bring a pinch hitter in from Bioware for the companions side of things like they did for the FPS side of the game.
Five weeks to go.
I hope they dont follow Willow too closely. I dont know what it was, but everything of the quest felt kinda creepy in terms of "do this and we can [censored]". Almost like a grocery list of things to do to get into the pants.
And dont get me started on the six scene. You can say games cant do six scenes right but this was on a whole other level of out of place.
